Tricky. The characterization and story structure in Ten-Seconders is probably academically superior, but I didn't really get into it until the last series. The Helltrekkers, for all it's maudlin schmaltz hangs easily on the disaster-movie framing, and the core concept has become part of Dreddverse lore.

Or, to quote myself:

Although this tale, heavy on the melodrama, proved risible for a portion of the readership, the concept of Helltreks and radwagons became a staple motif of Dreddverse lore. Often seen in the background (in, say, Alabammy Blimps, and as the denouement of the modern classic The Heart Is a Lonely Klegg Hunter), or as the kernel of a wider investigation (as in The Raggedy Man and Ratfink), the concept was also used as the core structure for the Missionary Man fable The Promised Land.

Both stories for me held more promise than they delivered, almost veered to 10 2nders as i think it would make a great PRIME series... while HT would make a great TWD spin off.

Just throwing it out there that I'm really enjoying the prog at the moment - it's in the pipe, five by five - no damp squibs in the mix.

If I had to rank 'em, I'd do it like this, probably:

1. Brink
2. Intestinauts
3. Fiends
4. Hope
5. Judge Dredd

while I would flip that...but agree 5x5

-   Too generic

It reminds me of those stories when a famous writer is asked to 'do sci-fi' and then trots out the equivalent of 'stuck in a video game' troupe.

Elevator troupe pitch: Bladerunner meets Harry on the High Rock

He's a warning not an aspiration.

Best in the Prog; Grant Morrison.
Best outside the Prog; Garth Ennis.

I’d have to go for E-wing Droid. Get him alternating with Niemand on Dredd and bring some serious consistency to the world (with other writers chipping in as and when); and if he’s there “on a more permanent basis”, I’d love to see an original strip or two from him as well.

Welcome to the board / Re: Hi from Scotland
« on: 07 April, 2022, 12:56:25 PM »

Are there any meet ups now and again for fans in Scotland?

There's a well practiced formula:
1. pick a date well in advance, often around a convention
2. several people agree to meet
3. cancel one by one due to other commitments, until all agree to reschedule in a couple of months.

And welcome to the board!

This also works for Christmas, signings and barmitzvahs

Fiends tops it this week for me. Great art, great tale and those chicken footprints in the snow leading to the final page reveal was just perfect.

Events / Re: BHP Glasgow Comic Con 4 June drinkies?

Is this event good? I remember speaking to some of the BHP people at an Edinburgh Comic Art fest a few years ago and they seemed like a decent bunch. I'm tempted to head down if I'm around in June.

It can be a bit hit or miss TBH, but better that anything else on the go in Scotland now...

Bring back HiEx! I'm looking at you Rich!

Dredd top notch for me, Dan's rain and layouts are wonderful to behold.

Kingmaker ends with a return and a promise of more to come. Not doing anything for me, but never has, just not my thing.

Intestinauts good fun and a nice riff on the space adventure/fighty troupe

Fiends - loving the art and the story. Wonderful stuff.

Brink again needs to be read in the whole, but great stuff.

Prog has gone from nothing much I like to a lot, after 40 odd years reading you kinda get used to that!
