Off Topic / Forum Age
18 October, 2009, 05:47:14 AM
It may have been done before but lets just see what the forum age is. I'm reckoning it'll be mostly around the 35-45 age group but I might be proved wrong.
I'll start 42.

News / SFX Comic Heroes Special
13 October, 2009, 05:18:30 PM

I bought this about 3 weeks ago and it's took me this long to be bothered to type up anything about it. Why, because it's a bloody waste of money, that's why.

£7.99 and you got a couple of double sided posters, (I can't remember who was on them but I gave them away) some badges and a US comic (can't remember if it was DC or Marvel)
Anyway what did I get for my money. Well the cover was nice and shiny but the Dredd article inside was and I quote "This is an updated and extended version of a feature in SFX #148," FUCK KING HELL. What a bloody rip off. 5 pages and two of those are just pictures. In fact I would say the words just about cover 1 and a 1/4 pages, I was so annoyed that I didn't even bother to get #148 out to check what was new!

Anyway for all you others out there I'll put up the contents.

A-Z of comic book films & tv
Mark Millar & Stan Lee interview (from SFX #150)
Pheonix must die (backroom stuff about how it came about)
Superhero timeline
Bryan Hitch interview
Geoff Johns interview
Spiderman on tv
Origins of the Watchmen
Suprising comic cameos
Rubbish superheroes
Coming soon (over 80 movies in development or production)

Pop out and open it on the shelves now, please don't waste your money!

Off Topic / Cyclists, menace or not?
07 October, 2009, 12:28:26 AM
During the last few months I've noticed the cycling topic pop up a few times, admittedly I started a few of them.

Okay here we go!
I cycle with my son when we get a chance, as often as we can. He has autism so we go out on a tandem and we never cycle on the pavements. I always stop at red lights, even when I know and can see nothing is going to cross in front. I never weave about the traffic and when pulling up behind a stationary queue I don't crawl up the gutter just to get closer to the front.
I believe that rules of the road should be obeyed as they are there for 'everyones' safety.
The problem seems to be that quite a few cyclists and I include numerous adults in this just act like idiots and do what they like.
I drive through London quite a lot and see most acts of cycling stupidity there.
Now before we go on I'm not against cycling but I'm sick of the following things happening and here is a list of things I have seen.

1. Cyclists riding at night with no lights on the actual bike.
2. Riding through red lights and watching cars swerve to avoid them, horns sounding only for the cyclist to stick two fingers up!!!!
3. Riding through red lights and watching as cars crash, avoiding the sudden cyclist right in front of them. The cyclist then just cycles off leaving other people to sort out his mess.
4. I stop at a red light in the artic and see a cycle swerving around all the traffic behind me until he gets right in front of me and then he crawls away once the light goes green.
5. Similar to number 4 but the cyclist then tries to squeeze up the inside of me in the gutter, when there is no room for him. The lights turn green but I can't move as it's too dangerous, as he is only half way up the trailer.
6. Cyclists swerving around, between the gutter and central lines just for a laugh but causing traffic delays behind them.
7. Cyclists causing mayhem on the pavement as people are having to jump out of the way.
8. Whilst walking down the pavement I have had cyclists shout "move, out the way, Oi! Etc.." and they get nothing from me but abuse as I will not move out the way. I might if a child says something politely.

There are numerous other incidents but I'm sure you will recognise most of these things. Now I'm not saying that other road users don't do stupid things but most of them will have to stop and sort the carnage out whilst the cyclist (unless dead) just buggers off and there is no way of knowing who it was and getting some recourse.

As I have said, I cycle and am not against cyclists, just the idiots who do the above and just couldn't care less.
I'm sure if you went through a green light at about 30mph and a cyclist came across your path, through the red and died you might be upset.

Anyway I hereby officially open the debate......

After a comment I made on the 2000ad chat room last night about getting to Hi-Ex I have been thinking about it whilst I was at work last night. I was going to fly up from Kent and stay in a B&B but after mentioning it in the chat room how's about this idea-

I hire a minibus from Maidstone and drive up the country picking people up along the way until we reach Inverness. We would set off early on Friday and get up there Friday night at whatever time. We would start the return journey after it has all finished on Sunday night.

