Suggestions / Collected Tharg Strips
« on: 26 May, 2019, 12:25:32 PM »
I may be in a minority, but I'd really love the Tharg strips brought together and reprinted in a graphic novel.
They were - for me at least - as much a part of 2000ad's history as every other strip or character that's seen a reprint.
I know some stuff has been reprinted before - I have a 2000ad Monthly that was dedicated to the Mighty One - but it's not extensive and I doubt anything currently out there that's similar will be.

I know these strips aren't as dramatic and edgy as your collected Judge Dredds, Rogue Troopers and such, and there may not be as much interest, but they were fun and imaginative and were as zarjaz as anything else 2000ad put out.

Just me then...?

Film & TV / New 'Salem's Lot' Movie
« on: 28 April, 2019, 12:13:15 PM »
I knew this would happen - following 'It' and 'Pet Cemetery', I figured there'd be a new adaption of this vampire classic. The original tv movie is a stone cold classic chiller, and vampires have rarely been that scary since, so personally I'm both excited for this project and also dreading it. Those are mighty big boots to fill...

The involvement of James Wan and Gary Dauberman gives me hope though. I can't think of anyone better than Doug Jones to play Kurt Barlow - especially as I've just discovered he's involved with a crowdfunding project to remake - or "revisualise" - 'Nosferatu', which he has donned vampire prosthetics for a screen test, which you can see below. He's definitely the man for the job in my opinion..!

So what do you reckon? A classic ready for a rebirth, or should it be left alone? Are you happy with the chaps involved or do you have your own ideas?

Creative Common / Why Don't I Enjoy Art Any More?
« on: 15 September, 2018, 10:33:58 AM »
Forgive me if this topic has been raised elsewhere - I didn't check if it has.
I'm just looking to talk about something that's been bothering me, and if someone has the patience and time to share any advice, support or understanding of this topic, then I'll be extremely grateful.

In a nutshell, I've lost my passion for drawing and I want it back.
When I was younger, I used to draw all the time. While the popular kids played football during break times at school, I'd sit in the corridor sketching away with other kids gathering around to watch me. I drew the most crazy characters and creatures from my mind, and felt comics and illustration was my obvious career path. But when I hit my early 30s, I suffered a creative block that lasted a decade. I was going through depression, and some circumstances in my life knocked the confidence out of me.

I came back to drawing thanks to the monthly art competitions on this very forum, and people thankfully seemed to like what I did. I've never felt I was quite good enough for comics or book illustration, despite what people said to me. I've never felt like I got my art mojo fully returned to me.

This year, I finished a year at college and have knocked out a string of commissions for people so it's apparent people like what I do. However, I've stopped enjoying drawing and everything I do - even when it's just sketching for myself - is a joyless chore. Right now, I'm considering getting rid of all my art books and materials because I feel like accepting the idea that I should just stop trying.
But there's a part of me reluctant to give up - drawing was the best skill I had, and if I don't have that - what DO I have?

Apologies for rambling on, I just wanted to talk with fellow artists who have gone through - or are maybe going through - what I'm currently experiencing. I need to figure out if it's worth sticking with or should I accept the passion is gone and let it go.

Thanks for reading/listening.

General / Why is Judge Fear so unpopular?
« on: 07 January, 2018, 10:30:09 PM »
It's a question that's been buzzing round in my head for a while now, but I've noticed he's usually the first to be bumped off in a lot of Dark Judge stories and I don't know whether it's for this reason, but he seems to be the least popular out of the four among readers...
Does he look naff? Are his powers lesser than those of the others?

Thought you chaps with drawing skills might be interested in this competition to design a creature for the upcoming movie...

Creative Common / My Artwork Collected
« on: 04 August, 2017, 12:54:17 AM »
Taking inspiration from Steve Denton - and as a result of Photosuckit causing all previous artwork to disappear - I'm collating all the competition entries I did, the calendar artwork and a few odds and sods and putting them all in one thread. Please forgive the indulgence, it seemed like a good idea from Mr Denton in light of everything being lost.
Hope you enjoy :)

General / New Photobucket Terms & Conditions
« on: 15 July, 2017, 09:15:20 PM »
I've just been made aware of Photobucket's terms and conditions by friends who have "lost" their images and I wanted to check if this is likely to affect the forum, especially since a lot of people use Photobucket for the art-related threads.
As an ad-free site, Photobucket has decided to charge it's users without any real notice, for using the platform to be embedded in third party websites such as this forum.

It sounds as though all the images we have uploaded from Photobucket will eventually be replaced with upgrade graphics, and will only be returned by paying their fee for it's continued use.

I'm not sure if this will affect us all, and if so whether that effect will be instantaneous or affect users one by one, but I thought I should raise the issue with the forum admin and forum users if you and they weren't aware of it already.

A link to an article about this issue is below:

Music / Film Scores & Soundtracks
« on: 28 May, 2017, 11:52:11 PM »
As much as I love popular music, there's something about the occasional movie score that gets me in places those pop songs fail to reach. At times, they can act as beautiful chill-out music, other times they can be soaring and rousing or just toe-tappingly catchy.

What themes and scores have caught your attention? Does the Star Wars theme give you goosebumps?
Do you like to be shaken, not stirred by a Bond song? Perhaps you can suggest some that I can add to my playlist below.
Please forgive my indulgence but I LOVE listening to this playlist - it's really helped to influence and inspire when I've been working on a drawing or painting. It's mostly sci-fi/fantasy based, and there'll be some tunes very familiar to you, or should you check out any of the links, you might come across something new that hits you in the right spot... ;)

Film & TV / Universal's Dark Universe
« on: 24 May, 2017, 11:46:22 PM »
I'm sure you've all seen the trailer for the The Mummy movie, starring Tom Cruise, and some of you know that this is the first in a series of films that will form a Marvel-style universe, involving Universal's legendary monsters.
I feel like I should be cynical about this project, and I'm not entirely won over by the trailer for The Mummy, nor am I a fan of Tom Cruise - but I'm actually looking forward to seeing classic movie monsters brought to life again and coming together - so long as it's more The Monster Squad than Van Helsing.

So Aside from Mr. Cruise and Sofia Boutella as the titular Mummy, we'll see Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde, Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man, and Javier Bardem as Baron Frankenstein.

There's a bit about The Mummy, including the trailer here:

And there's a lovely montage of clips from the original films that signals the coming "rebirth":

As I said above, this could turn out to be pants and a case of bandwagon-jumping, but I do hope it actually turns out to be really good...

Film & TV / Supernatural/Scooby Doo Crossover
« on: 19 May, 2017, 12:34:49 PM »
Anyone out there still watching Supernatural..?

Season 13 (THIRTEEN!!) will see the Winchester brothers get all 2D and share an episode with Scooby Doo himself.
I've enjoyed the crazy meta episodes of Supernatural, but this sounds bonkers. I dare say they'll make it work somehow, I'm just wondering if it's not getting a bit silly and desperate thirteen series in...

Suggestions / More Ampney Crucis Investigates?
« on: 18 May, 2017, 11:18:00 PM »
I bloody love this strip, so I wondered if there was any chance for more adventures from messrs Edginton and Davis? I know it's been a while since Ampney's last case, but I hope I'm not the only one who's hungry for more.
Failing any new adventures, will we ever see a volume 2 to follow "Vile Bodies"?

Film & TV / The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance
« on: 18 May, 2017, 09:29:37 PM »
Just found out The Dark Crystal will be getting a prequel tv series on Netflix.
What do ya make of that then...?
