Hmmm... another negative/critical post, but this one is really just me trying to see if I am alone in the world surrounded by diseased zombies (like Chuck in the Omega Man).

While i love loads of the old 2000AD series, one I never could understand the popularity of was the VC's.  I had heard a lot of good things about it and bought the Titan Books.  It seemed a bit poor to me, thought I loved the art.  because i was such an obsessive fan, I also had to buy the best of 2000AD issues with it in, even though I knew I already hated it.  Nowadays you have to prise the coins out of my hand with a sharpened spoon to pay for anything.

So, I'd like to here from anyone else who didn't like it and more importantly, what it was that made it so much fun for those who did.  It's a bit of a mystery to me.

Hope all you guys had a good christmas.

By Eagle, I mean new Eagle, plus Action plus all those old IPC comics.

If so I'd like to see Charley's War (Pat Mills) reprinted by Titan and Doomlord from Eagle (you wouldn't believe how funny the strip is when your are all grown up).

I'm sure there would be some sort of market for a retro series from Titan Books.

General / Is Prog 2000AD in the shops?
19 December, 2001, 09:30:53 PM
Yes, I know subscribers have got a copy, good for them.  But I was wondering if anyone has seen it in whsmiths, as I find their stores the easiest to walk out of with copies of 2000AD from without paying.

Yes, that was a joke.  Sort of.  Twice I've walked out of with a copy of 2000AD in a daydream and twice I've gone back and paid, feeling a right old chump.  I must have an honest face to get away with it.

I've just spent twenty minutes harping (screech) on about old series, what do people want from new series?

For me, Halo Jones just seemed to give a glimpse of how little of Halo Jones' life we had really seen.

Nemesis and torquemada, who never could beat each other in the comic (duel by elctric guitars anyone?) finally settled for a no score draw.

Strontium Dog died on a rock at the hands of Alan Grant.  Can we have him wake up in the shower with Ronald Reagan and Durham Red and realise it was all a dream.  Good on Wagner for rewriting it (in a plausable way to boot) I say.

There must be more.  Send in your tragedies!

Have fun

General / Judge Dredd figures ?1.89 each
17 December, 2001, 08:50:03 PM
Bloody hell.  Having paid about ?50 for five figures I have no seen them in a cheapo pound store for ?1.89 each.  How sick do I feel?  Anyway the figures you can get seem to be Strontium Dog, Death and Dredd.  They didn't even have Durham Red which was the only one I hadn't bought.

Anyway I got them from a cheapo shop called The More Store, I'm up in the North East (Wae Aye etc.)if any of you good folk want to get some.  I thought I'd better post it so some fans might get the chance to by them before some opportunistic git clears them out.

They were really pretty cool (with paint jobs varying somewhat) and I was very dissapointed to hear Wake say that they weren't making any more.  I was looking forward to that Dredd on Lawmaster too.

News / Is Prog 2002 out yet!?! I need thrill power!
16 December, 2001, 07:30:05 PM
The site says 12th of December, but it's the 16th and I haven't seen it anywhere, not even in Whsmith's.  I want to read some Bad Company so much it hurts, ooh, ow, etc.

Could someone tell me if they've got a copy (don't tell me what happens in the stories!)?  If they have I may go on some sort of bizarre quest this afternoon.

General / What have I missed between 1992 & 1999?
16 December, 2001, 07:34:23 AM
That roughly is how long I've stayed away from 2000AD, I quit round about the robohunter parody and started getting it again when they brought Nemesis back for the final series.  Would anyone like to fill me in on what classic series I've missed in the meantime?

Help! / Can someone explain Sinister Dexter for me?
14 December, 2001, 08:51:38 PM
Hi there.  I've read a few SD stories and I'll be honest I don't really get it.  I missed out on all the early stuff, so I was just wondering if someone could tell me what's going on, who are they, what sort of world are they in?  (I read the early Nikolai Dante stuff in that collected book and the series made a bit more sense after reading that.)

So far I've gathered they are some sort of hired hitmen who say Funt a lot and end up killing a lot of people.  Was that bloke actually made by Sony?

General / Are 2000AD fans all a pain in the arse?
14 December, 2001, 04:10:05 AM
I don't know, as I've looked through the posts it seems like most folk are either bitching about people, trying to look somehow superior (whether they are sneering at your grammar, comic collection or views) or just posting up some good old fashioned dumbass insults.

Sounds like yer average message board eh?  Who'd have figured?  I thought there would be more of a community vibe.  Oh well, heh heh heh, let the insults and smug opinions roll on down the road...

Website and Forum / Shorter thread titles please
13 December, 2001, 04:33:53 PM
The message board would be better if only the first subject line of a thread was visible and when you clicked on it the whole lot appeared, then you could easily view more of the threads.  I've seen it done on some post rooms.

Well, as people have complained about me reading JD in WHsmiths how about something that will get some money out of me.

The Citadel/Games Workshop RPG miniatures now go for a small bloody fortune.  I think that with a new Dredd RPG coming out next year, Rebellion should sell the licnese to the lead figures which would sell to rpg'ers and fans alike.

Games Workshop may no longer be interested but I'm sure someone else would.  Icon minaitures (previously Harlequin Miniatures) licensed the Dr Who figures and did a great job.  they also did Babylon 5 and Lord of the Rings (before GW) so obviously don't mind a bit of licensing action.

I'd buy them, and why stop there, Nemesis the warlock figures, Slaine figures, Rogue, Strontium, a Harry twenty Box set?  A great opportunity maybe.  I'd buy em'.

General / Mongoose RPG - News we've been waiting for!
10 December, 2001, 07:12:01 AM
I for one was pretty excited about the Mongoose Dredd RPG.  Having been a fan of the Games Workshop verison which had a truly dreadful system, but was otherwise fantastically well written and in the spirit of dredd at the time.  i.e. more fun that depressing.

It would be good if someone licensed the 28mm figures, I suspect it wouldn't be financially viable for Games Workshop to do it.  Mind you I've seen those figures go for truly stupid prices on e-bay.  The Citadel figures were pretty good.

I think it's just a shame that this wasn't done 10 years ago.  The rpg market is a lot smaller and while I don't want to be too pessimistic (I'll be buying it)I'm not sure how well it will do.  Perhaps a whole new bunch of people will give roleplaying a try, I hope so.

I'd also like to see the following RPG's...

A General 2000AD sourcebook that covered all those linked bits of history between dredd, nemesis, ABC warriors, Invasion & strontium dog.
Rogue Trooper
Strontium Dog
Zenith

Anyway it would be interesting to see what anyone else out there thinks.
