Title: Misheard lyrics
Post by: JayzusB.Christ on 04 July, 2014, 11:03:42 AM
Thanks to Google, I've realised what a fool I've been all my life.

The Pixies' 'Debaser' says 'Got me a movie... girlie so groovy', not 'Got me moving... girl you're so groovy.'  (Forunately I realised it was 'slicing up eyeballs' rather than 'marbles' when I realised it was about a Dali film).
Also, the screaming and yelping in 'Vamos' is just Black Francis saying 'let's go and play on the beach' in Spanish.

The Inspiral Carpets' 'Sackville' says 'where little boys meet little girls', not 'where you stood 40 years ago.'  It seems a bit of a jump, but seriously, listen to it.

Lots more where that came from, as soon as I remember them.

I used to wonder why Bob Marley sang about "a roof-rack over our head".

And there's the old chestnut of course, Jimi Hendrix singing "Excuse me while I kiss this guy"

Also "Ohhhhh- wo-wo, my ear's are alight!" ("Israelites"). Which I confess, since reading years ago, I have not been able to unhear every time the song is on.

Famously I used to be convinced "Three lions on a shirt/ Jules Rimet still gleaming" was "Three lions on a shirt/ Shilton's face still gleaming", until my mistake was pointed out by a football-mad and highly amused friend.

Not music, but I still can't watch that clip from Dr Who's 'Dalek Invasion of Earth' story, without hearing the titular metal meanies chant "We are the bastards of Earth! WE are the BASTARDS of Earth!".

There is even a database named after it

My favourite was when someone in school was adamant the words were 'don't cry for me aunty Tina'

Someone on a forum I used to frequent was astonished when I told them the Velvet Underground weren't singing about "tiny, tiny, tiny boots of leather..."*

Cheers

Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, Put your hands all over my body (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vOUKVZZ8_w).

When I was just a slip of a girl, one of our weekend haunts was a dreadful, smalltown Scottish rock club which could be relied upon to play exactly the same songs every week. Even with the repetition, this wasn't so much misheard as simply incomprehensible: Hey little thing, let me light your catapult 'cos mama I'm sure the handle, it spins around (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtLbE3IUY2U)!

NB May not actually have been this version.

Famously I used to be convinced "Three lions on a shirt..."

And I have to admit, I thought until now it said 'three lions on the shore'.  Dear me

I remember someone writing into a radio show that they used to mishear 'It's so funny' as a reference to a lady's mammaries and genital area.

if your bored and listening to the radio, cheer yourself up by singing along but insert the word pants instead of heart or lurve, if you're really wanting to push the boat out substitute the tear/tears with pish

I used to think that bit in Bohemian Rhapsody went "Beelzebub has a devil for a sideboard, me".

Also, this is more mishearing on purpose, but it used to fascinate me that if you hear this theme tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYa_NfrxCng), and listen for the word 'poo' instead of 'clue', that's what it'll sound like every single time. Listen for them singing 'clue' again, and that is what you'll hear.

It's like an audio version of wave-particle duality or something.

"Onion-y un-loneliness" from Manic Street Preachers' Motorcycle Emptiness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=gavcjNniIvk#t=64), because radio speakers were rubbish in the olden days. No - I don't know what I imagined it meant either. A variation on this - didn't witness this myself, but I'm reliably informed that at a football match in the early 90s, Reading fans (not sure if home or away) chanted "Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, Rub your beard all over my body". Genius.

I used to think the Pet Shop Boys "Left To My Own Devices" contained the line "For in a secret life I was a randy general". It's Roundhead, not randy which probably says something about my filthy mind.

Not my story but here is one told to me...

A bunch of friends were in the pub when It's Raining Men came on the jukebox and one girl said 'I just don't get what all the fuss is about with this song'. 'What do you mean? What fuss?' she was asked and the reply was 'This song - Israeli men. What's so special about Israeli men?' she asked in all honesty.

This was once a topic of conversation when I was at school.

One kid said his mother thought Jona Lewie was singing:
"You'll always find me in the kitchen at Barney's" (parties).

Another kid said that 'So lonely' by the Police came on the radio and his mother said:
"Isn't it nice they made a song about Sue Lawley."

You can guess how the lyrics go...

A mondegreen is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning.
Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song;
the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar, and make some kind of sense.[1][2]
American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in her essay "The Death of Lady Mondegreen",
published in Harper's Magazine in November 1954.
The term was inspired by "...and Lady Mondegreen", a misinterpretation of the line
"...and laid him on the green" from the Scottish ballad "The Bonnie Earl O' Moray".[3]
An unintentionally incorrect use of similar-sounding words or phrases in speaking is a malapropism.
If there is a connection in meaning, it can be called an eggcorn.
If a person stubbornly sticks to a mispronunciation after being corrected,
that person has committed a mumpsimus.[12]

Linked Horizons glorious Guren No Yumiya opening yarn often is deliberatly mistranslated as from...

"Nein, wir sind der Jaiger!"

Meaning

"No! We are the hunters!"

To

"Having sex with the bees and the eagles!"

I don't know the song as I'm not a fan.

