Quote from: Fate Amenable to Change on 28 February, 2023, 07:04:40 PMFirefly is good - although I think the straight-talking captain's insistence on crushing on a high-class prostitute by continually calling her a whore in front of the rest of the crew might struggle to get scripted in the modern era.

I was totally in love with Farscape's brand of space-bananas on its original release. Watching it more recently it was like the entire cast were mainlining PCP. So, y'know - that could be difficult to put up with, depending on your frame of mind.

FireFly short and bitter sweet. At least they wrapped it up in Serenity. He was being a D to her, because he was into her and that was his way of keeping his distance. That is how I saw it, because he came back for her when he knew it was a total suicidal trap.

Watched Farscape awhile back and forgot about it, but I picked up SO1. Early days yet to see if it clicks.

Quote from: 8bitDredd on 27 February, 2023, 05:11:45 PMHello,

Old Babylon 5 fan needs recommendations for watching a new Sci-Fi TV series.

Is The Expanse any good?

New is releative a lot of old is new to me. Massive B5 fan for sure. I became a massive fan of the BSG reboot.

It had a lot of polical intrigue about reforming a civil government. While dealing with the tense relationship of military who was trying to protect the human race from extinction.

It covered a lot other ground the nature of existance, what it is to be human and religious themes. Issues of classism between people who came from other planets. Speciesism between the humans and cylons.

Quote from: Daveycandlish on 19 February, 2023, 04:47:45 PMI'm not going to get too excited about it until they announce some cast.
I thought the last one was half decent but needed an extra pass through the editing suit.
I still prefer Ron Perlman as Ol' Red but that ship has sailed.

De-aging and face mapping tech so they could stick his face on any body. He can still talk well enough between his odd video rants?

Wow that was a blast from the past trigger. That Isometric game made me think of Head Over Heels. Last Ninja 2 was my fave ISO game back in the day and the music rocked for beep, beep, beeping sound effects.

I signed up recently and it really did have a retro vibe. Kind of blast formatting from the past. Now it all shinny and new?

Film & TV / Re: James Gunn's DCU announcement

Ok when Gunn said Superman Legacy and the video showed a picture of All Star Superman SPOILERS (Sups is dying in that book)

Instead of a more fun Supergirl (say from B&tB/LoL) with Lobo they pick the edgy tortured Super girl version of Tom King.

Paradise Lost is kind of a middling book about abolishing the amazonian monarchy.

Jumping to Damian Wayne allows for bat family drama daddy/mommy issues and the potential death of a Robin again if they tack on from Batman Inc/New 52 stuff. The third Robin to die I have come across so far.

Very little knowledge of Swamp Thing beyond DCeased, but due to the current trends in Hollywood I can see him as the climate change angle.

No idea of the Authority beyond Gunn implying edgy Guardians vibe. Sounds like his thing that maybe he can pull that off?

Half the DCU writing team are the fail upward types. The DCU reboot maybe 50% ok maybe?

Dropping Cavil got rid of a chunk of good will after Gunn Teased Kingdom Come an older Sups, but then dropped him. Read S/KC this year and a quick fave. I get why the DCU dropped it. It is kind of a end game finisher movie even if it is a Elseword tale. Liked it better than the comic Civil War and the art is amazing.

The funny thing is that, because the DCU failed I went to the source looking for a DC superhero fix with the comics. I realised they haven't really adapted DC that well at all in live action. I don't expect Gunn to do any better adapting live action DC. He is known for telling his actors don't read the source.

It's surreal that fairly new to DC comics last year or so Gunn has focused on a lot of the slices of DC that I have tried.

So my bet is Gunn direction is Bat family melodrama, dying Superman, Anti monarchy Wonder Woman rejecting tradition and edgy tortured Supergirl stepping in for Sups. With Swamp Thing climate change the movie. The Authority BAMN is yet another deconstruction of the Superhero. So not like that hasn't been done to death with the Boys/Injustice.

Outer Worlds from the company who made Fallout New Vegas. It made me want to play New Vegas again. Looked pretty though I give it that.

