Megazine / Meg 434 The Radlands Raiders !

Well this meg was ok not great just ok saved by Devlin and Angelic. Surely missing 3 strips which I will not name but we all know I am talking about.

Dredd – In some sense the theme of the Dredd story is not my favourite, and the story is carried by Staz’s excellent art. The episode does carry some interesting events and it would be interesting to see where this will end up.

Diamond Dogs – This episode felt a bit empty, and it would have been nice to have certain parts given a little more background. So, this one was a bit of a step backwards in the storyline.

Angelic – As I enjoyed the previous run (I cannot even remember when last this was in the meg), this arc starts on a right foot.

The Returners – This story feels like it is leading me in the wrong direction, and it might be that I am starting the loose the direction and what is going on. Currently it feels like events are happening without any reason or purpose. I might have to re-read the whole arc or something.

Devlin – Well mister Waugh you have an interesting set of choices or rather a choice to make. A deal with the Devil is always lopsided. Great stuff from Kots, he is surely now established himself that can take the strip forward.

Other Reviews / 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special 2021
« on: 07 July, 2021, 09:51:19 AM »
This year’s special rather than to focus on smaller stories or specific characters in the AD-verse are presented by one big event story broken-up in 5 parts and wrapping up in a finale. Different artists are used for each section of the special.

The smaller stories are there to support the fact that this is a global event and rather than a localized event. Chopper, Cursed Earth Koburn, Armitage, Devlin Waugh, and Judge Inaba are the support cast, Dredd and Anderson are the leads. As the stories starts to unfold, we realised events occurring over the global has something in common. The common thread is only revealed in the Anderson storyline.  Whereas the first story featuring Dredd kick-off the event the Anderson story leads us into the grand finale.

Overall, I liked the special and especially liked the fact that it is one big story. The bigger story gives it much more depth and space to grow. The end is an indication that we might even get more from the “characters” that was introduced.

Positive points
-   The art in general was quite good, special mentioned must go to Googe’s fine art on the Inaba story
-   One big story, can focus on the main theme
-   Armitage and Devlin together in one story, this might be a first as well

Negative points
-   Well, if you do not like the theme this might be one big let-down
-   If you are not a big Dredd-verse fan you will also be let-down

General / John Smith article
« on: 26 June, 2021, 02:51:48 PM »
Here is a very nice article about john smith and his work.  It would ne nice if he could make a return, he always had a very unique and interesting voice with a lot of brilliant ideas.

Other Reviews / Black Beth and the Devils of Al-Kadesh
« on: 24 June, 2021, 05:37:07 AM »
This has been a very enjoyable read and the whole setup and environment reminds me of the world of Conan and Red Sonja.

The special is divided into 3 stories whereas the first takes off from the previous stories published in the Scream specials.  Alec Worley continues to deliver the script for all the stories.

Art for the first story is again provided by Dani and is also the one that takes up the bulk of the special.  This story basically wraps-up what happened in the previous specials and is written in such away that you do not have to read the previous stories. A lot of action and the story rockets at a Bolt-like pace but still feels does not feels rushed.

The second story is a quick 3 pager and is more of a filler.

The third story continues the story of the Death Man and visuals are provided by Vincenzo Riccardi and script by Doug Graves. The story is not to bad but not the most dynamic and is adequate.

Overall, I liked the special and I can see potential for a series of Black Beth in the prog or even in the meg.  So hopefully we will see more off the characters on display here.

Books & Comics / Rok Of The Reds
« on: 03 March, 2021, 04:37:49 AM »
I have backed the kickstarter for Rok the God. It was a great read. Now I see that Rok Of The Reds is finally available in digital format and my question is, is it worthwhile getting if you have already read Rok the God? I am quite tempted since this is John Wagner for crying out loud.

Other Reviews / Revere
« on: 13 February, 2021, 09:13:58 AM »
With Rebellion deciding to release certain series digitally it gives me time to revisit the selected few. One of those is Revere. I will be honest, and it is one of those series which I frankly cannot remember anything about. I am not a big fan of Simon Harrison work and thus never read it with any vigour. With my original collection gone I lost the opportunity to read it as an adult. I decided I will read it with an open mind. So here are my views:
At the end it is weird, wacky, dystopian, surreal johnsmitheen tale. Maybe one of my earlier problems was more related to a lost in translation. I always preferred the more straight-forward action-oriented stories and this was a different beast. My final conclusion is that I can recommend this, and I did enjoy it the second time around. If you like John Smith’s work get this; if you are a Simon Harrison fan, then get this. The art I found much better than I can remember. The colour schema used by Simon suites his work rather than his strong B/W ink-work.

General / The Judges Helmet
« on: 25 January, 2021, 01:19:29 PM »
I saw a picture of an upcoming strip on Dredd by Chris Weston (pic below). When actually did the Judges helmet change from the roundest form to the more edgy design? Was the transition in a specific story ? or did it just happened over time?

From Chris Weston's twitter:

Coming soon to @2000ad: Judge Dredd talks a stroll down Memory Lane... but will it lead to danger?

(Of course it does! It's Judge Bloody Dredd, innit?!)

Script and art by yours truly. I'll let you know what Prog its in once I know.

Books & Comics / Devlin Waugh in the prog

I never knew that Devlin Waugh had a run in the prog. How good is it and is it worth getting the Devlin Waugh Swimming in Blood graphic novel containing these stories?

General / What happened to Gerry
« on: 22 January, 2021, 02:41:12 PM »
I always wondered why Gerry Finley-Day left Rogue Trooper. I never got a clear answer. It was almost like he was moved out and after this move Rogue Trooper was never the same. Yes, I am Rogue Trooper and Gerry fan, so just wondering.
