Cheers Neil, was thinking I might put together a montage every time I reach a landmark number - it'll be 100 this monday... David Frankum also gave me the idea of exhibiting the whole lot, which I really like. I've never had an exhibition. Putting the feelers out to a few places in Liverpool.

Yep to both of those. I'd defo love to see them in the fresh, so to speak

Well it slipped through my fingers a wee while ago, as I suspected it would all along, not even sure if my bid would have met the reserve. Whoever got it got a beaut, there's a real Kirby vibe to the piece. Hope you got the sort of price you were after Buddy.

Dante me me cry, seriously I was in buckets!

Me too.

That's where it really let itself down for me though, as I should have had the same reaction, I really should and I completely see why people did. Alas I was pulled out of the moment and the story, as I was left thinking 'Hold on, he just had a hand through his upper body,
like all the way through, how the hoopin' heck did he cope with that and just carry on!???!
"

We'll abandon the works of James Joyce and Picasso then, and concentrate just on pornography and punk rock music instead?

No, no lets talk about the banality of Eurovision or the cliche of kids tv instead... oh hold on...

(Sorry to everyone 'cos I normally try to avoid this sort of bickering as it achieves nowt, but just can't help myself here. )

Defo be up for that. I can't think of a thrill that would deserve it more. Radiator's idea of the two covers is a great one too. Another way for Tharg to get me to get two covers.

Arh dagnabbit. After enjoying Dante so much so far, it really has been brilliant, the end of this story left me a bit annoyed though. It was fun stuff but for the life of me I'm not sure quite how Dante coped so well with what happened. Still more to come so really shouldn't complain and Burn back next week so that's great news.

Aside from that Dredd continues as it has for must this story. Age of the Wolf continues, loved this story for Grey Area and I'm really warming to the series.

The What If? was a very bold interesting choice. A slice of life really which was a really nice way to take the story. Didn't make for the most compelling read but I'm kinda glad they did this.

Of most import though FLESH BACK NEXT WEEK - WAYHEY!!!!!

Just click on this link to see/hear the finest novel ever written:

http://finwake.com/

I'm not sure that directing me to an online copy of the book answers my question, but hey ho this is beginning to feel like I'm baiting you, which isn't my intent, so best to move on. I'll try to sum up what I've intended to say as best I can and leave at that.

I don't believe that there is an ultimate form of any medium or art form. Any attempts to find one are futile and I've tried to explain why I think that, using the specific of novels, as I've done a study of the value of reading, which touched on this, in my time. The quality of Jame Joyce's Finnegan's Wake is academic (and I've made no reference to either way) to the arguments I've made, even if I think its the greatest book written that won't make it the greatest, or ultimate example of the form in anyway other than my personal opinion.

Irony aside, I gave an honest answer to an honest question. I didn't get the same courtesy from yourself when I asked the genuine question too.

It was James Joyce himself who stated that about his own work Finnegan's Wake. He said he was looking for an "ideal reader suffering from an ideal insomnia"...

...Can I just ask as its not clear from your post what specifically James Joyce said about his own work in the context of the conversation here?

If you require elaboration though (on my answer of "No") I'll play. 50 languages in a novel is a quantitative criteria, mastery of language is qualitative criteria based on how that language is used.

So writing a novel in fifty or so languages is not an indication of mastery of language?

No.

The novel has no beginning or end but is circular a constant rebirth. There aren't any other novels like it.

"Well, you know or don't you kennet or haven't I told you every telling has a taling and that's the he or she of it"

None of which is even close to being relevant to anything being judged ultimate, even by your spurious standards of number of languages.

General / Re: Why 5 stories?

Around Cursed Earth from a very quick look it drops to 5. Around this time its 5 stories backed up with 2 one pages stories. Though having said that when Starlord merged it seems to go to 4 stories, so my idea of consistency has gone to pot! Around 105 it seems to settle down to 5 stories (short 1 pages ones aside).

As ever thanks to Barney, mind I've done nothing like an exhaustive search

Story length and thrill count have fluctuated over the years haven't they ? It's only since Matt started it's been consistent like it is now.

I stand to be corrected, but I think its been pretty much 5 since the start, maybe the first 100 or so issues this was less defined, but since then 5 has been standard hasn't it? I guess exceptions being when they was a one page story included to move that to six and the occasional double length or even complete Prog thrill, but generally 5 thrills has been standard?

Now if Top Shelf would only pull the finger out and give it the compendium treatment it deserves...

Oh yeah, as I've said else where it'd made my year if that finally comes out, been waiting for it long enough!
