Film & TV / 2000 AD on The One Show tonight!
24 February, 2012, 11:44:21 AM
Don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere but there'll be a feature about comics on The One Show tonight featuring appearances by, not only Stan 'The Man' Lee, but also our very own gorgeous, pouting Si Spurrier, Jock and Michael Molcher.

Set your video. Molcher gets his kit off.

Books & Comics / Desert Island Comics
30 November, 2011, 03:13:12 PM
I saw this on Twitter and thought it might be good fun, so I've nicked it.

So, same premise as 'Desert Island Discs'; which comics would you want to have with you if you were stranded on a desert island? Single issues, series and graphic novels are all valid choices.

Mine would be -

Promethea - Vols 1-5 - I know it divides comic fans, even Alan Moore fans, but it's one of my all time favourite comics. I love the complexity of the different story threads weaving in and out of each other, all the wordplay, metaphore and stuff about magic and the world of imagination. I find it incredibly life affirming and could read it over and over again.

Judge Dredd - Case Files Vols 2-7 - 'Nuff said.

Flaming Carrot - Vols 1-5 - Endlessly inventive, surreal, hilarious, unpredictable and fascinating. No matter how many times I read Flaming Carrot, I always end up laughing out loud. There's nothing else even remotely like it out there.

Hellboy - Vols 1-5 - Beautiful Mignola art illustrating these strangely haunting folk tales. Hellboy always pulls me into it's weird world to the point where I can almost imagine it's all really happening somewhere.

Right, that's mine. Anyone else playing?

Books & Comics / Strip Magazine # 1
01 November, 2011, 02:07:46 PM
I've just been and picked this up from my local comic shop and I thought I'd bag the thread despite the fact that I've not had time to read it yet.

First impressions are that it looks lovely. We've all seen PJ's gorgeous cover and it looks even better in the flesh. It's printed on glossy paper throughout and all the art looks great. There seem to be loads of different strips, all with a unique style, just as an anthology should be.

There are a couple of text features too, a piece about Action comic and a lengthy interview with PJ Holden.

I'm very excited about this. 68 pages of full colour (mostly) comic action for 3 quid! I'll give it a read tonight and post some further thoughts.

Anyone else managed to pick up a copy?

To me, Hivemind!

I usually get a couple of 'graphic novels' each month when payday comes around and this month I wanted to get a few recommendations from youse guys. Typically I buy a 2000 AD trade and a couple of volumes of manga but this month I want something different.

I'm mainly interested in British creators/Tharg's droids although I'm also partial to some european stuff and the odd bit of manga. No Americans though. Unless they can stop banging on about super-heroes.

Also, no Mark Millar, Garth Ennis or Warren Ellis as I've read quite a bit of all their stuff and I've come to the conclusion that it's dogshit.

So, anybody got any suggestions?

Books & Comics / Comic Heroes #9
20 October, 2011, 06:04:23 PM
Just got this through the post today and have just started to flick through it.

There's a large interview with Tharg about all things 2000 AD, including up-coming thrills and one of the pictures contains some pretty massive Stontium Dog spoilers.

There are a couple of panels from the new series of 'Life and Death of Johnny Alpha' which clearly show
Johnny, after his resurrection, recovering on a spaceship/transport with the very much alive Middenface and Precious. He also has his 'weird-eyes' fully intact.
Haven't looked at the rest of it yet but there's a huge 'free' Cradlegrave poster and a Spider-Man keyring which I'll be giving to my son.

Just a quick question. Does anyone know if these 'case files' style Rogue Trooper reprints reprint the whole original run of stories? There are only two volumes out at the moment and I can't seem to find a list of contents.

If they don't include everything, are there plans to release a third volume?

I was considering ordering them but I only want them if I can get the complete run.

Thanks!

Help! / Why an ipad and not a laptop?
17 October, 2011, 11:24:18 AM
My missus, in an uncharacteristic show of impulsiveness, has announced that she wants to get an ipad for family use. She's convinced it would be good for the kids to use for education, she could surf and listen to music on it, and I could download films and use it for drawing and making comics.

I'm not really up on what the ipad is capable of so I thought I'd see if anybody on here is more clued up.

My question is, is an ipad going to be any use for doing all that? Can you surf the net as well as on a laptop? Can you download films and music onto it? Does it have a decent memory capacity? Are the educational apps any cop? Most importantly (to me); how practical is it to use as a tool for drawing/making comics?

Would we be better off spending the money on a £500.00 laptop or would the ipad do all the stuff we want and would it do it well?

Cheers for any advice!

EDIT - Apologies if any of this has already been covered. With no 'Search' bar it's impossible to find.

Anyone know if this is worth going to?

Is it mainly overpriced collectors items or will I find some cheap bargains?

Books & Comics / Marvel classics at The Works
07 September, 2011, 09:03:12 AM
Howdy. Just a heads up that (in the Leeds store at least) The Works are currently selling mini graphic novels featuring classic Marvel stories.

