Film & TV / Rubber
19 January, 2011, 08:49:48 PM
So, right, it's about this tire that comes to life, and, uh, kills people? And it's by the guy who directed the Flat Eric videos....

Now, can we get a double bill of this and Hobo With A Shotgun?

Film & TV / Dredd movie plot review
20 July, 2010, 10:48:03 PM
Aintitcool has a brief review of the plot for the Dredd film. It could be considered spoilerish, but probably not much more than the back of a DVD case. Still, you decide if you want to click....

If you don't, two interesting points; it uses the phrase "Imagine DIE HARD taking place within the world of BLADE RUNNER" , and Anderson is in it.

Film & TV / Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
25 November, 2009, 10:13:12 AM
I watched this last night and unfortunately it comes off more like a cheap cash-in then anything else. There are some decent bits, like showing the initial Cylon attack in much more detail, but for the most part it comes across like a clip show, showing scenes from old episodes and using them to tell the same story only from the Cylons point of view. And even that doesn't really tell us anything new (apparently the plan was to destroy all humans. MMMMkay...). In fact, by suggesting that Cavil was the man in charge all along, it kinda takes the edge off the Cylons who always seemed to act as a group.

I'd suggest giving it a miss even if you're a fan.

Film & TV / Watchmen: Which DVD?
20 November, 2009, 10:44:54 AM
Okay, so I've waited this long without buying Watchmen because of all the talk of various different cuts and box sets and so forth. So now there's the original, the director's cut and most recently the Ultimate Cut, which has the Black Freighter spliced into the Director's Cut, and depending on what you read possibily a few extra minutes as well. I don't know if the rumoured box set of all the cuts is happening.

So what I'm asking it has anyone actually seen any of the other cuts, and are they worth shelling out for? The Ultimate sounds interesting, but at the same time, actually putting the Black Freighter in the film might make it too long methinks.

Games / Shattered Horizon

Has anyone played this? I'm curious to get some opinions before I risk shelling out on it. It looks like fun, and it seems to be a cool idea (multiplayer shooter in complete zero gravity) but at the same time I could see how that could just make it too hard to enjoy.

Help! / A Superman story I can't quite remember....
12 October, 2009, 01:45:25 PM
I can remember reading one issue of this particular story ages ago, but I've no idea what it was called; As far as I remember it was set in the future after Superman is dead, but through the miracle of science, a squad of heroes has been set up, each with one of Supe's powers. Except they have limits, like the flying guy has to be moving towards something, otherwise he'll drift away, the strong guy is too strong and keeps crushing everything, etc.

Anyone know this one? I don't know if it was a one-off or a series or what.

Film & TV / Zombieland

This is excellent. Yes, comparisions to Shaun of the Dead are going to be inevitable, and that's no bad thing, but if anything I'd say it feels more like a movie version of Left 4 Dead, with added humour. It's worth seeing for Woody Harrelson's ass-kicking and that awesome cameo.

Games / Audiosurf
05 October, 2009, 10:57:35 AM
I picked this up cheap the other day on Steam's weekend deal and I'd definitely recommend getting it while the deal is still on. It's loads of fun, and really addictive; Basically, It's a racing game where you drive a ship along a track and pick up coloured blocks , trying to match three or more for points. But, you can choose any music track on your computer, and the game designs the track based on that song. The faster the music, the faster you move, the heavier it gets, the more the track shakes and curves, etc. It's worth it just to play "Don't stop me now". :)

Film & TV / Fantastic Mr.Fox trailer

I love the look of this film. It's almost weird to see something done in old-fashioned stop-motion these days, but it looks great. I don't know much about the original story, but it definitely has the same quirky Wes Anderson feel to it that his films usually do, which I feel is a good thing.

Film & TV / UP

I saw this in 3D over the weekend. It's just lovely. More Pixar brilliance, the animation is excellent, the story and the characters are great. It's hard to say any more without spoiling it, but it's well worth it.

Also, if the ending doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you have no soul.

Film & TV / Speaking of remakes....The Fly
24 September, 2009, 10:51:23 PM
http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=25908

Ah, but you see, this one is being remade by the guy who remade it before... so it could potentially be good. But I can't really see the point in Cronenberg remaking one of his own films 20 years later, except maybe to spruce up the effects, and he doesn't seem like that kind of director. And furthermore, The Fly is a film where I don't see CGI beating the gooey effects of the original. Frankly, I don't know what to think.

Help! / Using Mac emulators on a PC
20 September, 2009, 10:55:13 PM
For geeky reasons (I'm bored and I've just watched Wall-E), I'm trying to get my hands on the original version of Macintalk. The program itself is easy enough to get, except I'm using a PC. Now, I'm told it can be done with Mac emulators and stuff, but I've tried a couple and they keep looking for Mac ROM files, and I have no idea what a Mac ROM file looks like. So basically, does anyone know how to use a Mac emulator on a PC?

This looks like fun. I can't quite buy Benicio del Toro as the son of Anthony Hopkins, but leaving that aside....

Film & TV / Inglourious Basterds
16 August, 2009, 08:43:12 PM
Well, I went in with pretty low expectations after hating Death Proof, and reading mixed reviews.  But, it turns out this is actually a whole load of fun. Dumb as a mule perhaps, but still fun. Self-indulgent wank is kept to a minimum, and instead we get a respectable amount of Tarantino violence, and the comedy ain't bad either; Michael Fassbender as a stiff-upper-lipped English captain is a hoot.
