Off Topic / Bounts - anyone used them?
04 January, 2016, 04:08:52 PM
So I came across this site:

https://www.bounts.it/

They seem to give away points, that can be cashed in for gift vouchers at places like Sainsbury's, Toys R Us and Amazon.

Anyone heard of them? Anyone used the site?

I'm guessing they want to syphon away personal data somehow?

For those of us who exercise, and those who need motivation, then it seems a good idea... but it also seems too good to be true.

Games / 4x games: recommendations?
30 December, 2015, 07:35:55 PM
Anyone play these games?

Is Civ 5 the daddy? What of GalCiv 3? Or Endless Legend?

Any others worth looking at?

General / Ulysses Contracts: Resolutions with Teeth
28 December, 2015, 08:32:29 PM
So, I am entering into a Ulysses Contract with my missus.

Regrettably, this has nothing to do with the cartoon.

I've simply got more games than I can play, following some drunken Steam sale purchases, getting a new PS4 and generally getting loads of games from family for Christmas and my birthday. Highlights, unplayed, include:

Bioshock 2 and 3, GTA 4 and 5, Halo 5, Wasteland 2, AssCreeds Black Flag and Syndicate, MGS V, the Uncharted Collection, Deus Ex and Fallout New Vegas.

First world problems? Crass consumerism? Either way, I've promised not to spend any money on games in 2016. If I do, she gets £500 cash to blow on clothes.

There are two caveats: (1) I get to trade in any of the games I have for a new one; (2) I get to play anything I fancy from the free monthly games you get with Xbox Live/ PSN.

If I survive, then I get to buy a shiny new PC in January 2017, along with Doom 4, Fallout 4, Dishonoured 2 and Xcom 2. It's all about the incentives.

So, that's my Resolution with Teeth. Anyone else out there willing to put something on the line, to bring about change caused by the opulence of the West?

General / The Great Spouse Error of 2015
27 November, 2015, 07:42:06 PM
So, we've just converted our garage into a second living room. It's got a telly, a couch, and all that living room stuff.

Somewhere for me and my three boys to play the Xbox while Mrs X watches soaps.

But. I pointed at a bit of freshly-painted wall and said, "that could do with a picture. Could I get some comic art?"

To which the wife said, "the couch is black. It would have to be black and white." (A beat) "You don't actually get black and white comic art, do you?"

And that, my friends, is carte blanche to search for the one and only piece of comic art I will ever be able to hang downstairs.

Any suggestions?

A question for those of us with sprogs.

Do you let them see films with a higher certificate than their age? When?

I take the view that provided I am aware of the content (and I do check) then I am master of what they watch, not a set of arbitrary criteria imposed by a bureaucrat. My view is that I know better what makes my kids tick than someone working to an "average".

So, no shagging but plenty of violence, provided it is goodie v baddie stuff with no moral ambiguity. That's my take. I'm not fussed about language (they hear worse in school) and the violence in most films is the same as some cartoons.

So, Terminator 1 - out for the shagging. Terminator 2 - in.

But what about you? I'm skewed by my folks letting me see pretty much anything (the rude bits were fast-forwarded). But I'm scarred by seeing the Evil Dead at 11.

And, more to the point:

Can my 10 year old see Alien?

And, as Christmas is coming, what about the greatest Christmas movie ever - Die Hard?

Games / MGS: Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain
15 November, 2015, 05:21:29 PM
Is it worth playing Ground Zeroes before Phantom Pain?

Is it a glorified demo or does it add anything (content, inventory or story-wise) to the Phantom Pain?

Games / Easter Eggs

My brother was playing MGS V yesterday.

During a mission, he got an urgent radio message to return to base. So, he did. When he arrived, he got a cut scene of all the characters giving him a birthday cake. 'cos it was his birthday yesterday.

General / Windows 10 - Going in...
18 September, 2015, 09:14:46 PM
So, a recent Windows 7 update borked Football Manager 2006 for me.

After hours trying to get it to unwind but stay secure, I have decided to take up a free upgrade to Windows 10.

This is my last Windows 7 post... wish me luck. See you on the other side!

Games / Castle Crashers on Xbox One
08 September, 2015, 05:17:37 PM
Just read that this is (a) being released as an enhanced edition on the Xbone tomorrow, and (b) is free to anyone who bought it on the 360.

I heartily recommend it. Golden Axe-y RPG lite fun is what it is about.

Anyone grabbing it, I am Nimeous on XBone (and on the PS Network for that matter, but I only have a Vita) and would enjoy some multi-player bashing.
And kicking the crap out you in order to kiss the princess
I've been with Talk Talk since 2012 and using Sky TV for over 16 years (no sports or film subscription)

Prompted by a friend, over the weekend I have prodded both.

Sky gave me £5 off my monthly bill, a new 2TB box and the movie channels. OK, so it's for a year and then the price goes up, but this time I've stuck a note in my diary to review.

Talk Talk weren't keen on giving me anything (well, £2 a month off). So I've just signed up for BT Infinity at £9 a month less. I was paying £40 and now it's £31 a month for unlimited downloads and speed "up to" 38 Mbs but guaranteed to be 27MBs. Those figures include line rental.

The moral of the tale is that we should be shopping around for this stuff.

No doubt I'll be told that everyone does, but I didn't.

My five year got a new toy: a forma-trans.

We have tried to correct him, but with the earnest contempt and innocence of a child he patiently explains:

"No, daddy, it's not a transformer."

General / Bolland's take on Slaine
17 March, 2015, 09:08:17 AM
So, is that cover for Prog 1024 - previewed in the current Meg - the first time that Bolland has drawn Slaine?

And his interpretation reminds me of some other character or person, but who? I cannot put my finger on it.

Games / Assasin's Creed IV: Yes or no?
14 March, 2015, 06:09:48 PM
It's on sale for £8 on Steam.

I've never played an AssCreed game, bar the first one for about an hour. Is IV any good? Am I right in thinking it is the best of them?

How does it play? Is it GTA style roaming plus missions, or more linear? Is it more Dragon Age in mission structure?

Do I need to know what has gone on before to follow its story? (I know the gist of it).

Thanks

Help! / Netflix or equivalent? Recommendation please
10 January, 2015, 12:24:56 PM
I'm thinking about getting one of these Internet telly services.

Any recommendations or warnings?

Is it a straight choice of Netflix or Amazon Prime?

Your help would be appreciated. I don't know any users other than my brother who has Netflix and says "it's okay"

Thanks

Website and Forum / Ooh. Pretty.
03 January, 2015, 01:50:26 PM
I just got me a new monitor, as my old one was dying.

I spent a bit of time configuring it, and now I can actually see the different colours (50 shades of grey!) on this site.

I've never seen this before, not in 13 years of frequenting the forum.

I didn't know, for example, that each post in a thread has an alternating colour. Or that the "Welcome to the Board", "Off Topic" and other boxes on the home page were different shades from the "Last Post" bit.

It was all just white to me!

Off Topic / On being 40
30 December, 2014, 01:58:41 PM
So. On Boxing Day I was 40.

Not only does that mean that I have been drinking with the wife, friends and family every night since, but I also got a watch and two things that I think are well cool:

This

and this

(Which is apparently a limited Onato pen - no, me neither but it's dead fancy - of a type used by Churchill).

Roll on 50, that's what I say.

I'm also going to pool the cash I got and get a monitor.

What do I say when my 7 year old asks:

"How can it be called Judge Death Lives when he isn't alive?"
