Setting aside a whole range of cheap cracks* I am impressed by the postage: US $44.70. What are they going to do? Use the money to build a matter transportation device with the money specifically so they can deliver it straight to my coffee table? Although I see they are located in San Dimas, CA so perhaps that is what they are doing.

* Like "I'd buy that for a dollar" **

** Although "cheap cracks" night count as one too.

Not really RIP thread as it's very not right, so new thread about people you thought about.

Brilliant minds and all, but I say the sad news about Bob Hoskins and was just thinking of starting an appreciation thread, so we can nice things about people before they die.

For speed you'd struggle to do better much than Virgin (especially when you factor in the wild over-estimates some of the other providers), as they run a cable into your home. BT is rolling out fibre optic cables too but, even if they upgrade in your area, it is still copper wires to your house for now.

I've been with Virgin since they were Telewest and have rarely had problems, which were quickly sorted out.

Yeah, I had an interesting experience regarding a strip due to be in ACES WEEKLY. I explained it here: http://gdwessel.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/these-and-thats/

Basically: similar title issue.

I saw that during my research (helped me find the artist, after being lead astray by a Bleeding Cool typo), seems everything has been resolved satisfactorily, although it'll be interesting to compare the two.

QuoteAlthough those 3 pages are, apparently landscape, so that really counts as 6 conventional ones (I assume, as it is all digital, that the pages will all be landscape):

If they're going the DC model of digital comics then the landscape pages will actually be half size US comic sizes, so 3 landscape pages is equivalent to one and a half conventional pages.

Emperor is only assuming the landscape format will be used

No I'm not:

QuoteAces Weekly will be released as seven weekly issues which form a volume. Each issue will have at least three landscape pages from six contributors (18 pages per issue)

Matt is colouring David Hitchcock's Paradise Mechanism and has posted a couple of pages which make full use of being in landscape:

http://mygrimmbrother.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Paradise%20Mechanism

I suppose my point is that 3 pages for each story doesn't seem a lot for each instalment but they are fitting a lot in on those pages if those examples are anything to go buy - 6 or 7 panels to a page but some large ones there.

Film & TV / Re: Nazis at the centre of the earth

It was on TV a few weeks ago, previous discussion here:

http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,31824.msg692958.html#msg692958

My thoughts:

Nazi's at the Centre of the Earth.

Yes it's Sci Fy Channel brain chowder again. Undead Nazi's in the Antartic! Yes everyone, beneath the Planet of the Apes lies a Hollow sphere world ruled by the master Race who preserve themselves by flaying unfortunate visitors of their flesh queue gory face scalping.

But these interlopers are American dammit. So though they are Scientist, abused and sexually molested by mouldy Uber mensch they rebel against the nasty Deathless ones who are led unbelievably by an Actor who appeared in the Katy Perry video 'Hot and Cold' as the Priest/Vicar. Jake Bushey [named ReichStag here: yes subtlety is not this films strong point] was another American who turned Nazi then back again to good old Uncle Sam
blowing up the Nazi super saucer in heroic self sacrifice.
'Why did he do this you cry?! ' unable to control your feverish excitement for this bilge water Tv trash?

To destroy
ADOLPH HILTER
no less reborn and badly computer animated as a giant cyborg intent on leading the world back into his beneficent clutches!!

It doesn't get bigger than that and this Film helped me regain my faith in nothingness.

The Jake Busey character made me laugh every time he appeared on the screen - those teeth!! that hair!! he's a scientist??? His name is Reichstag??

The film was awful, obviously, but a notch or two better than the usual Asylum/Syfy films but what amazes me is that they don't have someone with half a brain go over the script and tighten it up. They went to the bother of hiring actors, throwing a lot of CGI at it and it was both an interesting concept and a rather outrageous implementation but it often felt slack where a bit of extra tinkering would have done he world of good.

The Dread Central review I linked to earlier:

QuoteMuch of the movie early on is quite mean-spirited and fairly brutal; at the same time it really is hard to take any of it seriously because the premise is so out there to begin with and some of the plot twists are nothing short of hysterical. You got hollow earth, Nazi zombies, mad scientist experiments, people getting skinned alive, Nazi zombie gang bangs, flesh-eating bacteria, disintegration ray gun shootouts, a gigantic freedom-crushing Nazi UFO, and that special something I dare not spoil other than to say I began choking on a potato chip I was munching on from laughing so hard.

You also got chintzy blue screen effects work, some less than convincing CG work, and moments of incredibly clunky dialogue. The motivations of Busey's character seemed to switch on a dime, sometimes within the same scene. It's the sort of movie where two characters kiss during the finale, and until that moment we had no real inkling that the two were romantically involved.

But you know what? Dark and brooding one minute, laugh out loud ludicrous the next, pacing that goes from methodical to madcap in the blink of an eye, blood, boobs, and even a biomechanical beast, such are the makings of your quintessential Joe Bob Briggs worthy drive-in movie. On that dark and violent and nuttier than a fruitcake level, it certainly entertains. It doesn't always work, but somehow it works. You know what I'm saying? If you do, this movie is for you.

http://www.dreadcentral.com/reviews/nazis-center-earth-2012

Worth watching if you catch it on TV but I'd not buy the DVD (and I have a zombie Nazi/Nazi zombie* section in my DVDs), unless it was really cheap...

