Film & TV / The Walking Dead Season 10
« on: 17 October, 2019, 09:35:24 AM »
Didn't see a thread for this, which seems unusual!

Only a couple of episodes in but the latter half of season 9 went a long way to bringing me back on board and I have to say TWD has gone from something I was finding a bit of a slog to something I actively enjoy putting on again.

It did make the mistake that the show seems to make quite often though, coming back after a break and starting with a bit of momentum and then hobbling itself a little by immediately making episode 2 a flashback episode. It didn't bother me personally but seeing as a common complaint is that long stretches go by without the story progressing it always surprises me to see them playing for time a little so early in a season.

Saying that I did enjoy episode 2, and it had some good Alpha/Beta stuff. So I'm currently more enthusiastic for the show than I have been in a long time, hopefully that continues!

Games / Save Point X Charity Games Marathon!
« on: 11 October, 2019, 09:16:03 AM »
I thought I'd already spammed about this but looks like it slipped my mind!

I'm doing the 24hr game marathon again this year for Edinburgh Children's Hospital, so will add the links to get info/donate and also the link to watch my (usually very boring - it's just me on a bean bag eating biscuits in silence and occasionally swearing at difficult bits mainly) stream.

This year I'm going with a horror theme (again) and going to dip into the shame pile. Main objective is to play through Resident Evil: Code Veronica X in it's entirety and beat the dang thing, I started it way back in the day and never got very far so hoping to finally batter through that.

If you have a quid to throw in the bucket, please do :)

Film Discussion / Drokk Vinyl
« on: 20 May, 2019, 11:52:42 AM »
For anyone interested, Drokk (the original DREDD score Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury were working on before they were replaced with Paul Leonard-Morgan's score) has been reissued on vinyl and it's very nice -

I love the music that wound up in the film but it's still quite fascinating to imagine it with a different soundtrack. They went on to do Alex Garland's other movies (the Annihilation album is another one I had to get on vinyl!) so wonder if they were his choice originally and he got over-ruled or something.

At any rate it's a pretty nice piece of collectible Dredd history I guess.

Help! / Advice on getting rid of old 2000AD comics
« on: 05 March, 2019, 12:12:06 PM »
Hi all, I'm considering the unthinkable and looking into maybe getting rid of my boxes of progs and Megazines, and wondered if anyone has any experience or advice.

I hate to do it but space is becoming an issue so the idea of replacing them with digital copies feels really appealing! For that reason I might keep the ones that aren't available digital, doesn't seem like the digital store necessarily has everything and I don't know if they've stopped adding old years to it now.

I'd thought about finding a shop that might buy them as a collection but I can't seem to find anywhere that does that in Glasgow, and as a collection it's a bit scattershot and there are a lot of annoying gaps where issues seem to have been lost, so I don't know how feasible it is to list them on ebay or the like.

Has anyone done similar and have any tips?

This is what I have -

Games / Sick Kids Save Point Sci-Fi Games Marathon 2018!
« on: 10 October, 2018, 11:26:12 AM »
I post about this every year so apologies for the deja vu!

This weekend I'll be taking part in Sick Kids Save Point, a gaming marathon to raise money for Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity.

I'll be starting on Saturday morning and doing up to 36hrs (I've been adding an hour for every £10 raised and am sitting at 29hrs currently!) and this year I'll only be playing sci-fi games. Aiming to beat some unplayed games from the pile of shame and also do full runs on some classics (Halo 1, Dead Space 2, Dark Void because my mate made that a condition of his donation!), and streaming the whole thing to prove I haven't fallen asleep.

If you do wish to donate or learn more about the charity my page is here - https://sp18.everydayhero.com/uk/keith-s-sick-kids-save-point-2018

And I'll be streaming on Mixer all weeked - https://mixer.com/Superbeasto

Got a good chunk of space-based games to dip into so should at least be a fun if incredibly tiring ordeal, cheers!

Games / Sick Kids Save Point 2017 Game Marathon!
« on: 28 September, 2017, 12:10:24 PM »
Hello! Little bit of spam here, but I'm doing another charity games marathon soon for Sick Kids Save Point (to raise money for the Edinburgh Children's Hospital) so thought I'd share the link!

It's starting Friday 13th October, runs for 24hrs+ (I'll add an hour for every tenner we can raise over my target, up to a maximum of 36hrs - last year I wound up doing 36hrs and it was rooooough!), and I'm aiming to do beat Flashback, Prince of Persia, Condemned and Portal, plus play a whole lot of The Evil Within 2 and anything else I can dig up to fill the time. There's a chance I could just get stuck on one of those old games for several hours (like the year I embarrasingly botched a Resident Evil playthrough...it still hurts) but will hopefully get through them!

