Was really annoyed by Resident Alien transferring out to its own comic, completely undermines the integrity of DHP. Not overly sure it makes huge commercial sense  either - are Hogan or Parkhouse names that shift issues in American comics?

Mainly I'm just pissed at not getting more Parkhouse art in DHP.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

Have the Hellboy, Beasts Of Burden, and Concrete strips in DHP undermined the integrity of their comics?

I wasn't aware Concrete was back as a comic book. Oh its not. Dunno what you're on about.

I wasn't aware Beasts of Burden was back as a comic book. Oh its not. Dunno what you're on about.

Hellboy is for Hellboy fans, can't say I cared for its appearance in DHP. However it was an existing property, not one spun out from DHP like Resident Alien.

So, none of those really are analogous to Resident Alien.

The rubbish Frank Miller thing from DHP 1 was nearer to what they have done with Resident Alien and even then they said 'HERE IS A 4 PAGE PREVIEW' not 'heres 3 episodes.. it will return' and then spin it out to a different book. If Blood, Finder etc were given 3 episodes then spun out to their own books then not only would I not be buying those (as I wont be buying Resident Alien unless it gets a trade) I also wouldn't be buying DHP full stop.

But you see Evil Pants, heres the thing... I can have my opinion of the desirability or otherwise of what they did with Resident Alien and you can have yours. And nothing you can say will alter mine so I don't really get why you are attempting to argue. Even badly.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

I'm not pleased with Resident Alien (and The Massive too) spinning out of DHP I would have much rather seen it as a regular on-going feature (and concidering it's only 4 issue mini-series not a full series why it was spun out is a head scratcher). My gut says we're going to continue seeing this sort of thing going forward. I won't be suprised to see Number 13 and Murky World doing the same thing too. Alabaster Wolves used DHP as a glorified preview too.

I'm not a fan of this model, but it's pretty clear it's what Dark Horse will continue to do. Which personally I see as problematic as it undermines the desirability of the title since anything of note will collected/continued else where.

That being said, if Finder spun out into its own title I'd be right there. Because Finder is amazing. I'm glad it sticks around as a regular feature. DHP needs more of that. To bad the only other title of that type is Blood. Because Blood is fucking awful.

The Hellboy, Beasts Of Burden And Concrete strips did not undermine the integrity of DHP, they were all self contained tales which utilised characters from the Dark Horse line. They required no previous knowledge of the saurce material, (I've not read either Beasts Of Burden or Concrete outside of DHP) nor did they lead into a series outside of DHP.
Murky World & Marked Man may well spin into their own series (Limited or otherwise.) If there is the demand for either of them. But what was presented in DHP was complete, it had a begining, a middle and (most important) an end.
Both Resident Alien & The Massive were set ups for series that would not be concluded within the pages of DHP. It's a marketing tool, an advertising gimmick, a (not free) promo. Sell story to readers in a anthology title £££, re-sell story in a collected edition '0' (and hopefully pick up more readers who had not read anthology.) £££, continue story in own title #1 £££. Re-sell anthology or issue '0' when readers of issue #1 realise that the story has begun elsewhere £££.

Or am I being cynical?

I'm not being critical of Resident Alien as a strip, as I've said before, I enjoyed what I read of it.

Alright, I concede! I'm obviously in the minority here..and you all raise some great points. Thanks for the good debate on this.

Oh Evil Pants.  For shame.  This is the internet.  You must defend your position beyond the point of absurdity.  You must call into question the sexual orientation and parentage of your opponents.  You must, at the very least, compare their viewpoint to that of Nazis and/or godless Liberals.  How can we hold our heads up as a forum knowing that rational debate takes place here.   :'(

I was going to do that, but then I remembered that a) I really like coming here, b) I see the validity of what others are saying, and c) I really like godless Liberals. I'm Canadian after all.

They let Canadians in here?!! Right, that's it, I'm outta here!

(And just to switch back on topic for a second; the only reason I bought DHP was for this story. Once it left it's pages I stopped buying, so they've screwed up there...)
An old-school, no-bullshit, boys-own action/adventure comic reminiscent of the 2000ads and Eagles and Warlords and Battles and other glorious black-and-white comics that were so, so cool in the 70's and 80's - Buy the hardback Christmas Annual!

Well that's silly, because DHP has many great things running through its pages. Resident Alien was just one of many good comics in there. What made you stop?

Yeah...DHP is one of the absolute best reads on the stands right now. So much greatness in 80 pages.

Well, the new series has just dropped, in prelude to the forthcoming SYFY adaptation, and on the strength of this first issue, it's going to be as gently compelling and full of great character development as the previous series.

If this proves to be the finally arc, as rumoured, then it appears to be going out on a high and I, for one, can't wait to see how it's all wrapped up.
