Title: 2000ad graphic novels
Post by: zep on 03 June, 2003, 11:51:23 PM
just got a couple of dredd graphic novels (emerald isle + death aid) out of my school library. not classics but having only known about, let alone buy, 2000ad for 6 months I wanted to see some more thrills. I also read the much-loved 'complete ballad of halo jones' but didn't enjoy it (the first 2/3 pages :) ) i want to buy some of the classic ones - necropolis, cursed earth, judge death etc and other ones, not involving judge dredd. i liked the look of glimmer rats and a few others.

basically i just want people to tell me which ones they enjoy(ed) and which i sould buy.

I still can't get over yuo not liking Halo Jones, but each to his own I suppose.  What you should read depends what you've enjoyed so far, but Rebellion are just starting up a nice new graphic novel series so you're in luck.  If you want something funny, Hewligan's Haricut is out in hardback in August and The Complete D.R. & Quinch is already available paperback.  For something a bit more downbeat Button Man I: The Killing Game  and Necronauts are out in August aswell.

And don't forget the Dredd classics (some of which you already mentioned), i.e. Apocalypse War, Necropolis (I think both books of these are available now) and my favourite, America.

Did you say you got them from a school library?  Pretty bloody fantastic school.

How did you get on to 2000AD?

Any of the titan hardback editions are worth the dosh, The Cursed Earth, The Day The Law Died and Nemesis: Death To All Aliens.
The best two are Slaine: The King, purely for the McMahon artwork on Sky Chariots, it is the best 2000AD artwork ever. Just got the Apocalypse war sent to me today and it looks great.

What a great school library you have!
My favourites graphic novels are: The Pit, Necropolis and Goodnight Kiss.  I also like Book of the Dead and Babes in Arms.

happy reading,

Floyd

ps I think the Cursed Earth is a classic but I`ve only read the beginning.

Old Titan GNs are worth looking out for.

My favourites are the Zenith ones (which are apparently quite sought-after) and, with Dredd, Cursed Earth and Apocalypse War/Block Mania.

Pretty much anything Dredd is worth a look.

I'm not up on the more recent GNs, but loved the look of the one with Judge Death on the front.

For recommendations, I find a friendly comic book shop is the best bet.

To get to Newcastle Forbidden Planet, go to the monument and walk down to the railway station or vice versa.

is it nearer to the station or monument? grainger street right?
Title: Re: 2000ad graphic novels............
Post by: paulvonscott on 11 June, 2003, 11:26:26 PM
Yes, Grainger Street.

It's a bit nearer to the station, only a two minute walk though either way.

If you are at the monument, basically the centre of the toon, and were to walk out of the entrance to Eldon Square and take the first main street on your right, stay on the right hand side of the road, you will pass the barclays on the left hand side of the road, a mcdonalds on the right, and soon enough get to Forbidden Planet.

If you are at the station, just leave the station, cross the road, turn right and then the first left up the gentle hill which is grainger street and you'll come to it soon enough.

It's dead easy to spot.  If you really don't know, just ask someone where grainger street is.

thanks.

do they have any marvel comics (uncanny x-men, new x-men) and any marvel/dc graphic novels?
Title: Re: 2000ad graphic novels............
Post by: paulvonscott on 12 June, 2003, 03:08:00 AM
probably, they sell comics and graphic novels, i've nevr looked for marvel/dc stuff.

If you are going to newcastle, also look upstairs in the Greenmarket as there is a pretty good second hand place.

Sigh... the Greenmarket.  Start at the entrance to Eldon Square, but turn right away from grainger street down a side street which will take you onto a parralell road to grainger street.  You will see a green signed market thing.  Go in there, upstairs and wander about.

However, if you go anywhere near Middlesborough, ignore FPI in the centre and walk for at least five minutes,  up Linthorpe road, past qwik save, to a semi desrted shopping arcade called the forbes building.  Downstairs is a RPG shop and upstairs Books N'Comics, which sell the Universes greatest comic, Solar Wind!

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend Uncanny X-Men, it's awfull. Try Spiderman, or Tangled Web, or Fantastic Four instead. I'm begging you to stay clear of uncanny...it really is awful.

Ah, your reading the British reprints I take it.

It's pretty good stuff. Considering it's provenance then it's bloody amazing stuff.

New writer too. I'm considering dropping it, because I'm spending too much and it seems like a good point to do it.

New X-Men is the only must-have Marvel book, IMO.

Title: Re: 2000ad graphic novels............
Post by: W. R. Logan on 14 June, 2003, 03:57:57 PM
If I remember correctly no, the initial pack is free, but if you order Comics International with any orders it?ll cost you 50p and previews which is a must with advance ordering is ?2, Illuminations is the Ace Comic shops own magazine/fanzine and that was always free to people who used the advance ordering system. The pack you would have been sent is there to entice you down the dark path of comics buying by mail order & previews.

Remember mail order is quicker and more seductive but will ultimately result in the destruction of your bank balance.
