Bummer. I had that one on order too. I noticed Harlem Heroes, Al's Baby and Stainless Steel Rat were all available for pre order (due summer 2010)
Can't wait for those ones.

Well they haven't sent me one, and I ordered it last week.

I wouldn't take it as gospel. I think it's an automatic message if you've had it on preorder for a while, and it's not there on the date of publication they've listed.

I  recently had the same message for a book saying it'd be delayed two weeks, giving an estimated date, but it arrived  two days later.

Rebellion publication dates tend to slip pretty often but usually not for very long.

The exception I can think of being Nikolai Dante: Amerika which was delayed massively for the brilliant reason that the episodes it reprinted hadn't been printed in the prog yet.  Fair enough really.

What a fantastic way to fuck with the heads of people who "wait for the trade", though!

it's not just a problem with amazon.

It's also currently listed as out of stock on Book Depository, Waterstones, Bookfellas, and Foyles

But at least now we have a cover image:

We also know if that cover image is right that its the stuff from the Annuals and Specials, not it would seem the Star strips, which I always suspected.

As best I can determine from that image, the credits read as follows:

John Wagner
Alan Grant
Steve Mooore

Carlos Ezquerra
Mike McMahon
Kevin O'Neil
Ian Gibson
Brian Bolland
Steve Dillon
Brett Ewins
Brendan McCarthy
Cliff Robinson
John Byrne

No Jose Casanovas, Robin Smith or David Jackson, at least on the cover, so it appears to take us up to the '84 special, and the 2k '83 annual (published in '82). It's difficult to determine how far into the Dredd annuals it goes with just those names.

Maybe Bolland's one page Walter stories will be included, The Alien Zoo from the '82 JD annnual, or just a pin-up or two.

I have to say, it was always touted as "annuals and specials" - hopefully when that stuff runs out they'll stuff the Star/Metro stuff into subsequent volumes.

Lets not forget the Ezquerra movie adaption (Ron Smith version as well) and the heavy metal dredds.
For the completest the DC Dredds.

There was some cracking stories in the specials which need to be included as the stories carried on in the prog later on. Without the specials Banzai Battalion wouldn't have come into fruition.

There's no completist who deserves to have the DC Dredds foisted on them as reward for their long-standing service.  No need to include the Heavy Metal Dredd stuff, it's just been collected.

Given the creators involved, I think not.

Agreed.  Also Garth Ennis DID write some nice Dredds, his story "A Magic Place" (I think) being the intermediary between the Annual/special story and Banzais.  There are plenty of others, but I'd say a reasonable proportion of this stuff is worthwhile.

I know the image is pretty low-res, but I'm sure that says it covers up to 2106 (which in real terms is, what, 1984?)

Volume 1 of the Casefiles seems to have some (but not all?) of the Bolland one page Walter stories.
Title: Re: JUDGE DREDD 0 delayed
Post by: CraveNoir on 19 February, 2010, 12:37:17 PM
I hestitated before exposing this level of geekiness, however...

The book is listed at running 320 pages, and as starfish says it goes up to 2106 (1984).

The purely Dredd strips from the 1977-1984 2000ad Specials, 1978-1984 2000ad Annuals, and 1981-1984 Judge Dredd Annuals amounts to 269 pages.

Anderson, Walter, Max Normal, Mean Machine strips amount to 49 pages.

So that could be what's being included.

Beyond that, there's around 100 pages of features, character data files and pin-ups from those publications. Text stories amount to another 25 pages.

I wouldn't be suprised to see the Anderson and/or Mean strips passed over for some other stuff as they could be reprinted elsewhere, but I think it'd be a shame to miss out the strip/feature which introduced Sladek and the Knee-Pad Kid. We shall see soon enough.

Quote...it'd be a shame to miss out the strip/feature which introduced Sladek and the Knee-Pad Kid.

Yeah, The Fallucci Tape itself is a great story, and it'd be a shame to miss out on the original text piece - a rare slice of Cits-Eye-View on the city and its ways.

Gotta say, I'm really excited for this now.

Post by: John Caliber on 20 February, 2010, 10:39:01 AM
I got my copy this morning. Dok! WHAT A COLLECTION!

It's a relatively slim volume, but it is heavy so I knew it had to feature gloss paper, which means colour content. There is a surprisingly huge selection of stories inside, all one-shots from various early annuals, Sci-Fi Specials (and even the John Byrne 'Block Out' future sport story). The sub-heading on the front cover reads: "2000AD Annuals & Specials, Year: 2099 -2106"

Reproduction is generally good. Oddly, some of the reprints seem to be heavy on the black ink, but the text in the speech balloons looks sharp.

I have 90% of the stories already, but this compendium does away with the need for digging out the odd anuual or tatty Sci-Fi Special from a moutain of yellow progs.

9/10!

If I'm not misremembering it's a text piece in the '84 Dredd Annual, with art from (IIRC) Robin Smith, intoducing Herman Sherman, aka the Kneepad Kid, who goes on to blackmail Judge Sladek (he had a 'tache - Titan was his destiny).

