I'm currently sorting out my 2000AD collection....basically an excuse to reread old issues!...and it got me thinking that if I could create a dream Prog featuring 5 strips and perfect creative teams from the comic's long history, what would it contain.

After much deliberation, mine would be;

Judge Dredd by John Wagner/Alan Grant & Steve Dillon
Slaine by Pat Mills & Mike McMahon
Strontium Dog by Alan Grant & Carlos Ezquerra
Rogue Trooper by Gerry Finley-Day & Cam Kennedy
Bad Company by Pete Milligan & Brett Ewins

My prog is clearly driven by 80s nostalgia and there are some greats missing, but tough choices needed to be made.

I'd love to know what other people's dream progs would be.
Only rules are that it can only contain 5 strips, and the strips must be by creative teams that worked on the relevant characters at some point  :)

It's going to be mostly 80s progstalgia again from me...

Dredd by Wagner and Jock.
Sláine (pre-Horned God) by Mills and Bisley or Fabry.
Another Rogue Trooper flashback by John Smith and Dillon/ Walker or even Dave Gibbons.
Zenith by Morrison and Yeowell.
Nemesis by Mills and O'Neill.
And a Milligan/ McCarthy Sooner or Later on the back cover.

"Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest"

I struggled with Slaine as I also loved the Fabry and Bisley art. I just needed to get McMahon in there somewhere and his art on Slaine was SO cool.....and completely forgot about Zenith! ::)

Nice idea. I would go for (in this sequence):

Nikolai Dante - Morrison & Fraser
Robo Hunter - Wagner, Grant & Gibson
Dredd - Wagner & Dillon
Aquila - Rennie & Gallagher
Strontium Dog - Wagner & Carlos

So a heavy workload there for Wagner. And I would have Bolland draw the cover.

Judge Dredd - Wagner, Grant and McMahon
The Ballad of Halo Jones book 10 - Moore and Gibson
Nemesis the Warlock - Mills and O'Neill
Slaine - Mills and Kincaid (because I wish she'd drawn more than one episode)
Zenith - Morrison and Yeowell

and a one-page Sooner or Later by Milligan and McCarthy.
AIEEEEEE! It's the...THING from the HELL PLANET!

AdamStrange

All great suggestions. I wrestled with putting Nikolai Dante in mine too (although by Morrison & Burns for me) but it was edged out by Bad Company.
If I'm chucking in a one page back cover it would have to be DR & Quinch by Alan Moore and Alan Davis

Swerty

Well it'd have to be
Bolland on Dredd
Dan Dare by Gibbons
Robo Hunter Gibson
Blackhawk Belardinelli
Slaine McMahon

You have to hand it to Robbie Morrison - the only droid to break through our 80s progstalgia!  Never thought I'd say it in the early days of Dante, but I'd throw a Burns episode in there if my dream prog wasn't already full.

Here's my dream prog:

Nikolai Dante by Robbie Morrison & Simon Fraser
Judge Dredd by John Wagner & Mike McMahon
ABC Warriors by Pat Mills & Kevin Walker
Strontium Dog by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra
Slaine by Pat Mills & Greg Staples
Sinister Dexter by Dan Abnett and Simon Davis
Nemesis The Warlock by Pat Mills & Kevin O'Neill
Judge Dredd by Alan Grant & Cam Kennedy
Rogue Trooper by John Tomlinson & Dave Gibbons

Throw in a Brian Bolland cover, maybe a new thrill by Gordon Rennie & Mark Harrison...

Something sounds very familiar about this  :D

For those of us not in the know, did David Bishop actually produce a prog with this line up?

edit: Someone has already found it

Dream prog?

  • Wagner Dredd + McMahon art – or Tom Foster if McMahon is in hiding
  • Something by Abnett, ideally illustrated by Elson
  • Something by Edginton, assuming Tharg can lock him in a room long enough to write a script, ideally illustrated by D'Israeli or Culbard
  • Alan Moore Future Shock/Time Twister, with art by anyone
  • Something new, by whoever, as per whatever Tharg reckons we need to see, because new ideas are what keep 2000 AD fresh and alive

EDIT: Oh, and a Droid Life, because they're fun.

This is all fine, but I gave myself a couple of new rules:

1. Each thrill by a different team - otherwise I'd end up with something like a Dream of Edginton Being Cloned Prog with Dredd, Helium, Scarlet Traces, Kingmaker and Brass Sun (plus an ad for a new series of Ampney).

2. Creators that are still working. Apart from the sad fact that we're all mortal, some creators aren't the same creative force they used to be, and it's difficult for me to untangle that. I want to dream about a prog I could actually read!

With that sensibility, here's my listing:

Judge Dredd: TimeQuake by Ken N-AI-mand, Chris Weston & Rob Steen
Sequel to prog 2350's Demon With a Six-Gun.
Indigo Prime: The Tyranny by Kek-W, Lee Carter & Gary Caldwell
Tyranny Rex features in the ongoing saga.
Durham Red: No Country by Alec Worley, Ben Willsher & Annie Parkhouse
Red is up against a ruthless, sociopathic enforcer.
Brink: Open Heart by Dan Abnett, INJ Culbard & Simon Bowland
We board one of the dark Mercury vessels.
Jaegir: Blackmares by Gordon Rennie, Simon Coleby, Len O'Grady & Jim Campbell
Captured GIs are tortured to create a powerful new psi-weapon.

Finally, a teaser for Judge Dredd: Sector Mechanismo by John Wagner, Colin MacNeil & Annie Parkhouse

Indeed:

Aw man, that was some prog.  Who was Tharg's right hand man there? Dig-L?
