Life of a Cadet story - who wants it?

Just reading through this months 'The Great Thrill-Power Overload' in meg 4.14 and I thought the idea proposed for the cancelled fortnightly Dredd magazine about having a story based on the life of a Judge cadet was a great idea. Who agrees with me that this story (writen by Wagner of course) should be picked and introduced to the Meg.

I'd also like to see more stories (perhaps as one-offs) about other Judges. Some SJS stories or stories about Guthrie or perhaps some stories based on a team of more junior judges.

I'd certainly like to see more stories about other specialist judges. Ones like the 'One of our Simps is Missing' and 'A Tree Grows in Elia Kazan' are a good start as they at least introduces us to new areas (the POC Unit and more about the block/sector? councillors).
Even after the Apocalypse War, Necropolis etc the city has what was it? a population of over 200 million? There are a lot of areas that could be investigated that have never been touched before. These could be standalone stories, integrated with Dredd/Psi/Cadet/PSU etc stories.

moly

i totaly agree they should have them in the meg what about introducing new characters it worked with anderson psi what about cadet, sjs, hell even medic it might be interesting to see the other side,

Mudcrab

I'd agree with that completely. We could definitely do with more background stories on other judges. The likes of Guthrie, Buell, Demarco have all been well known since The Pit, and have appeared quite often, but they still seem like they could do with a bit more background.

How about having a series of one-off stories, not with Dredd, but with another judge, possibly to pad out the character a bit more before he/she makes an appearance, or to pad out an existing character. Obviously this IS done, hence Anderson, Janus, Armitage, Demarco etc over the years. BUT, how about the above, one-off, day to day stories for different judges. I could be a great way to introduce a whole new department prior to an 'epic'. Then again, that's what the Pit did to a certain extent. Well, we want more of that!!!

I personally like this idea Doug.  I want to see a major return of some of the Pit characters.  All have good potential.

Id like to see maybe a one of strip (series of strips) like for want of a better description "Hill Street Blues"  You know one day in the life of series(the same day).  One bustin heads, one med tech doing forensics, the psi judge, the wally judge, the sector cheif, the auxilliaries, the victims.  All involved in some way in one crime, an episode per character.  You get the idea.

Im not 100% sure it would work but it might give us an idea how the justice dept works and the politics therein, at a local level.

Mudcrab

Hmm, that's a good idea. Could possibly have the crime, with an arrest being made, making everyone think, how the hell'd they know? Then week by week it's revealed as the various judges involved have their stoies told. It's kind of a backwards idea, but I reckon Mr Wagner could make it work, given the right amount of twists and all that.

OR

same thing but having a page per character in each episode, working forwards. Alan Grant for this method.

OR

3 seemingly unrelated stories at once, some episodes with one character, some with all, some being told forwards, others backwards. Then the connection is made between all three, with a really confusing kind of loop reference with a hidden paradox, a touch of time travel, precognition and plain old fate. Who's writing this? Grant Morrison of course! (when's the next damn Invisibles GN coming out???). Or could be Michael Moorcock really. Similar thing to the Multiverse comics, although all 3 judges wouldn't end up being the same person, sort of.

Yeah thats it have the crime and the arrest in the first prog.  Then have the rest of the series How it affects the judges, internal conflicts between divisions, the citzs that sorta thing.  Filling in the blanks.

Doug we may be on a winner :-)

Smiley

I agree, it could be a winner. Definitely a candidate for the Megazine.

How about artists? Do you think it'd be good to have different artists for different judges, even in the same issue. Might put across different moods/motivations etc. I suppose the idea is a bit like Doomsday, but only superficially. I reckon it'd have to be all B&W, or all colour, doesn't matter too much, but picture a street judge by say, Colin Wilson, cutting to a seedy undercover judge done by Jock, then finally to a mad tek-division scene by Siku. (this is an example, by the way, I don't want to extend the SAC thread to this one). It looked good in the anniversary strip, and there've been plenty good strips in the past with many different artists. This happened by need rather than design in the past, but it shows that it could easily be done by design.

I'm liking this idea more and more now! There's probably a few characters that could be used well, Guthrie, Buell, even Demarco (although as I said, I'm thinking of Doomsday again). A few new one's could easily be used. OH!! That undercover female judge that was in a one-off about a year ago. That was a good intro, she should be used again (drawn by Gibson!!!!).

Id like a series.  With a diff artist for each episode, showing a diff side of the story.

Personall the openng episode by Irving, grizzly murder/crime right up his street.  The wally squad predictably by Jock.  Street Judge by Mcmahon.  Citz by Gibson???  etc....

Oddboy

Gory grim grotesque Med-Judge scene from Hickleton would be good.  All knives & blood.
Better set your phaser to stun.

Good, seems like there is strong support for stories in the Meg based on other Judges. It's always been my feeling that the Meg should have at least 2 MC-1 based stories per issue.

Let's hope the powers that be are paying attention and reading this thread. How about we all try and keep this thread going?

Wake, how about a poll?

Devons Daddy

this is a serioulsy great idea. just what we are ready for. dredds world has so much to offer. he only needs to be there at some point, the whole story less about him and more about the system or supporting characters, would allow some great characters to evolve.
also allows dredds  age concerns to take a back seat for a while.
WAKE any chance of a poll then?
I AM VERY BUSY!
PJ Maybe and I use the same dictionary, live with it.

NO 2000ad no life!

I also think a story set in one of the prisons or on Titan has some room in it. Maybe see how Klee and Jackson (the two Judges busted for corruption in 'Flippers' earlier this year in the Meg) are getting on now that they are on the other side of the law?
