Books & Comics / You've read Rising Stars, right?
« on: 20 June, 2015, 02:24:20 AM »
ive just posted in the Crisis thread and it reminded, via New Statesman, of Joe Straczynski's Rising Stars. Simply the best superhero story of them all. Thing is, I'm not sure anyone else read it. As far as I'm concerned its better than anything DC ever did, and is up there with watchmen, or Zenith, or whichever you care to name.

Just sayin

General / What bit of nikolai Dante was published out of order
« on: 03 November, 2014, 10:40:22 PM »
im currently reading through nikolai Dante and can remember an interview (or something) that mentioned that one of the stories had to be rewritten or was simply published out of order due to artwork not being ready on time. Can anyone remind me what bit it was? I think it was Fraser taking too long or other commitments and John burns' stuff was ready...

No spoilers please, I'm up to prog 1220 now.

Cheers

Games / What is gamergate?
« on: 13 October, 2014, 02:53:40 AM »
i don't game. Is that how you say it? But I follow some people on Twitter that do. What's going on in the world. It seems some men want to rape women that play games or create them. Or kill their children or something.

But recently there were #notallgamers tags, and now #gamergate. What are they? I tried to research it but I'm old and the Internet is clearly starting to leave me behind.

Film & TV / DS9 - season 4 on scyfy
« on: 23 June, 2014, 10:30:17 AM »
I never watched this before. I saw most of the first three years on tv way back when it was on and quite liked and I think I either got bored or they started jiggling it around in the listings/scheduling. Anyway, it's about 15 years old now and I've watched the first five eps as they're running in order on scyfy at midnight each weeknight.

Thoughts...

Oh my god Siskos acting is shocking!! In fact most of the acting is shocking. Dax is terrible too, and bashir, and obrien, and odo! How did they get away with it? It's so hammy. And yet, it's quite good fun. The story lines I've enjoyed, and it has more pathos than I thought. Episode 3, where jake and Sisko are in an inverted worm hole accident and jake lives out his life without his father was really quite affecting. And episode 5 where kyra and dukat go looking for survivors of a lost ship also has great moments.

Worf is a great fit in the cast as his acting was always shit too!

Everything is shot in terrible 90's tv orange, and the sets and make up in high def are quite shoddy. And yet, so far it totally gets the thumbs up from me.

I know some of the things that happen later on in the show as I've seen the odd episode here and there over the years, but I'm looking forward to it all now.

I'll let you know what I think of the next five eps - coz I know you're all dying to hear my review.

As you were, commander.

General / probably bad idea - what's your favourite prog?
« on: 25 October, 2013, 04:45:28 AM »
This may be a silly question.  But what's your favourite prog EVER?  Is there one that just pressed all your buttons, for whatever reason - be it that all the art was amazing, or a specific story blew you away, or all the stories in that one prog were awesome - whatever your reason, what's the one prog that totally floats your boat, the one you could not do without, the one that makes you feel all warm and nostalgic.

Away you go...

Film & TV / Top Ten Sci Fi Films - make your own list
« on: 16 October, 2013, 09:29:13 PM »
Hello

So the Grauniads Peter Bradshaw has spent all of about 2 minutes compiling a list of what he reckons are the 10 best sci fi movies ever made.

http://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2013/oct/16/top-10-sci-fi-movies

Now, I'm no expert on this sorta thing, but that's a real boring list.  there must be a hundred sci fi top ten lists around t'internet that contain the exact same films in almost the same order.

So here's what i want to know, Ignoring the movies he's already mentioned (they're listed below in case you can't read the article) what are your top ten sci fi films.  I think this will make for really interesting reading and might have you thinking long and hard (fnaar!)

Cheers
Dave

Peter Bradshaws top ten sci fi movies are

metropolis
terminator/terminator 2 (he sacrilegiously puts these two together as one entry!!)
Alien
Star Wars (new Hope)
Matrix
2001: space odyssey
Blade Runner
close encounters of the third kind
ET
solaris

So there you go.  What are your OTHER top ten sci fi movies.  I wont list mine just yet which leave you all with a wide open space to play

Books & Comics / Halo Jones - How did Alan Moore do that?
« on: 12 October, 2013, 05:39:19 AM »
I'd never read Halo Jones (I know!!) in the prog - it was a bout a girl, for goodness' sake.  However, i just got the trade and am completely confused how Alan Moore made book 1 so completely gripping and entertaining and compelling - all they did was go shopping.  Once.

Really looking forward to reading books 2 and 3 now.  Glad i finally caught up with this.

Dave.

Welcome to the board / prodigal son
« on: 19 September, 2013, 09:13:01 PM »
Hello,

I've been lurking for many a moon and have finally felt the need to jump in and say hi.  So i had to register and that meant i had to pick a cool name.  I tried my best.  10p-mix to anyone who gets it (without using google!).

I used to read the prog and have kept all my old ones - i was one of those anal wee kids who cried if it got a crinkle in the corner so they're in damn good nick.  I bought my first prog around episode 7 of Oz and was totally hooked.

I stopped reading after the 'summer offensive' (it still makes me angry) and then stopped buying around 1024.  Everything seemed to have lost it's 2000ad-ness.

In April my wife gave birth to our first child (Lily) and for some reason while i was off on paternity i started buying progs on ebay.  It was quite random (although no denying the Dredd movie did a lot to get me intrigued again - i saw it on the first showing on the day it opened in the cinema and was delighted with it - who wasn't?)  I have had some withering looks from the wife each time more progs arrived in the post but i now have a great collection of all progs from 1500 to present (wanted to start with 'origins').  Alas, the 'joys' of new parenthood means very little time for reading them but im getting there... slowly.

Looking forward to arguing with you all very soon.

peace
Dave.

ps - its good to be back!
