Oink!'s take on Dredd

JudgeOiNK!

Hey all, thought you might like to see this.

Many moons ago one of 2000AD's stablemates was the humour comic, Oink! (a couple of issues were given away with Progs too).  I've been writing a blog about it for two years now, which has surprised me as my attention span for any previous projects died within months.  But this one has kept on going and I've even become friendly with a lot of the writers and cartoonists (which still amazes me!), including the one who drew this cover and strip which I recently covered:

The late and very great Mark Rodgers supplies the script and Steve Gibson the artwork for the one-off strip inside.  Mark was always doing this in Oink!, but it was always meant in a respectful way.  Whether it was the Dandy and Beano, Whizzer and Chips or 2000AD, they were parodies and Mark was a firm believer that you parody what you admire, otherwise it's satire and there's a huge difference.  He was a massive fan of comics and here's his take on Dredd:

There's a couple of other Dredd parodies in Oink! which I'll dig out for you, one is coming up soon where Dredd himself, rather than the pig version, comes up against Psycho Gran!

Oh yes!  Imagine that!  Here's the third part of the Ham Dare - Pig of the Future strip he did with Lew Stringer, seemed fitting by way of comparison, given Dan Dare's home in 2000AD at one stage.  I would've loved to have seen his take on Dredd and in particular Mega-City One!  Such a sad loss he's no longer with us, a huge talent gone far too soon.

pity none of this stuff collected  i still have my oink annuals somewhere, rupert the pear been a particular favourite. Frank Sidebottom is a miss as well

Yeah, it was when I saw the passing of Chris Sievey, aka Frank, online that I started collecting old issues again and my interest flared up.  My blog has a good selection but obviously I can't reprint everything.  Egmont were gracious enough (even linked to me on their Classic Comics site) but they only own the name, the characters are all creator-owned.  Fortunately everyone who worked on it that I've been in touch with have been really supportive.

As for a future Oink! publication....:

that's brilliant news, so many good british strips/artists disappear without trace.

I remember there was a flexi-disc that came with an early issue, featuring a rap I think?

"Don't eat pigs 'cause they're made from ham..." or something like that...?

JudgeOiNK!

"... Eat that nasty butcher-man."  Yep, you're right!

Thanks Judge Nutmeg, it's going to be a long process but I'm enjoying it.  The comic gave birth to a lot of amazing talent that have gone on to work in comics, TV, film and music, we really were spoilt as kids with such a pool of creators in a humour comic.  Did you know Oink! was Charlie Brooker's first job?  He worked for it while he was 16/17 and still at school!

Oink flexi-disc on YouTube.

Seems there were actually two songs – brilliant! Can we get Tharg to do a flexi-disc too?

I have this in the same box of records as the De La Soul flexi-disc which came attached to a box of Frosties.
We never really die.

JudgeOiNK- welcome to the forum with open arms for bringing the Oink love.

I absolutely adored that comic (at one stage it equaled the Prog for my affections).
I've read 'em all, but only have about 50% of them still in my possession.

I'm a pretty big fan of Lew Stringer and his enormous contribution to Oink too.
I've amassed a sizable collection of Stringer drawn Oink original art over the past few years- must get back to posting my crappy low res phone pics again!
(Yeah, still haven't joined CAF...)

Third Estate Ned

I became a regular reader after my parents bought me a copy to shut me up on a dreary weekend shopping trip. They thought it was like Buster, which I liked then. I remember being in the back of the car shocked that there was what I believed to be an actual swearword in a comic. There was some punk band singing: "Zip zap, we hate this Eurovision crap, we wanna rock 'n' roll." Mum was against, dad was for. Dad won.

I seem to remember Buster taking on some Oink characters like Pete and his Pimple after it folded.

It'd be great if you get Brooker to do an interview/introduction to the book, was surprised to see there was so few issues. I remember rip offs like acne but they never had as much care and detail to parody in them. Hope book has a chapter about Mr Sidebottom in it.

JudgeOiNK!

Thanks very much Link Prime!  I'm a huge fan of Lew's too and he's hugely welcoming to fans talking about Oink! on the Facebook group and the like.  A true gent.  I think nearly every comic I bought as a kid or teen had a strip by him in it at some stage, including the Marvel UK action titles.

Third Estate Ned, yeah that was quite late on, during the weekly phase and I covered it just recently on the blog (here, if you'd like to revisit memory lane: http://the-oink-blog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/52-frankly-superb.html) it was a bit of a shock even now, still not sure if it should've been in there to be honest.

Judge Nutmeg, there'll definitely be a good bit of material about the late Mr Sidebottom, he was such an integral part of the comic, and Patrick Gallagher (one of the three Oink! editors and original creators) has some simply brilliant stories about him!

Woolly

Oink! was my comic of choice when i was a nipper, like Viz for kids.
Thanks for sharing the links, and reminding me of 'Poop Poop Tinkle Tinkle Parp Parp Oink'! Drove my Mum crazy with that floppy single

Would love to know how they got away with this cover...