My page is at https://sksp17.everydayhero.com/uk/keith-thorburn

You can get info and sign up to take part at https://sickkidssavepoint.com/

And I'll livestream my attempt here to prove I've not nodded off - https://mixer.com/Superbeasto

Help! / Help Finding Future Shock! Space Graffiti?
« on: 24 May, 2016, 04:04:28 PM »
Hello Hivemind!

Wondering if anyone can recall a Future Shock where someone made an epic journey in a spaceship and the final reveal was some graffiti (something along the lines of so and so 'Was Here')?

A colleague is trying to hunt it down and it rings a bell but I can't remember any more details!

Games / I'm Doing The Sick Kids Save Point Game Marathon!
« on: 28 August, 2015, 11:50:04 AM »
Hey everyone,

Just spreading the word that I'm once again doing the game marathon for Sick Kids Edinburgh on 10th October in case anyone wants to throw a couple of quid in the pot!

It's a 24hr game marathon, but this year I'm going to add an hour for every tenner over my target I can raise (up to a maximum of 36hrs, because I still have to work Monday unfortunately!)

I'll be streaming the whole thing, playing some classics and the scariest horror games I can get my hands on so should be a bit of a laugh really. Cheers!

Just in case anyone doesn't know (I just stumbled on it today and bought tickets). Haven't seen it yet so good news.

Books & Comics / Warhammer 40k Novels, Where To Start?
« on: 07 May, 2015, 04:32:47 PM »
Picked up the recent Warhammer 40,000 game (Assassinorum) and while reading through the rule book and poring over the characters and models it struck me how much I've always enjoyed that part of their games (I used to play Space Crusade and Space Hulk as a kid and thought artwork and the universe was really cool and a huge part of what made the games fun), but that I never really dived into the lore beyond what was presented in the games.

Has anyone read a lot of them who could recommend a good place to start without being completely lost? Had a look for novels on Amazon but even using the wiki page I found it tricky to figure out how everything is laid out! Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Slightly spammy (but for a good cause!) -

Every year I take part in the Sick Kids Save Point, where a whole bunch of folk play games for a ludicrously long time to raise money for http://www.edinburghsickkids.org/.

This year I'm doing 24hrs but I'll raise it to 36hrs by adding an hour for every tenner over my goal I can raise.

You can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/Keith-Thorburn3
And watch the my livestream at http://www.twitch.tv/superbeasto81 (it won't be very entertaining because I'm neither an entertaining person or particularly good at games, but it's proof I haven't fallen asleep on the job or anything!)

Rough schedule is -

9am - 12pm: Shadow Of Mordor
12pm - 1pm: Kinect Sports Rivals
1pm - 4pm: Another World (full playthrough hopefully, if I don't get stuck...)
4pm - 6pm: D4 Dark Dreams Don't Die
6pm - 7pm: Kinect Sports Rivals
7pm - 8pm: Sniper Elite III Hunt The Grey Wolf
8pm (or as soon as it's dark enough) - 1am: Alien Isolation
1am - 2am: Need For Speed Rivals
2am - 4am: Alien Isolation
4am - 7am: Metro 2033
7am - 8am: Kinect Sports Rivals
8am - 9am: Titanfall (come join in!)
9am onwards anything goes really. I'll probably be terrible at anything by that point anyway.

Film & TV / Pacific Rim 2!

This has made me deliriously happy today. And an animated series! This is what all Fridays should be like.

Music / Best Cover Versions
« on: 12 May, 2014, 03:56:53 PM »
We've got the butchered songs thread so seems only fair to have one of these!

I'll get the ball rolling with this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dunKAwRN3P8

It's a pretty revered song and quite a dramatic re-tooling so probably won't appeal to all, but in terms of taking a song I've never been all that fussed about and making it something I really like it's probably one of the most successful covers I've heard. MJK's voice has a lot to do with it of course, he is silk to the ears.

Books & Comics / Humble Image Comics Bundle
« on: 01 May, 2014, 09:21:02 AM »

Couldn't see a thread about this but it's a pretty cracking deal.

Humble Bundle (they do a 'pay what you want' deal on batches of videogames and ebooks with a portion of the money going to charities, have gotten some crazily good bundles from them in the past) have an Image Comics bundle up at the moment.

You can pay whatever you like to get the first volumes of East of West, Fatale, Lazarus and Morning Glories, if you pay above the average donation (currently about $9) you also get Saga, Revival and Chew, and if you pay $15 or more you also get Volumes 1 and 20 (?) of The Walking Dead.

TWD aside I haven't read any of those books, and as it happens Volume 20 was the next TWD on my list. Really cool way to try out some new stuff for me, and for a good cause!

Classifieds / Doctor Who Art for sale (and for charity!)
« on: 07 March, 2014, 01:36:54 PM »
Just putting this here as it's for a good cause and is the last day of auction, one of the artists at work is auctioning off this Tom Baker piece for Cancer Research UK.

It's bloody lovely and seemed like the sort of thing you lot would be interested in:
