Looks like Dog Deever
They model this on you, again John? I never knew you felt that way about Deever!
Pete Doherty on the art duties?
Cheers

That's who it looks like to me- Doherty, not Deever; though now you mention it... hmm...
CF and Deever up a tree,
K,I,S,S,I,N,G!!
Definitely Doherty, his line and his colour palette. Beautiful.
Sorry to disappoint, but it's not Peter Doherty. You'll just have to wait and see...
Interesting. So is this summat offical, then - ie; Prog or IDW?
I can think of a couple of artists that the style reminds me of, but i shant say, as im probably waaay off.
Could it be Guy Davis back for more?

Is it Ben Willsher?!
The shading on the leg looks like it's by Ben Willsher.
...just, like, sayin' like
something that's not about the FB comments...
Some of the comments on the Facebook are a bit much, but the picture was bound to incite a lot of remarks; as indeed it was designed to do.
Facebook is shit and I only use it for 2000 ad, and various other 'fan' pages.
And for the record I did leave a comment on the picture and it wasn't derogatory in any way; more of a humorous question (comedy ain't my strongpoint)
Sorry to go off topic!!!
Cheers :)

Dom Reardon or Ed Bagwell?

Dom Reardon or Ed Bagwell?
Dammit! Those were my guesses. Bagwell's more for the punk than the Dredd, the design of which is almost entirely different to his most recent Dredd work (1785). Love Bagwell's punks; their hairdos, glaikit expressions, and their anoraks. Hand coloured too, which doesn't fit Bagwell, and it's very different to what I remember of Kitsune's approach to painted art too.
Reardon, coloured by Doherty - hand cloured, instead of digital as he did on
Ichabod? Nice to see that, despite Dredd's obvious passion, his truncheon remains at the
'Mull of Kintyre' angle acceptable to UK censors
Ooh! Good call on Reardon! I thought earlier it had a touch of the McMahon's about it...
M.
Yeah, alot of the facebook comments are appauling. I just quoted my initial reaction. Sheer terror.
Now I look at it, this could be amazingly terrible, or terribly amazing. I look forward either way.
Just had a read of the Facebook stuff myself. Blimey, some people are even more mental than the loonies in the film threads here.
The colour's look a bit like that Yank that did one of the Mega City Masters covers but nothing else does really. I'll guess Carl Critchlow, although it's not liney enough, with someone else colouring in.
Asking the internet its opinion is a terrible idea?
Well I never!
edit: Looks a bit like whatsisname Pleece to me.
Bagwell was my first thought, too, but yeah, that Judge uniform is quite different to his take on Dredd in 'Tea For Two'.

I don't think anyone was asking.
Well, the intent in releasing this particular image was clearly to... cough... get a rise out of someone, I'm just saying we can hardly be surprised that opinion varies.
Mmm, its bugging me this. Every time i look im convinced its a particular artist, or the work of several.
I had thought, initially, it was Trevallion, or maybe Walker. Now bits remind me of Shaky Kane! Dunno - stumped.
Every new name that's suggested creates more doubt and confusion. I'm throwing Simon Fraser out there.
Dermot Power or Kev Walker?
Carl Critchlow?

The quality of the line's a little more delicate than you'd expect from the excellent Pleece.
The eagle and shoulder pad certainly have a definite Walker-ish quality to them. If those areas of shadow were filled with Kev's usual slabs of black... yes. A distinct possibility. Plus, Kev has a wicked sense of humour -- I could see something like that appealing to him.
Cheers
Jim

Is it by Karl Urban? Denise the subs droid? Damien Hirst? The ghost of Tony Hart?
Mick McMahon?
Did some of that gas from Lenny Zero story leak into the pages of Dredd ?
I think the artist is One of Us. I say that for no reason.
Kev Levell.
Tom of Finland?
Or, a more serious guess, Paul Grist?
Let's think about this a bit. The pose is a flip of the VJ Day Kiss picture - what could MC-1 possibly be celebrating that would make John Joe Dredd kiss Dog Deever? Rebuilding of the Statue of Justice? Too soon. A retaliatory strike against... who? Too pointless. But. What about the ABOLITION OF JUDICIAL CELIBACY?
My first guess was paul grist, or carl critchlow. Or paul-carl critchrist, who sounds like a pope.
Is it pj holden being inked by someone else?
As to the fb-homophobes, fuck 'em. They all just secretly want judge-cock up their umpty-bums anyway. Honestly, is there anything sadder than moaning because you fear someone posted a picture of a cartoon character kissing someone of the same sex? My friend anthony famously drew a picture of doomlord bumming dan dare just after the new eagle came out in the early 80s. He got told off by our art teacher- who happened to have been a 'finisher' and letterer for battle and commando picture libraries in an earlier life.

