Title: Forum’s Favourite Thrill - Kola Kommandos vs Harlem Heroes (Reboot) - Round 1 He
Post by: Colin YNWA on 03 November, 2021, 06:32:33 AM
We're into our second week of the tourney now - so our thrill-critique-drivers should be well and truly warmed up - what delights will we have to tease them this week? Well some are ... interesting... shall we say...

Look I love Space Spinner 2000, I really do but DON'T listen to them when it comes to Kola Kommandos, it's a great thrill, so go read it yourself... I mean with this draw you may have time before next round to!

Which most rattles your thrill-receptors:

Kola Kommandos - more info (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&choice=kola)

Vs.

Harlem Heroes (Reboot) - more info (https://shop.2000ad.com/series/story/harlem-heroes-1)

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Saturday 6th November and the winner gets a place in Round 2 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this? (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.0)

For those that need 'um and can be bothered to follow 'um there's some simple rules (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.msg1070150#msg1070150)

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Quaequam blarg what a choice! Kola Kommandoes had a great opening episode and a fairly interesting premise wrapped up in an impenetrable mess, with OK art. Harlem Heroes is just terrible derivative nonsense, but with gorgeous art. I think though I'm gonna be swayed by the second series of HH, in which Tharg was just trying to have as much fun with it as he possibly could, and kind of succeeded - right down to the insanity that is seeing Siku's paints on top of Kev Hopgood's layouts. WEIRD.

So yeah, somehow in this tourney I'm casting a vote for Harlem Heroes (reboot)!!

Yikes. Harlem Heroes started fairly well, despite obliterating links to the Dredd universe. But it went downhill rapidly and never recovered. It has some of the worst dialogue we've ever seen in 2000 AD. Nice art, but that can't save it.

Kola Kommandos was mediocre but that beats Harlem Heroes.

But again: yikes.

I don't feel any pressing need to re-read either of these to assist with my vote, which is for er... um... Kola Kommandos.

Kola Kommandos is an almost-formed gem, and I would definitely re-read it before HH.

The expressive early artwork of Anthony Williams also plays a factor here, as it did with Babe Race 2000 and Big Dave.

Although it's pretty pants, the early episodes especially of Harlem Heroes have some incredible work from Steve Dillon, atmospheric and violent and stunningly cool to teenage me.. Gets my vote on that basis alone.

Kola Kommandos was an oddly weird thing, with an interesting premise.

Oddly, having not read it, looked at it or thought about it since the original publication, I can remember several excellent panels but very little of the story itself (I think the same will be true when Dead Meat rolls around in this tourney).

I liked Kola Kommandos and still do - CT Hall's inner dialogue and the moon golf-course-cum-billboard were really nice touches.  Even the nice pictures couldn't save Harlem Heroes though.
Kola Kommandos.

That's not a world I want to live in! Kola Kommandos is a total mess, with too much going on and no clear plan, but too many ideas is better than none.

KK.

Stevie can't remember much about the actual story of Kola Kommandos.

But he certainly remembers the Harlem Heroes reboot.

Kola Kommandos it is.

VOTING CLOSED

We live in that world
We really live in that world.

With a late rally from Kola Kommandos (I quite like it!) I had this as a draw. And my casting vote was going to be for KK, by a mile. But that wasn't to be, I always count and recount close ties and I noticed I'd missed Maryanddavid's vote for HH and so....

We live in that world

Harlem Heroes (Reboot)

is into the 2nd round!!!

Its hard to call this a giant killing given the perspection of the defeated thrill. BUT DAMN this is a shock!

y'know, harlem heroes was both okay because of the wistful nostalgic hit of its moniker, and very far from okay when the comparisons with its illustrious namesake inevitably began ...
