Quote from: Barrington Boots on 12 June, 2023, 09:43:32 AMI'd be interested to know if you think a redemption arc is possible for the character now you've taken her down a far darker path - although I appreciate you may not want to discuss future plans for her!

Cheers, Barrington! The ambiguity is interesting, right? Civilised societies pride themselves on the notion that everyone – no matter how evil - is capable of some sort of redemption. Then again, what kind of redemption could ever be possible for crazed, remorseless monsters like Hitler or Ian Brady? Who gets to choose where that line is drawn? And, when it comes to popular stories about hitmen and killers, where do our sympathies lie? Which faction or species is getting 'othered' by whom?

Kim Newman (again) made a really good point in Shivers magazine back in the day regarding Buffy. He said that the premise of the show kinda unravels the moment a single vampire is capable of being rehabilitated. Every vampire Buffy nails could be a potential redemptee! It makes what she does feel less like heroism and more like genocide. I guess it's all in how you frame the story.

Thanks to everyone for reading!

Did an essay about writing the new Durham Red, why the Wagner/Grant/Ezquerra version was so iconic, vampire fiction, bloodletting and all that good stuff.
Aaaaand you can read it right here.

Colin YNWA: And the best thing about that mission briefing bit AND the breakfast scene is that you - the viewer - just doesn't realise all that work going on. It's invisible, which is just amazing. Not sure Cameron has ever bettered his scripts for this and Terminator.

Cheers, Barrington! The 'communal thought' thing was really me just spitballing. Loved the book overall, but found it really uneven and the head-hopping didn't help. First third was riveting, second third on Arrakis with his mum really dragged and the final third just zipped over these epic battles without really going into anything. Loved the knife-fight, though! Brilliantly written combat-scene.

Totally agree! Weirdly, I did another piece on the 'mission briefing' scene from that movie, which demonstrates exactly what you're talking about there...

I'm taking reader questions over at Agent of Weird. Here's the first batch of answers...

If you lot want to ask what works for me when writing stuff about vampires, aliens and wizards, then feel free to head over and drop a query in the comments. I'll get onto it in a few months or when I can't be bothered to think up a topic for myself. Thanks to EVERYONE who's been reading and sharing these posts. Hugely appreciated. People seem to be getting a lot out of them.

Hope you're enjoying Durham Red at the moment. Cheers!

I got back into RPGs thanks to my god-daughter. 5th Edition D&D is her thing, but I've managed to get her and her fella into Warhammer (though the system is super-crunchy). Really fascinated with the old school revival stuff like Dungeon Crawl Classics, Pirate Borg and the new Shadowdark, which I would've backed on Kickstarter but I missed the boat by a day. :P

That Courtney Solomon D&D flick is just... awful. Marlon Wayans is so bad in it, it's like he's trying to pick a fight with filmmaking itself!

Got to interview lovely chap and Warhammer author John French about nuts-and-bolts writing stuff that might be worth reading if you're sat waiting on the phone to get through to HMRC or something...

Cheers

How the tragic movie maniacs of The Black Phone and The Menu are all the more terrifying for having a hopeless method to their madness. (This piece contains mild spoilers.)
