General / Re: Dan Dare has landed...

Got mine yesterday.  Went with Amazon when they announced the Special Edition was only a reprint of the Poster Prog which I already had.  Had it been a signed / limited edition Gibbons print I would have been in there like a shot.  It is gorgeous mind.  This plus the next two Mega collection books are my weekend reading (when I can find 30 seconds in between all the bloody planning I need to get sorted for next week!)

Shame. No reason to go into a comic shop now.
Any chance of a Forbidden Planet signing event for the Summer Special launch?

Somewhere outside of London so the rest of the country get a look in even?

Books & Comics / Re: New Johnny Red series!?!

My comics bundle turned up today and I am SOOOOOO glad that I added this to the subs.  Bit of a no brainer.  Not familiar with Burns' artwork but it works well.  Ennis goes with a standard trope to get the story started and bring unfamiliar readers up to speed.  It is a different beast to the old Battle stuff on one level.  No doubt benefitting from more pages per episode.  There are however certainly similarities and it does read like an old friend.  Ennis' love of the genre and old Battle characters shines through and I for one am looking forward to seeing where he takes it.  Almost makes up for Titan cancelling the fourth volume (got the email through earlier this week!)

The droids responsible have been ... reassigned.

Cor, talk about getting soft.  Back in the day Mek Quake would have had at them before you could blink!  Reassignment?  That's soft that is!

A fine story by the Car-rolled crash-test droid,

That nearly ended up in the 'things that went over my head' thread!   ::)

On the cover front, I did have a chuckle over the nod to the illustrious Mr Kennedy in the graffiti.

I would have to agree on Brass Sun.  This series seems to be picking up nicely now and shaping up into one of the strengths of the prog.  Defoe?  not sure yet.  As you say, up until now it really hasn't offered owt to make it worth the effort.  Perhaps moving forward we'll see something worth sitting up for.

I'm going to hold judgement on Bad Company until the end.  I'm not a massive fan of Mr Dayglo's art and considering the shoes he has to fill, to quote from Blackadder, I have to admire his balls.

Sorry, Tim - I was trying to be funny, not having a pop.

Nae probs.  I should still have been clearer.  I think when the mods redesign the site next they should include <joking></joking> and <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags.  In fact I think the whole internet would be better off  with such tags at times.

There'll be a logo and a bar code on top of the published version?

Sorry, I should have been a bit more detailed.  I deserved that.

The bit that caught my eye was the 'variant' cover.  This suggests that there may be more than one cover so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the alternate cover.

Books & Comics / Starlord (UK, 1978)
29 October, 2015, 04:05:52 PM
I've gone back to these again after a long while.  I still have fond memories of picking up issue 2 in Watford way back in the day.  In fact it rivalled tooth to such an extent that I switched to Starlord for a while, particularly following the irregularities that resulted from the strikes of the time.  It was only with the merger that I came back to the fold. Looking again after all these years it is amazing how well it has weathered.  Granted some of the tales have not weathered as well as the others but overall the quality is impressive, particularly when you consider the talent lined up.  Redondo, Ian Kennedy, Ezquerra, Gibbons, Grover ...

I've always felt that Ezquerra did his best work on the early Strontium Dog's.  His particular talent for the bizarre in these tales was probably best equalled by the Hell's dominion storyline circa issue 100 of tooth.  The tales themselves are remarkably well written for a strip in it's infancy.  The other rival for star had to be Mind Wars with Redondo turning out some outstanding work.  The intricacy of the artwork is outstanding.

Some of the early Robusters leave a bit to be desired at times and show the influence of the age, a sort of cross between Thunderbirds and the Disaster Movie tropes of the times.  Artwork by Kennedy and Gibbons goes a long way to make up for the weakness in the writing at times.  The other weaker strips that came and went, TimeQuake, Holocaust, Planet of the Damned all read well.

Night Garden is surreal enough as is but I really do think there is scope for an adult satire.  Doubt BBC would look on it kindly though, humourless bar stewards!

I'd have to give a recommend to Midnight Nation.  Nice little read and very underrated for my money.  Nice artwork and an interesting story.
