General / Re: chat room
04 March, 2002, 03:22:32 AM
The problem is that there's no set time for the chat - what we need is to set a time.  Say for example, 10 o'clock Thursday night is chat night, so that people know when to turn up.  The only chat I happened upon on this site was good, but more often than not there's nobody about...

Also according to the back cover blurb, Pat is currently writing a new saga for Slaine.  After the Secret Commonwealth, methinks this will definitely be make or break time for the warped one.

The inking duties on one of the episodes of Slaine the King was not Anthony Williams, but Nik Williams, who did a lot of work for Games Workshop, a future shock or two, and an episode of Slaine for Diceman.

General / Titan books get it right....
28 February, 2002, 11:59:08 PM
Its sad I know, but the new intro to the Slaine hardback was enough to prise the money out of my hands.

In it, Pat reveals some interesting things - apparently the editorial team were unsure of Glenn Fabrys artistic ability as they felt he didnt have a grasp of anatomy!!!  Wonder what they would make of some of the artists during the 90s?  He also says that he had the chance to have two talented British artists working on Slaine, who had already made a name for themselves in the US.  However, he felt their styles were too American for the strip.  The only two names that fit this bill that I can think of are Bolland and Gibbons - anyone else got any idea/suggestions as to who these mystery artists were?

General / The future....

Prog 1289 is another relaunch issue (so soon after 1280 - when are we going to see a good long run that allows for some longer stories)  In it debut the long awaited Judge Death: "My Name is Death", 13, Dredd: "Sin City", Sinister Dexter and something else that escapes my memory at the moment.

In Megazine 11 we have the start of a full colour future war shocker (in place of WarDog?) - wonder what that's gonna be?

Yep, thats Garth, using the grand old irish tradition of being known by his middle name!  Loved the Millar droid, the sheep, "what the hell was I thinking?" - if only this wasnt from the droid who'd recently subjected us to Helter Skelter!

Help! / Re: Judge Child SPOILERS
27 February, 2002, 04:52:58 AM
I recommend you read the Judge Child saga to find out...however, if you cant wait -

Judge Lopez was a judge who, along with Hershey, accompanied Dredd on the  mission to find the Judge Child, who had been kidnapped by the Angel Gang.  The gang had then escaped into outer space.

In order to get a clue as to where they were, Dredd obtained a drop of oracle spice, which grants its user the ability to see things in an oracle stylee (hence the name).  However, Dredd was warned that it was potentially fatal.  Dredd chose Lopez to take the spice, as he was the most receptive and it proved to be the death of Lopez, hence his brooding in this weeks story.

Leaving Rowdy is classic understated Dredd as only Wagner knows how...

The Tharg story is telling - First of all you have Pat Mills being more interested in his non 2000AD characters, and sticking in another tedious pagan reference...

The story doesn't hang together as well as the Tharg Heads revisited tale from prog 500.  I feel this is indicative of 2000ADs biggest headache - getting some level of editorial control in the days of prima donna creators.  For example, the story has a number of the same characters appearing on different pages in conflicting situations.  It also has conflicting things to say about the past, present and future of 2000 - surely a better starting point would have been to shift Garths page nearer the start and had Tharg initially defending his thrill record during the 90's, but having been confronted by the evidence, realising his mistakes and THEN trashing Wireheads/Feleischer etc.

Maybe I'm expecting too much to have a narrative in a 10 page piss take, but IMO it would have been a good opportunity to lay the cards on the table and make a statement about the future direction of 2000.

General / DREDD: The final solution
22 February, 2002, 04:20:52 AM
I think most people have felt that Dredd goes into a lull when Wagners not writing it - In particular we've had to put up with some dodgy fill-ins from Ennis and Grant over the past year.

However, Gordon Rennie has proved he has what it takes to do good one parters - why not try him out on a multi-part Dredd?  Also, Scojo has reminded me how good Lenny Zero was - it really captured the spirit of Dredd and the Mega-City, like no other story I can recall that wasnt by the Mighty Wagner.  So why not draft in Diggle and Rennie as the regular stand-ins if possible...

Dredd could also do with a return to the glory days of a set of 4-5 regular artists doing the majority of the art chores - I'd nominate Colin Wilson, Cam Kennedy, Jock and Kev Walker as regulars.  I'm not sure how impractical this is in the modern world of comics, but it seems odd that so many new artists are tried out on Dredd - surely thats what Future Shocks are for?