They're about the size of a paperback book, printed on glossy paper, full colour and about 200 pages (at a guess).

They've got a couple of Spider-Man ones (including the 'Death of Captain Stacey' storyline with lovely John Romita art), a couple of Hulk ones (early Herb Trimpe stuff), a couple of Fantastic Four ones (Kirby), a couple of X Men (Chris Claremont era) and a Venom one.

They're 3 for £5 which is a right bargain. I'm off in today to get me a Spidey/Hulk/FF combo.

Off Topic / Frill Powered Fortieth!
06 May, 2011, 02:03:45 PM
It's my birthday on the 31st of May and much to my surprise and disgust, I'll be turning 40.

My brother has asked me what I want, as he wants to get me something 'special'. His first thought was a Dredd badge from Termight Replicas but sadly they're out of stock.

We are both quite geeky and usually buy each other something comic/sci-fi related (we share the same birthday but I'm 1 year older than him.) so I thought I'd ask youse guys if you might have any off the wall suggestions.

Any ideas?

General / Our Man in Hondo - inexcusably racist?
05 April, 2011, 09:42:11 AM
Last week I bought the Judge Dredd Case Files vol 12 and I've been reading it on the train to work.

I just read the story 'Our Man in Hondo' this morning and I found it pretty tasteless and offensive.

I don't know if I'm just being overly sensitive, what with my missus being Japanese,  but repeated use of the word 'Nip' and the "me so sorry" tone of the narration really got on my nerves.

I realise the story is quite old, published in 1988 I think, but even so it seems anachronistically racist. Imagine if the story was set in Pakistan and the equivalent nicknames and "Oh deary, deary me" language was used.

What do people think?

Books & Comics / Cheap classic comics!
17 March, 2011, 01:44:32 PM
Anyone who lives in a town with The Works discount book shop in it might want to go have a look as they've got some cheap comic collections at the moment.

They have a big hard back collection of Jeff Hawke stories and a big hard back collection of The Spider, both for £1.99 each.

There's also volumes 1 and 2 of the original run of Tank Girl for £2.99 each.

They also had a Superman Returns movie prequel collection, A Star Trek-reboot movie prequel collection and a World of Warcraft hardback. And the Akira Club artbook for really cheap too.

Don't know if they'll have them everywhere but they've got loads of all of them in the Leeds store.

General / Slaine (and other stories) dream artist.
04 February, 2011, 03:26:39 PM
So, I was just wondering who would be taking over from Clint Langley on the next Slaine series and thought I'd ask if people had any preference.

I'd love to see Nick Dyer have a go. I think his scratchy, organic style would suit the strip perfectly. I know Pat Mills has said he'll never have Slaine drawn in pen and ink again but I can dream...

I'd also like to see Jon Davis Hunt tackle the ABC Warriors strip. He's brilliant at mech illustrations and he'd bring a real depth to the characters.

Failing that, Liam Sharp could comfortably draw either strip. He's lush (sigh).

So, anyone else got any thoughts? Not just Slaine and the ABC's, any story and any artist you like.

Creative Common / Scanning and emailing A3 artwork
06 October, 2010, 10:33:39 AM
Hey all. Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum. I had a quick look but can't see anything.

Does anyone have any advice about the best way to scan A3 art using an A4 scanner? Also, what's the best resolution to scan black and white (or graytoned) inked artwork for emailing purposes?
I'm currently scanning the top and bottom halves seperately at 300 DPI and sending 2 different files. Is it possible to re-attach the 2 halves before I send them? If so, how?

Apologies for being thick at computers but with your help, I'll learn.

Film & TV / 2000AD TV appearance
19 August, 2010, 11:10:32 AM
This is my first attempt to access the knowledge of the hive mind, hope someone can help.

I'm trying to locate a TV show from the late 90's early 00's, possibly from BBC2. It was a multi part series about science fiction, very well done and interesting with a different focus each week, including an episode devoted to 2000AD.

I remember a panel of fans being asked what their favourite moments were and the "GAZE INTO THE FIST OF DREDD!" panel was shown and discussed.

Can anyone tell me what the show was called and if possible, where I can see it again?

Thanks in advance.

Hello everybody! I haven't been on the site for a long while (mainly due to the fact that I couldn't get on past the work filter which suddenly doesn't seem to mind any more) and I was never very active anyway so I thought I'd introduce myself again.

I've been quite an active poster on the 2000ad review site for the past 4 or 5 years so some of you may know me from there. I read 2000ad as a nipper but then stopped in the early 90's when it seemed to get a bit crap. I started reading again at prog 1300 and I've been a subscriber ever since.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you all and finding out where you live so I can stalk and murder you.

Games / nintendo wifi connection
19 April, 2006, 02:49:48 AM
Hi peeps. I've just got a wireless router in my house so I've been playing several Nintendo DS games online against random people from god knows where. I just wondered if any of you have any of the following games and are able to play online--
Tetris
Mario Kart
Animal Crossing
Metroid Prime: Hunters

If so, what do you need to swap friend codes?