Yes, Grant, that very story (one of my favourites) features in Vol 01, along with all the other Dredd-centric stories from that annual.

The Kneepad Kid doesn't appear, as he's not technically part of a comic strip.

There are no text-based reprints, sadly, nor the other annual backup stories (Max Normal, Angel Gang, etc)--be nice to see them in a From The Pages of Judge Dredd series.

Dr Panic was also in Case Files 03

So that's every Dredd up to the '84 specials, and the '85 annuals. Ryan's Revenge, and Christmas Party are from the Dan Dare Annuals.

This is such a no brainer - admittesdly itsd watered down a bit by those early odd specials tales, but the Annual stories from 80-84 are pretty much the peak of Dredd, and now all together!

Now that I think about it, that 1982 Judge Dredd Annual was the point at which I really 'got' McMahon -- I remember just reading and re-reading those three colour stories and being utterly blown away. He's done stuff I'd really liked prior to that, but he'd never been on my list of 2000AD artists I wanted to draw like until then.

Cheers!

Absolutely; the 1982 Judge Dredd Annual was my favourite 2000AD product of all time (until The Restricted Files V1 came out).

I have never ceased to be obsessed with McMahon's colour art for that title. The stories are not so wonderful, but he makes them magic. He really brought the streets of MC1 to life, and his patchwork-style detailing and colouring of the cityblocks makes them almost desirable to live in. For me it's artistic lightning in a bottle: I don't think McMahon ever drew as well before or since.

After the momentous Volume 1, the others can only suffer in comparison. The quality of the Annuals and Sci-Fi Special strips really begins to drop off in short order from now on.

Of course, reprinting all the Daily Star Dredds by Wagner/Grant/Smith/Gibson would help bring the Thrill-Power Index right back up, although their landscape format might be too great a jolt for The Restricted Files, so maybe an entirely separate reprint series is indicated.

If there was only to be one collection of 2000AD art I could see reprinted, it would have to be the original Bolland art for the 1980s Eagle Comics reprints in their original b/w format on high quality paper, but I was informed some time ago they were very difficult to locate.

Restricted Files 1 is fantastic - proper undiluted thrill-power! Totally exceeded my expectations - if anyone is unsure about buying it, then rest assured it's drokking ace.  I love the cover design, too (different to pics used online).

The £19.99 price tag is a bit rude, but Amazon is selling it for £11.18.  Woo-hoo!  :P

Anyone know if Restricted Files are likely to run to more than two volumes?

Whoa, blast from the past! Even when I had no idea who wrote what (it was years before I found out Howard, Grover and Wagner were the same person!) I do remember the annual stories were always a bit ... odd. I remember Dr Panic and Mega Miami ('Super villains' and 'Dredd on holiday') weren't exactly classics.

So it's arrived, and it's pretty great. Lots of "Ah! I remember that one!" moments for me.  - really for something that by rights should be a bunch of off-cuts and oddities it's actually got some really classic stories, and the colour McMahon artwork in particular is amazing.

After gorging myself on the prog and the meg I set about it like a demented thrillsucker.
Supoib stuff. Brings back all sorts of memories of reading the specials on a beach in the Isle of Wight.
Which I could have done anyway, having all the specials in a box somewhere, but this volume allows for my sheer laziness and puts them at arm's reach.
Top stuff!

I'd suggest that Mega-Miami was Wagner and/or Grant - the robots' accents are reminiscent of what you get in Robo-Hunter.

I've suggested this before, but can anyone else see Ryan's Revenge as a Rico Dredd story, rather than a Joe Dredd?

Regards

Robin

Don't think so, I remember Wagner and Grant complaining about other writers and artists and their versions of Mega City's size, particularly that someone had written a story that extended Mega City One down to Florida which they didn't like so "the Apocalypse War" was a response to the Meg's runaway perimeters and forced a definition on the subject.

Whatever you want to believe Robin, we don't mind.

Well, it's just an alternative to the reality that it's just a pretty naff early story with a depiction of Dredd that makes Mark Millar's efforts almost Wagnerian.

That's "Wagnerian" pronounced as it's written, eh?

Dropped a book token on this bad boy today, when I should have been working.  Wow, it really is a cool collection, and worth ever penny.  That monstrous Rogue Trooper phonebook and second Ace Trucking casefile looked bloody tempting too, but I'm holding out for the second Robohunter volume.

Tharg has set up a drip from my bank account to his.

I really don't mind though, 98% of the time the stuff is so well produced it's not something I can begrudge.

To all those folks who wanted a Mike McMahon Dredd collection (I think you were among them Jim) - this is the closest you're going to get - at least for now.

Amazing stuff.

Got mine today (thank you oh settlement incentive)and have to say this is easily the best collection to date. I'd read most of it before but it was great to see them altogether and the reproductions are great. Some real top notch efforts from Bolland, Carlos and McMahon - even our old compadre John Byrne garners pass marks!