It's from sidewinder sleeps tonight, and I always heard it as "coming in to Bakersfield".

I discussed it  a while back with a REM fan and it's actually "Call me when you try to wake her up", but at least one syllable is completely swallowed. Now that I know, I can hear it.

If you listen closely to that song, even Michael Stipe stumbles at one point (just after the Dr Seuss line) and you can hear him almost crack up.

Wasn't there a thing where Stipe deliberately mumbled or under-ennunciated lyrics to create enigmatic sound-poems, hiding the fact that the lyrics didn't actually make any sense? Not that I have a problem with that approach personally, allows you to read what you want into things.

Sometimes never! It's far more conducive to the listening experience to treat the vocals as another instrument in the overall sound (I don't find not speaking German an impediment to enjoying Rammstein, for example). FotN have never been big on publishing lyrics -- Elizium is their only album with a full set of lyrics, and I think the impenetrability of the vocals is part of the charm.

Almost all the online versions of the lyrics are flawed transcriptions by a listener but occasionally something emerges that sheds a bit of light -- there's a hand-written (by Carl) copy of the lyrics floating around that reveals that that refrain of 'Moonchild' is "LURE me down", and not "LOWER me down, as every lyric transcription everywhere has it...

Oh my goth! After all these years I've been singing "lower me down" - for the very fact I couldn't source official lyrics.

I also messed up what I heard in the verse: "Take your horses / Let them crawl / Put them in their cages / That's righteous for your soul"

Ha. I wouldn't! I suspect one of the reasons 'Last Exit' is such a live favourite is because it's the only track on The Nephilim with a full set of lyrics buried in the album design and is the only song everyone knows the words to! It was years before I got 'Psychonaut's "Sweet nectar, for a thousand young..."

*Minus the 'bonus' track, 'Shiva', obviously, whose inclusion I consider an act of musical vandalism on what is otherwise one of the all-time, capital-G, Great rock albums.

Outkast: "Hey Ya"

Actual lyrics:
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it like a Polaroid picture, shake it, shake it

What I heard:
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it like a polar bear ninja, shake it, shake it

Title: Re: Misheard lyrics

Not sure.  But it does sound a lot more Morrissey-esque than 'country boy', which he himself clearly is not.

Wonder if Grant Morrison knows this?  (Even though he's since retconned his younger self to be a loud, anarchic punk rather than the fey, quiff-sporting aesthete I seem to remember.)

I'd assume that a pantry boy is somebody whose main job is to move stuff to and from a pantry, (an insult because it doesn't take much skill to do).

I'd also assume that the pantry in question must be a hell o' a lot bigger than the one we had in our house when I was wee.

For years and years I thought the chorus was "She's so obvious" and one day whilst on you tube I thought I would have a sing-a-long as you do and pulled up the lyrics.  It appear what I thought was the above is actually "Jeux sans frontieres"

Ahead of going to Def Leppard next week, I have been listening to some of their stuff and it has become apparent I have been mishearing loads of their lyrics for years. Most notably from "Pour Some Sugar on Me" I always thought one of the lines was:

"living like a lover in a Renault 4"

when apparently it is

"livin' like a lover with a radar phone".

Now I have no clue what a "radar phone" is.

Frankly I think my version makes more sense....

A friend of mine, who moved to Greece when he was 13, used to insist that Def Leppard song was a metaphor for getting covered in dust on a building site.

I met him a few years ago for the first time since then, and reminded him of it. He hadn't changed his mind.

You know, Joe Elliott has lived in Dublin for decades and he's about the only Dublin-based celebrity I've never seen (Dublin's small, see, not like That London).  I can only surmise that the fecker's hiding from me.

I saw Jedward on the bus home once before they were famous (you don't forget a pair like that); they were chatting to the female halves of some teenage couples.  After they left, there followed a synchronicity of protective motherly compliments and muttered homophobic insults from the girls and boys respectively, just as surely as night follows day.

That's what I figured too.  They were ok in the 80s, in a cheesy, soft-metal way.  It all started to go wrong with 'Let's Get Rocked' though.

I certainly split their career into 2: upto and including Hysteria and then everything afterwards.

The first couple of albums were pretty much raw (in a good way) heavy metal. Then came Pyromania which I think of as a first draft of Hysteria. Then it all came together perfectly on Hysteria, which I view as the perfect fusion of metal and pop.

The biggest problem with Adrenalize is that it isn't Hysteria. It actually sounds pretty similar and has some really catchy songs, but it's just not as good. How could it be?

After that the metal gives way to pop even more, not that there is anything wrong with pop, but that's not what I want from Def Leppard.

Seeing as it's the Misheard lyrics thread AND you've mentioned the song "Let's Get Rocked" - I hate that song despite Def Leppard being a guilt pleasure of mine - my little sister swore Joe was singing "Lesbian's Rock!"

The original line was 'most of these men snort cocaine', I believe, before they were forced to change it.

EDIT: Feckin crikey, I've just discovered that I've had the lyrics wrong the whole time too - even wronger than Sheridan in fact. Until 3 minutes ago I'd thought it was 'most of these men sink like subs' 😳