Now the price would all depend upon getting as many people to travel up as possible. This would make it a lot cheaper for everyone in these current times. I would like all to pay the same amount no matter how far up the country you live so it's fair for everyone.
Say for instance we hired a 7 seater  type van (or larger) and it cost £200 for 3 days and say the fuel was £300, then we would divide the £500 by 7 if it was full. So everyone would pay just over £70 which is not too bad.
Obviously this all depends on the amount of people who like the idea, the vehicle and the fuel and who knows we could try and get a deal on a B&B place for the group to stay at!

Anyway if anyone likes this idea get your name on here and I'll get in touch and we'll see how things evolve.

Ink! Alter Egos Exposed. (Sky Arts 1 , 19:30 today)

Hugh Dillon Asks why some comic-book characters have to die, as this most interesting new series on their creators continues.

Well this looks good, only noticed it as it was highlighted in the TV guide. I suppose no body knew about it because it's on Sky Arts.

Other Reviews / Best of Judge Dredd - by Prion
09 August, 2009, 12:49:55 PM

This arrived Saturday morning and what a strange mixture of stories it contains.
I think that the cover design is eye catching but on the back it has a few mistakes on what appears inside. Chopper, Judge Cal and Call-Me-Kenneth do not reside inside the tomb!

Anyway here are the contents:-

Thargs Introduction...............page 6
Meet Judge Dredd................page 8
Judge Dredd's Nightmares........page 13
Don Uggie.......................page 18
Firebug.........................page 24
The Cursed Earth (extract 1)....page 32
The Cursed Earth (extract 2)....page 48
Punks Rule......................page 63
The Return Of Rico!.............page 69
Vienna..........................page 75
Judge Dredd - Hyper-Cop!........page 81
The Judge Child.................page 88
Otto Sump's Ugly Clinic.........page 121
The Fink........................page 140
America.........................page 168
Mrs Gunderson,s Big Adventure...page 230
Bug.............................page 249
What I Did......................page 258
Origins.........................page 276 to 296
Then you have a few covers from progs 1505, 528, 538, 1561, 1340, 1345 & 1393.

Also to make things neat and tidy there are some covers spread about the stories.
Prog 160 on page 31
Prog 168 on page 47
Prog 164 on page 55
Prog 156 on page 87
Prog 161 on page 113
Prog 527 on page 153
Poster by Greg Staples of a grizzled Dredd (full face colour) on page 167
Prog 1348 on page 257

If you haven't got America you might as well buy this as the complete story is in and it only cost me £13.09 from the Depository Book Store.
Personally I think the contents should have actually had more of the BEST Dredd stories rather than a lot of filler.

Help! / Webcams!
04 July, 2009, 09:34:12 PM
Hello fellow worshippers at the House of Tharg.
I have been on skype the last 48 hours (not constantly I add) and I was wondering if anyone has any info on what would be the best Webcam to get. I have one already but I'm wondering if I should get a new one (mines over 2 years old) and obviously what type. Should I go for a seperate mic as well or stick with the combined version? Should I go for one with an earpiece etc?
All help will be gratefully accepted.

Links / Life size models
23 June, 2009, 03:06:21 AM
I just looked at this site and they do life size characters including Batman, Ironman, Superman, The Hulk, etc...
Now if they only did a Dredd I would be in heaven. I suppose I better put some money away just in case ;)

News / I don't want to believe it!
10 June, 2009, 04:54:11 AM
Having just skimmed through the Sun (shame on me, but it is early) I found an article on page 29 which has shocked me deeply (due to the content and who is involved).
One of 2000ad's artists is up in court on charges, now he's not been charged and I hope he's found innocent but he's in court nevertheless. I'm not going to go into the charges as you'll find out what they are when you search for the story.

I suppose this post can be deleated by the powers that be but the story is now out in the public domain and we are mostly all adults. If it doesn't get deleated then it might start a debate about the press and the releasing of names from court cases before any verdict is reached. As I said I hope this person is innocent but he could be forever tarnished even if he is.

News / Dan Abnett talks on YouTube
24 May, 2009, 02:39:08 AM
Dan Abnett has six video's (at the moment) of himself posted up on youtube where he's answering fans questions. There are a few mentions of 2000ad and I've linked the one where he mentions Sinister/Dexter. Once you've watched it why not have a look at the rest. I found it quite interesting, especially as I've really gotten into the 40K stuff in the last year.

