I went back and played Just Cause 3. I know what you're thinking, you're thinking "Why did you do that, you handsome Genius?" and my answer would be "Just 'cos".

It is a fantastically fun game with a simple yet satisfying core gameplay loop:

1.Wreak Havoc
2.Unlock challenges like races and whathaveyou
3.Beat Challenges to upgrade your havoc-wreaking tools
4.Go to step 1

All of this on the absolutely gorgeous fictional Mediterranean islands of Medici. It avoids the stumbling block of appearing like a condensed theme park version of real place and actually feels like it could be a real place in the Med. Well it would if you ignore the lack of "lads on tour" that usually ruin these places.

Played this through last year. A lot, lot, lot of fun.

Much like Just Cause 2, JC3 felt like a tech demo but the best tech demo ever.  The movement of the main character and the selection of weapons and toys were a joy but the lazy copy and paste missions really ruined it.

Instead of setting those games in 50,000 square miles of bugger all, they should try to put together a cohesive set of story missions with a bit more of a focus.

Am I the only one who stopped playing JC2 after hour or two? I was frustrated with the mission where you must clean the outside of the casino or something. But I got always put down, which left me frustrated. I never got used to gameplay of JC2.

Binary Domain

I played this out of sheer curiosity. If nothing else for than how I missed this tps when it was released. You are in the futuristic Japan, and you kill robots. Lots of them. Somehow given the subject matter, I don't think there is a better place for setting than Japan. I must say, this is not another run of the mill shooter. I was surprised how fresh it feels. Graphics are amazing (for the game released in 2012 I think), level and enemies design diverse, boss fights entertaining and your teammates aren't bunch of quacks. When I think about it, the game feels very much like RE6, with numerous Michael Bay set-pieces, but I suppose it only engages you more into the experience. And the plot had some interesting philosophical points to make. Although, when it comes to game's shortcomings, I hated that at the end, the game turns into "love conquers all" cliche. That part annoyed the hell out of me.

Resident Evil Revelations

Despite its shortcomings, (such as the aforementioned crappy 3D map in another thread), this B game turned out to be less frustrating than RE6 and more fun altogether. Okay, being port from Nintendo meant that graphics are lackluster, even for the year it is released. And inconsistent controls, aiming uneven and evade system broken aside, I welcome the simplified, bare-bones gameplay and its lack of ambition that buried RE6. Storywise, well, I was never invested in the lore of RE. And plots are more or less the same in every their game. A conspiracy, a mystery, a betrayal - all is found here as well. I also find here moments of unintentional humor as Jessica seems keener on jumping Chris' bones than focusing on the mission. Chris however, the character he is, retains his cool.

Alien: Isolation. Fuck, just fuck. I started sweating and had several jump moments before even sighting the xeno. I think this game is trying to kill me.

Just a couple of hours into Remothered: Tormented Fathers on the Switch, and enjoying it so far.

Maybe not the same aesthetic, but I find myself reminded of horror games of yore like Manhunt and the original Silent Hill.

Have you played I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream game based on the story by Harlan Ellison? Maybe not a horror game per se, but I had many sleepless nights because of it. It's available again on Steam.

Holy... I gotta play this. I love the Ellison's story. Never thought they made a game out of it, tho.

Never read nor played it, but will keep an eye out for both formats.

I've bailed on The Last of Us 2.

It is dripping with quality and clearly very good but there are a few things that I just can't be bothered with.

I don't much care about Ellie.  I think I related more to playing as Joel in the first game.

I don't much care about the bad guys.  Some random group that Joel pissed off some time in the past?  It reminds me of s5 of Breaking Bad in that he'd fought the local drug kingpins and then the cartel but s5 was about some random group of meth heads.

There's way too much story/talking.  It's at Metal Gear Solid levels.  It's not like any of it is interesting.

Ellie is going to confront a whole gang by herself?  And then a girl tags along because they had an awkward kiss?  She's going to travel to Seattle in the snow wearing jeans?

I found the controls a bit sluggish and weirdly I couldn't figure out if I wanted to invert Y because everything felt a bit 'off'.

Main one though is that I'm a bit done with games that have me scutting around abandoned supermarkets looking for bandages or some shit.  Fallout 3 turned me off to that sort of thing and I've never enjoyed it since.

Honestly, take the best four or five hours and make an amazing game.  35 hours of this stuff?  Life's too long to fill it with stuff like this.

Started Returnal.  It's good.  Not £70 good though.  Although it is getting better the more I play it.

TBH I doubt there will be anything this gen that I find £70 good enough.