My first thought was Doherty, surprised it isn't him. Dredd looks a little chunkier than how Doherty normally draws him though.

Heh. It's a rite of passage and a crucial stage in any budding artist's development to draw porno versions of your kiddie favourites; my Rabelaisian version of
Oor Wullie was a big hit in the playground. Grist is good for the type of line and the nature of the figures, but the colouring would represent a throwback to a much earlier era of his work.
Molch-R's comment that we'll
never identify the artist leads me to follow
Dan in thinking it's someone outside comics. Derren Brown? Chris Cunningham? Alex Garland? Or what about folk you don't normally associate with this type of work: Bill Waterson, Angie Kincaid, Charles Vess? Grant Morrsion gave an interview to the
Daily Record around the time of the Stallone film where he claimed they'd ripped off his and Millar's Purgatory/Inferno stories, which was illustrated with a drawing he'd done of Dredd (copied from Bart Sears), and in which he claimed he'd have been a great artist if he'd just stuck at it.
I'd be amazed if it was me. Given I'm about as good at drawing as cheese is at impersonating Annie Lennox. Also I would have expected me to mention it to myself at some point.
Is it by the guy Mark who works at my local indie coffee shop?
Not sure if he can actually draw, but I'm going on the 'person you least suspect' principle here...

So, stepping away from the darker side of online fandom for a bit, I reckon the story this terrific cover (?) image relates to is part of Bachman's takeover plan - dividing her opponents by convincing Hershey that the loss of so many cadets means that in order to increase 'vocations' Justice Dept is going to have to open up its ranks to those uncomfortable with celibacy. People like DeMarco would be free to return to the force, and parents may be more inclined to submit their kids to the Academy knowing they have some prospect of happiness in their future.
Anyone know any Greek artists, apart from El Greco? They invented gayness.
Shame they didn't think to patent it. Could have helped solve their current financial woes.
It'd be difficult to assert copyright. Under the terms of Fair Use policy, the other party would be allowed to practise sodomy as long as it was for the purpose of commentary, criticism, satire or scholarship. In my experience, it almost always is.
It would certainly make Apple vs Samsung court battles more interesting.

I like the idea of Justice Department as a monastic order of government, but that would probably make dramatic sense for the strip's long term future. Well done on the VJ Day image spot earlier too; January's too soon for those two to be celebrating the restitution of democratic rule, surely? Powerful image of rapprochement.

So, are we any nearer to getting an offical answer as to what that image is all about?
It's a bit harsh to say posting this was trolling, poor molly... refusing to post an image would be worse surely, and no one can account for the actions of idiots. Yeah of course it was posted to be controversial and no surprise a lot of people were shocked, molly must admit he expected that, but no it isn't his fault there is so much hate in the world. It seems to have done its job and got a lot of intrigue and discussion - a crazy amount of comments actually - so he must be doing his job right!
In terms the story, I quite like a lighter Dredd piece in amongst the doom and gloom so looking forward to seeing how this unusual turn of events comes about. Also, always happy to see a bit of fan service for the gals wink wink nudge nudge hehe.

I thought it looked quite similar to the art in the current Dredd story too. Are we sure that's Dredd we're looking at and not the bent Judge? Remember the 1st page of the story where we all thought the judge going on duty was Dredd and it turned out to be another judge entirely?

I think that may simply exacerbate the issues they have with same-sex intimacy - using a sexual act someone finds questionable as a kind of threat is not a healthy way forward for any discussion.
We must engage with their opinions and hope that non-judgmental debate will help them to examine their positions so they can be re-evaluated in their own time, as one side of the argument suppressing opposing opinions with their own is arguably the problem rather than the solution.