* I'm also not convinced there are any zombie Nazis in this.

Books & Comics / Aces Weekly from David Lloyd
06 August, 2012, 03:56:23 AM
David Lloyd is publishing (and Bambos Georgiou is editing) a weekly digital comic coming out... soon. It'll be 6 3-page stories and other arty goodness from an awful lot of talented folks:

Quote"Creators contributing are David Lloyd, Kyle Baker, Mark Wheatley, JC Vaughn, John McCrea, Phil Hester, David Hitchcock, Steve Bissette, Dan Christensen, Yishan Li, Algesiras, Alain Mauricet, Alexandre Tefenkgi, Billy Tucci, Mindy McPeak, Kathryn Layno, Kev Hopgood, Ferg Handley, Lew Stringer, David Leach, Carl Critchlow, Colleen Doran, Shaky Kane, Dave Hine, Hunt Emerson, Dylan Teague, Marc Hempel, Paul Maybury, Phil Elliott, Esteban Hernandez, Mychailo Kazybrid, Ben Dickson, Gavin Mitchell, Henry Flint and (believe it or not) many more...

Although those 3 pages are, apparently landscape, so that really counts as 6 conventional ones (I assume, as it is all digital, that the pages will all be landscape):

QuoteAces Weekly will be released as seven weekly issues which form a volume. Each issue will have at least three landscape pages from six contributors (18 pages per issue), plus extras such as artists sketches etc.

Then there'll be a break in publication before the next seven issue volume begins.

Readers subscribe to volumes which cost £6.99/$10 per seven issue volume.

Including at least one from these boards (as anyone following their blog will know).

1. Be extremely careful seeking or taking medical advice off the internet, no matter how plausible it sounds or how much they know about British comics.

Nonsense!! Having successfully diagnosed the onset of a heart attack online I feel perfectly qualified to say that this... womb stuff, probably. Go and see a fanny doctor, they'll know what this is.

However, if you want me to give you a second opinion then this is possibly the best advice:

Quote from: Dandontdare on 04 August, 2012, 10:58:30 PM4. If you get recurrent or persistent symptoms, be more assertive with your GP. say 'if you've done all you can, I'd like to be referred to a consultant and/or physiotherapist'. You may have to wait for a while on the NHS though. If they're irredeemably uncooperative, change your doctor

Being more assertive with your doctor (although try not to segue from assertive into rude or mad) can have results. Especially, in this age of cuts, they might be hoping most non-specific ailments just get better of their own accord and need a bit of a nudge.

Right the only medication I take daily is Paracetamol with codine for pain (I suffer with a perminant headache... there is no known cause or bloody cure) Although I suspect that its due to my orthodontic treatment. cause that is when it started. I think the nerves around my jaw * head have been... moved.

Is it located in a specific area? A couple of years back I was diagnosed with atypical trigeminal neuralgia but that took 18 months to 2 years because it is usually always misdiagnosed first (I am just lucky they didn't initially think it was a brain tumour, as that would have added a lot of worry on top - if it had been the lower nerve they often pull your teeth out first). There are cluster headaches and other similar forms of head pain that can be tricky to pin down. If it started with orthodontic treatment then it could be some form of TMD.

Anyway have a read around online and see what fits, as I'd be surprised if both these problems are unexplainable. Granted doctors may roll their eyes when patients whip out reams of printouts and you have to be careful about Internet-induced hypochondria, but it is also important to be informed as it can help move your treatment forward.

Oh and don't forget:

Jordie Bellaire looking for a temporary colouring assistant/flatter, paid work that could get your foot in the door over the Pond:

QuoteTEMPORARY COLOR ASSISTANT/FLATTER NEEDED. TO START IMMEDIATELY.

Can be based anywhere as long as availability, communication and schedule are kept.

This is a paid position that will help you learn the business and the professional production of comics. It will mainly focus on coloring and preparing files for print. This would be helpful for anyone who wants to professionally produce a colored comic. I will also be available for anything you'd be interested in comics wise, whether or not it is critiques, private one on one tutorials or even asking artist/inker Declan Shalvey (Venom, Thunderbolts, 28 Days Later) some questions here and there.

Availability is important, internet connection is a must, photoshop skills are required. If interested please e-mail me at whoajordie@gmail.com.

This is a fantastic opportunity, good luck to our wannabe artdroids.

One thing I'm unclear on:

Quote from: Molch-R on 02 August, 2012, 11:00:38 AMBudding artists should view the rules and free sample script on the Thought Bubble website, draw their own version of the script, and bring their efforts to the portfolio sessions being held at the 2000 AD table* at the Thought Bubble Comic Con on Saturday 17 November. The six best efforts chosen by Tharg himself will then go before the searing eyes of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, with the winner being accorded the privilege of becoming a paid comic book artist for 2000 AD!

And from the TB site:

QuoteWinners will be shown at a special 2000 AD portfolio review panel at the Thought Bubble Comic Con on Sunday 19th November.

So Tharg picks a shortlist on Saturday but how does the winner get picked? At the Sunday panel or do we humble readers get to pick the winner somehow?
