I didn't play the sequels much but Arkham Asylum is a top 10 game for me, with the Scarecrow nightmare sequence(s) an absolute standout.

The Enigmatic Dr X

I loved Knight. It was like the other two, but with the Batmobile.

Definitely Not Mister Pops

I didn't care much for Knight. It was like the other two, but with too much big stupid tank and too little stealth.
You may quote me on that.

Quote from: milstar on 24 May, 2021, 10:30:58 PMI'd have to go with Batman Arkham, but Asylum. I find it the least pretentious in the series. Tbh, there are not many superhero games out there, so that may work a bit in the Knight's favor.
The core Arkham games are still the gold standard. The first set the tone, the second arguably the best, and the third a satisfying conclusion (including a personal top ten gaming moment - driving the defeated and indignant Riddler to the GCPD lock-up).

I have an issue with Arkham games, all made after Asylum. Asylum had a comic book feel than the rest and it was non-pretentious. Every single game crumbles under the authors' ambition. City, for e.x, had Hugo Strange discovering Batman's identity, and you would think it would intensify the gameplay, but it didn't. It went nowhere. Same with the toxic poisoning, notwithstanding that Joker lived for weeks, while you were supposed to die in several hours. And in both cases, the game misses to motivate you to engage in it. And I didn't like that City throws you in the lap of one supervillain after another. But basically, the plot is lame. And for some reason, I find the graphics inferior to Arkham Asylum.

Arkham Origins is quite a solid prequel to Arkham City, but it feels too much like the City, so I observe it as full-blooded DLC than the full-blooded game.

Knight... The story quickly goes nowhere. Joker is again the main antagonist, after Scarecrow. And quite unnecessarily. Hallucination scenes bring nothing to the game, apart from more Batman-Joker dynamic, which is done to death in the previous games. Side missions are mostly uninspired. I'd single out Professor Pyg and capturing Killer Croc as scenery-chewing in that regard, but everything else is a disappointment, in one way or another. The game loses momentum in the second half. Scarecrow is not Bane. Batmobile, while driving mechanics are great, is vastly overused. And for further blasphemy, he's required for solving Riddler puzzles. I mean, couldn't developers make something that is casual puzzle solving, like in Arkham City, instead of casually beating the lap time that we got?
And yes, the PC version is horribly hackneyed. From a technical standpoint.

All fair comment. But it let me fly about Gotham City, then land in the Batmobile. So... that wins.

after being let down by Returnal (not much fun) and R-Type Final 2 (not very good), I've given Zombie Army 4 a go (in co-op).  Good fun actually.  Just what I needed.

Resi Evil Village just turned up.  Looking forward to playing it.

Currently reviewing the Capcom Arcade Stadium retro collection.  Is what you'd expect (games from the '80s that are good but also far too hard).

I think my post might be controversial, but when you mentioned RE Village, to me, that game is an example of how fandom can get ahead of themselves. Some people rushed to worship Lady Dimitrescu, whose design is nothing that stands out, apart from being heghty, when her presence in the game is some 20-30 minutes.

Ah, so I think the appeal of Lady D may be lost on you. Personally, I find myself rather less than immune.

As you say, RE8 is not actually The Adventures of the Cool Giant Vampire Woman. Suspect the next one will be, though.

I think a lot of lately RE heroes and villains may be lost on me.

i must be more susceptible to games than most re RE Village
the main character having his hand bitten off - so for the remainder of the game you have half a hand
and then
having your body hung up with hooks and you have to tear your hands out
is beyond my comprehension of entertainment - just found it really sick

though i know lots of people love films like 'saw' etc

I have to agree. I've no appetite for Saw-like torture porn movies. I bought RE:7 (Biohazard) on the strength of its reviews, but put it down after an hour of unbelievably bloody and gratuitous abuse at the hands of the game's protagonists. Not my cup of tea.

Jonathan Boakes' The Lost Crown: Ghost Hunting Adventure

Jonathan Boakes is a video game designer and writer and in spare time, ghost hunter and investigator of paranormal phenomena. I suppose it was natural to him to make a horror point n click adventure that deals with these subject. And here's The Lost Crown, which he did with the help of the makers of Barrow Hill. The maain character, Nigel Danvers (Boakes alter-ego; Boakes provides the voice for his protagonist as well) arrives in a small, harbor (fictional) town of Saxton in the search for the crown, thought to be lost, that is told in ancient legends. And like always, the town is not really what it seems and apparently, some characters that Nigel interacts with, seem to be - deceased. The Lost Crown is a solid adventure; entertaining adventure for sure, and creepy as hell for it. It employs stark black n white imagery, while few objects are in vivid colors. Not to mention surrounding fog, that for my money, and considering significant ambiguity presented in the game, makes it as if you play it in Nigel dreams. If there is something that I had issue with, is the very slow pacing, which like in the case of Barrow Hill, involves a painfully lot of backtracking and interacting with every possible object you can find (even though the solution is right in front of you), which sometimes results in me loosing my nerves and going to online walkthrough. The game does require steely concentration.

I played NMS back when it was the vanilla version.  I actually enjoyed it in a relaxing kind of way.  I keep feeling I need to go back, especially with the PS5 upgrade, but I'm worried it'll be too complex now with all that base building stuff to worry about.