Gay sells! Dunno if this a good thing or quite sad though...
Brills.
As far as I'm concerned, Dredd's sexuality is entirely irrelevant - which kind of makes this a fascinating talking point.
I think this is the exact sort of thing they were trying for - usually unsuccessfully - during the late nineties with B.L.A.I.R. 1/the Sex Issue etc - get people talking about the character.

Gay sells! Dunno if this a good thing or quite sad though...
As a means to an end (getting more people to pick up the Prog) its all good. I do think over all though its pretty damned sad that comics character's sexuality is still the stuff of papers these days. For Christ's sake (on irony intended) its 2012 shouldn't the press covering this have moved on on two fronts
1) Someone being gay, who cares being gay or not really shouldn't be an issue any more and I think (I think I might well be wrong) for the majority of people it no longer is?
2) The fact that a comic has a gay character, haven't we done the 'comics touching on 'adult' themes' thing by now. I mean really.
Still if it helps shift the prog I'll be a hypocrite, shrug me shoulders and say all good.
(I'm not saying that's why the stories there by the way, to attach attention. Not by any stretch, but that doesn't change the fact that it drawing attention doesn't half make me sigh.)
Shame that trivial topics KDPE rather than brilliant storylines that the Wagner droid hit us with time and time again.

Dredd's about 90. If the other chap is correctly described a "youth", then there should be more of an outcry that Dredd's been outed as a nonce.

Dredd's about 90.
What?! He's nearly pushing 70 but physically closer to 45/50.

For Christ's sake (on irony intended) its 2012 shouldn't the press covering this have moved on on two fronts
It's 2013 Grandad. Get with the plan ;)

It is pretty fucking sad, really. PJ Maybe became the secret Mayor of Mega-City One! The Dark Judges returned for the first time since the '90s! The Sovs wiped out 352 million out of 400 million cits! Truly gamechanging events in the world of one of Britian's premier comic action heroes and nobody could care any less, while Spiderman changing the colour of his uniform ::) is considered worthy of headlines.
Throw them a 5-page comedy one-off and suddenly they're falling over themselves to report because it's set in a gay club. Lord above.
Come on Jimbo, deep breaths, think of the kittens...

We need another team up with Devlin, or at the very least get Devlin back in his own strip again!

I hope he's a digital subscriber.
From the Guardian
"Steve Marchant, a tutor at the London-based Cartoon Museum, described the suggestion of Dredd being gay as a "major first".
But, he added, Dredd would not be the first superhero whose sexuality was the subject of speculation: the 1940s character Green Lantern "used to fight crime in a red blouse", he said.
"It's certainly the first time such an iconic character has been suggested as coming out and I think it's a bold, brave move and will give gay kids a good role model.""
Nothing says role model like a near genocidal, state-sanctioned, brutal fascist...
Also this story actually defining Dredd sexual preferences is basically nil.
Another reason, if one was ever needed, to never buy the Sun.

[Editor] shit, this is big news we need to talk to an expert!
[Hack] there's a cartoon museum next to Costa's on the high street
[Ed] OK, cartoons! They'll be experts.
[Hack] 2000AD has a forum should we ask the fans?
[Ed] Shit no! They'll just tell us the truth and what the hell do they know. They're not experts, fuck em go to the museum they'll be looking at comics and shit all day!
At comic museum...
[Hack] so Steven Marchant, you get around don't you? Teaching at this place and being on TV with Ricky. How is he by the way? What's his take on Dredd being gay? Is he here?

:o ooer missis!
Any chance a mod could merge the two threads on this topic?
It's not like there is a single panel of Dredd art in the cartoon museum, despite him being used on literature advertising it. I don't recall there being a single piece of 2000ad art for that matter. There was some Charley's War which was nice. Fuck the experts.

You will probably find some of these are self proclaimed experts.
If turning a room into a shrine of art and tat makes you an expert then CF is a master

I was in there a couple of weeks ago and there is some 2000ad art - I'm pretty sure there's at least one Dredd pic, but my attention was drawn to the Belardinelli Dan Dare double spread from prog 1 - lush!
It's a nice little museum, but pricey for the size

Any plans on getting CF to open the doors to the celler for a limited time only?
I've never been to this 'museum'. I'll have to give it a shot someday.

You wonder what they would all make of CROSSED if they saw what went on in that!