Fringe is a series I liked, but forgot about, but hey I think that is just maybe getting older. I remember it being pretty cool with wierd sci-fi stuff going on. Like a X-files, Twilight Zone type of vibe. The dynamic of Walter Bishop and his son relationships is what I remember the most and it was doozy.

Pretty ok with the dumb/fun DCU except how they made the mold for the Injustice Superman. Seriously letting your Dad die, a smack down in smallville with the advice go in doors and lazering a space ship in half to crash through multiple buildings with the Zod neck snap. Then he splatted the crap out of the terrorist through a brick wall in BvS. F'd off after the terrorist bomb meant for him. Didn't he like first aid Lois in the first movie? Superman would of stayed and helped not flew away. RANT OVER.

I passed on WW 1984 as it seem like a elseworld that got set in the main universe. Synder Verse is dead they going to reboot with the same actors. James Gunn was teasing Kingdom Come and they can reset everything with a Flashpoint type of event.

Film & TV / Re: Boldly Going, in General...

I am a general Star Trek fan so I like to rewatch the TOS ST movies 2-4-6 (and Galaxy Quest). I did enjoy DS9, TNG, TOS, VOY and ENT in that order. I was thinking about picking up the entire run of DS9/TNG on bluray for a binge rewatch. Babylon 5 and then then the BSG reboot kind of knocked Star Trek off the my number one sci-fi serial show top spot. I have started to collect one small collectable from each character/film/franchise I am really into. I think I might get the TOS phaser paying homage to Star Treks roots. When it comes to small screen leads it's hard to pick between Sisko and P'icard as my fave boss/leader character. I think older movie Kirk is better than younger TV Kirk though. Leonard Nimoy Spock will always be legendary for how good he was in both TV and movie adaptations. 1st B5, 2nd BSG(r), 3rd Star Trek, 4th Matt Smith Dr Who run. Which kind of says where we are with current small screen sci-fi when the oldies are still the goldies.

I tried to get my x3 nephews into comics via 2th / asterix / tintin and complete arcs of amazing spid.  green lantern etc.

no joy - they're sticking to the world of ps5

but then i had a thought the other day:

If i remember correctly, comics cost me around 75p when i first got into them and they're £4.00 approx at the mo'

Either a young person is getting them via, hand-me-down / parent buying or pocket money.

it must be hard to discover something great when it has a hefty price-tag attached?

and i still cant believe the top 300 comics number 1 was only bought by 78,080 people [approx] in the world [icv2 diamond]

Oh, and i went to the xl centre to a comic-con a few years ago and wasn't able to buy any comics there

hoping free comic book day and digital editions help bring in a new generation?

Well coming back to comics after a very long time away I noticed how comics are sold thesedays. A few select collectable stores and book shops compared when they used to be sold all over the place. Yes I know about the digital market and tried it, but something is lost in the comic book experience imo. I am getting most of the back issue stuff off a local comic reseller and third party amazon sellers (even Ebay at a pinch).

Comics were more of a thing back then and gaming culture wasn't as big as it was today. The big and little kids are into gaming, but one did raid my comics to read. Some JLA, Marvel Civil War, Username Evie, Zombo and they got themselves a Flash Rebirth local. For kids to get into comics we really need to pass the torch on thesedays to get some eyes on.

As I am not a speculator/collector so I am not bothered to much about condition. I am picking up GN for a song £3 to £5 off resellers graded at mostly very good. So I have a lot cheap books that I don't care if they get more worn by the kids.

Thought I lost my passion for gaming, but it's all about finding the right thing reignite the passion. Funny thing it is a mod Call of Chernobyl. Limited main story element, but lots of side missions. Plus it has all the maps of the three games to wander about it and some interesting gear changes.

Ok thank for that I get the Rogue Trooper stuff pretty easy and cheap. I remember reading about him back in the day like Dredd. I can't really remember anything Strontium Dog related. The character must not of made a long lasting impression. I do remember Slaine, Zenith and ABC warriors more so.

Don't normally buy GN new I get them pre-owed local or Amazon third party seller for about £5. I did get Batman Earth One complete out of Forbidden Planet on sale £22 ish that is a chunky book (it's also in the online store on sale). I think I got lucky picking Zombo for £2 at the same store (not that price online, but still on sale).
