Other Reviews / Re: Dredd: The Complete Case Files

Nearly a year on (best not to rush in) from my post asking where to go as I wasn't enjoying the early teens of CF...

I've just finished volume 24 as recommended and loved it. Barring a few small blips it was excellent. Great to be back on the old Lawmaster again. Thanks for the advice. Loving forward to the next few volumes very much.  :D

Groovy. Thanks for the input.

I've read to 15, not 16. I lied.  :D

I liked the fact that things got a bit political but so far my preferred things about Dredd were the crisp b&w art (Ron Smith is my favourite) and the OTT satire on mc1 life. The last few felt gloomy and I've enjoyed the art much less in colour. I've enjoyed the Dredd I've read in the progs I've picked up over the last couple of years, though.

Ill give 24 a bash. Thanks again!

Hi. I've read from 1 to 16 now and am disappointed to say that I've really not enjoyed the last few. The reviews on Amazon for the next 4 or 5 volumes make it sound like they suck pretty hard too.

To save me further woe, which collection do you think would be a good point to jump back in? Cheers!

I bought this from Forbidden Planet last weekend (along with Robo-Hunter Vol 1) but not read any yet.

As a non-veteran, is it all Future Shocks material or also short stories?

Cheers!

Elephantmen Volume 1. Fun so far. Feels a lot like 2000AD.

Also read East Of West volume 1. Could be great. I think it depends how it evolves! Vol 2 is out now. Must get.

These are my first experiences with Image Comics. Positive impression so far.

The downbeat feeling is so right, and darkly humorous. Whatsizname, for example. Or the take on a romantic scene where Halo is writing a letter to Rodice from an empty observation deck on the Clara Pandy and the handsome biogeneticist turns up. Lovely.  ;)

Just finished book 2 of the latest reprint. Absolutely loving it. I really enjoyed the quick immersion into a different world, and the slow but steady pace of revelation. Very, very impressed so far.

Hi.

I can't seem to reply to any topics in Other Reviews. There's no button. There is in other areas, though (General).

Am i just being thick?  :)

Thanks!

Books & Comics / Re: GARTH ENNIS PLANES and BOYS

I loved Preacher. Was what got me interested in comics as a 20 year old "adult" and is the bench mark for all comics that pass my eyes. So Ennis is a big deal for me.

Read the first 2 volumes of The Boys. I liked it. Funny in places, and I like what he did with costumed "heroes", but I didn't enjoy it enough to carry on. There was no character (apart from the female, perhaps) I was actually interested in. Seems a silly thing to say but I found it a bit TOO crass. Felt like he was trying a bit too hard.

I read Kick-Ass a while back and preferred that twist on caped crusaders/filth for the sake of it.

I wonder if as adults we get more sensitive to what kids can process than needs be?

Yes, this is probably it. And maybe the underlying heart of my question.

Only read the first few episodes of Flesh but it's hilarious so far!  :D

These strips really are just the ticket for me right now.

Thanks for the replies, all.

General / What age group was/is 2000AD aimed at?
03 June, 2013, 12:59:35 PM
Hi, all.

First post. Be gentle! ;)

As a 39 year old reading Dredd (and now Strontium Dog and Flesh) I'm curious who the target audience is (or is perceived to be). And what ages are reading it now.

I was aware of it but didn't read it as a kid. Read some Marvel, DC, Scream and relaunched Eagle but not 2000AD, somehow. The humour and setting feels suitable for anyone able to appreciate it. And even though there's lots of violence it all feels like good fantastical fun.

However, I just finished Dredd Case Files 05 and thought that the Apocalypse War was a bit strong for kids. (I felt some other things about it too but will save them for now)

Thoughts?

Cheers!

Welcome to the board / Re: Welcome to 2000AD Online

Hi, all. Hope you're all well.

Late thirties latecomer to 2000AD. Read some relaunched Eagle, Scream, etc, as a kid but don't remember ever reading 2000AD. Dunno why. Got Dredd Case Files 01 case files soon after it came out and have been picking up one a year or so since. Just finished Case Files 05 and am reading the first Strontium Dog Agency Files and Flesh just arrived last week too.

I'm at a very picky stage of my life where almost all forms of entertainment are not quite cutting the mustard, for one reason or another, but loving the 2000AD thrills. :D

(I don't remember the Stallone Dredd being that camp! Hilarious! General film opinion aside, I still maintain Sly had THE CHIN for Dredd...)

Cheers!