Events / Bring back Dreddcon
22 April, 2009, 02:16:36 PM
Okay then I reckon everyone must have seen my letter by now in 2000ad when I mentioned at the end that we need another Dreddcon and Thargs asks what does everyone else think. Well that's it then we all need to mobilise ourselves and pester the green one to at least have a chance of seeing another one of these events happen.
I reckon that when anyone sends a letter/email to 2000ad or the Meg they must end with a P.S that says bring back the Dreddcon or words to that effect.
To anyone that's not been to a Dreddcon, let alone a comics convention, let me say they are great fun. I know it can be weird going to an event like this for the first time but I found everyone makes you feel very welcome. Not only will you be able to put faces to your fellow forum members but the main thing is you'll be able to spend some time chatting to your favourite droids and getting some sketches and items signed.

I'm sure you like me want to see this event back on the calander so get those fingers working and mention this to Tharg. By the way there is a facebook page dedicated to bringing it back.
//http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1363384292&ref=profile#/group.php?gid=39198931291&ref=ts

I hope we can do it but it does need us to want it in the first place, so come on lets be 'avin you.

Prog / Prog 1602- States of Fear
30 August, 2008, 06:32:02 AM
Great news for Buttonman, there are 6 letters in this prog.
Well that's all for now, except I don't like the way Kev Walker is drawing Dredd's badge without the name on it, the only quibble that I have with his art as I do like it. This was what made me write to DC when they did Dredd, their bods didn't put the name on the badge half the time

Prog / PROG 1599 - Blind Rage
08 August, 2008, 08:54:28 PM
Absolutely amazing prog! (in parts)

Even though we have two fillers with Bob Byrne (I think I shall have to read this one quite a few times to get it) and a Twisted Tale it's the main stays that move you this week. With what happens in Dredd I wonder if this could be a subtle turning point in Joe's belief in his ability to do the job without endangering others around him. He's questioned himself a few times in the past, but I feel this could be very personal as he just wasn't up to the job even though he was impaired.
As for Sinster/Dexter, it seems to just push us closer to the main event, ever more slowly.
Then we come to Dante
What a mindblowing few pages, I never in a million years expected Dante to skewer the Tsar like that and in front of his command staff. It then just gets more shocking as Dante gets fried and just as you think it can't get any worse he takes a boot to the head and it finishes with THE END, I'm sorry but this just can't be as it's too sudden and so horrible. Then again if it does end this way it will prove that 2000ad has got the balls to end a story in the least expected way.
Prog / PROG 1598 - Semi-Automatic for the People
02 August, 2008, 03:39:30 AM
The action cover of Dex shooting towards the reader with his grim determination showing is excellent, although it does seem strange not seeing a person sign it in there handwriting. Ben Oliver seems to have used a typed signature.

Dredd - Love the artwork on this, especially all the action stances. It helps to move the story along a treat.
Dante - More action from the man as he helps out and the Tsar shows us how to deal with your enemies, the effective way!
Defoe - As said by someone else this seems to have a gadget/set piece of the week and this week is no exception with La Voisin and her super reeks (nice double page spread). Saying that it doesn't distract from the story too much.
Terror Tales - Good take on the serial killer and knowing how people will die story. Can't say anymore or it'll give the game away!
Sin Dex - It's just moving along towards it's end game. I'm just waiting on the reveal why Dex can't shoot straight as I feel that will be a killer (well I hope so)

Anyone noticed how nearly all the main characters names begin with a D lately!

Okay I know some of you lot out there are as bad as me for collecting, so having found this I thought you had better know!
Prog 1589 comes in two covers, the first is the Defoe one which is advertised, but the second is the issue given away free with SFX no171 and with that you have to buy it from ASDA or you won't get it. This one has the X-ray Dredd head with the microchip tooth as the cover.
Okay infomercial ends now.........

Prog / Prog 1588: Close Encounters
24 May, 2008, 06:15:03 AM
Another striking cover for this prog. Dredd is standing on the justice eagle facing away from us aiming his Lawgiver at the spaceship hovering over the city. He's saying "Going somewhere Creeps?"
Anyway the prog just has the yhree strips in and it seems weird when we have these double episode strips inside.
I enjoyed the quirky Dredd story and even managed to enjoy the ending of The Ten Seconders as things fell into place.
But the ending to Dead Eyes just blew me away. I had to re-read the last page as I couldn't believe what I had just read or seen. Lets just say it was right out of the blue and I don't think anyone in their wildest ideas would have thought this might happen.
Well done John Smith
