Its a shame there's not more information on the relative health of 2000ad at the minute. Creatively its certainly seems absolutely fine and with a blossoming trade programme I kinda felt that it was doing ok. The alternative view that House of U put forward and that certainly seems backed up my the Colin McNeil point is of course very possible. I don't think its in danger of being cancelled anytime soon but it'd be good to know it wasn't having to live hand to mouth so to speak or being bolstered by other revenue streams.

At the risk of being a hollow echo- that's cracking stuff right there, Jim.

I think when its that good just coming on to add to the praise is far from a hollow echo. That's pretty stunning stuff and the bar has well and truely been set!

Thank god for that I was having a hard time figuring out why I didn't understand what I was reading (being dyslexic is an arse)
My ability to type like the average monkey is a pain in the bum too!

That used to be a huge problem for both 2000ad and the Megazine. I don't think it happens at all any more, does it? I think, with times being as lean as they are, Tharg has to be quite discerning about the strips he commissions. Consequently they get commissioned in short, self-contained runs, and they see print quite promptly. You can't afford to spend the commissioning budget two years in advance and have a backlog of quickly outdated material cluttering up the drawers and have to turn down pitches from top talent because there's nothing to pay for them with.

Out of interest is this based on any specific information or is this supposition? I agree that there seems to be much more quality material in 2000ad (I can't speak for the Meg) but is this due to times being so hard or is it the fact that there are a lot of quality creators wanting to work for 2000ad?

I've stopped a number of times. The first couple of times are lost in the mists of time and were probably in fact my brother stopping as I'm sure it was his comic. Our parents let us get two comics each every week. Probably he wanted more Top Trumps or he started to get White Dwarf or summit?

I stopped around 1000 (after starting on 432) as it was getting delivered to my parents (on Merseyside) and I'd moved to Sheffield after going to Uni there and by that stage I'd all but stopped reading any comics anyway as I was enjoying the high life far too much. It seemed silly for them to continue getting it since I wasn't reading it anymore.

Now I will do all I can to not stop again as certainly the last two times I spend far too much time and money tracking down the issues I've missed and so I hope I've learnt my lesson and will continue getting it. I have a full set aside from the first 40 (oh one day, one day) and a couple of the early specials. Why spoil a good thing?

Seen a lot of time bombs recently in the SD stories...or is it just my bad memory?

And with the costs mentioned for them in this weeks Prog I do now wonder if Johnny carried out most of his cases at a lose!

did you mean loss?

In Progs 711 and 715 (i think) I got a letter and a picture printed, not sure which appeared in which issue , both asking for the return of Sam Slade. Tharg replied saying don't worry they're on their way. I was so excited... and well look what happened then!

So while I do defo want the return of the other Sam Slade the terrible memories my letters are associated with mean I surely can't get involved in another letter to Tharg on the same(ish) subject for fear of who might handle that return!

Just finished Paul Auster's New York Trilogy.

What the f**k was that all about, then?

I'm a big Paul Auster fan and while I have no doubt at all I don't get all the meanings etc I always find him an enjoyable read. Typically his books deal with indentity and effects chance and random events have on life... well that's my take but I'm certainly no expert!

Well I've read Book 1 again and have to say its exhilurating. Re-read in this improved format I'm once again reminded that its a story aimed perfectly to thrill and shock its audience. If I think its good now I can't imagine as a dinosaur obsessed child how fantastic and even radical I'd have found this.

The art on the whole is energtic and expressive and the story is paced almost immaculately when read in one go. The slow build of the siege is superb. I say almost as I've always wished that the the human headed dinosaur, too brillant an idea to leave out had been written in earlier as it kinda drags out the end and if they'd have had the conviction to kill
Earl Reagan
the story really should end on the line
"In her tiny brain was only the thought VICTORY!"
. With the wonderful epilogue episode left where it is. These are minor complaints however and it really does stand up well as a fine example of how to entertain children.

I read Book 2 not long again in the progs and while its fun I personally don't think its in the league of the first truely epic story

Bugger couldn't find the new Yo La Tengo album OR any Cud records in town this afternoon (I admit I didn't have very long and only looked in two shops). Sheffield lack of diversity in its town centre record shops is lamentable (and I avoid Jack's a lot of the time which I'm might have to stop even though its always been very pricey)
