I am a big fan off the Blake & Mortimer series.

Interestingly that's one of the few I've struggled with. I also didn't get on with IR$ and Crusader. Other than those the one's I've read have all been winners.

I've got Islandia vol.1 coming in the post,...

Its great.

... It's just a shame Cinebook's translation is written in awkward dialogue lacking any elegance. I'm assuming the original language version (as well as being uncensored) is better....

Yeah the translation are a bit flat and ackward at times. Especially when you think of books like Asterix and the translation (which I imagine has a MUCH bigger budget!) there.

There are also art changes to remove nudity which can be a little clumsy at times.

When did Robin Smith do a Judge Death story?

A few episodes of the first Anderson Psi Division story, Revenge (also known as The Four Dark Judges) - after Brett Ewins and before Cliff Robinson.
He did an episode or two of the Anderson story that's included. Was it between Ewins and Robinson (maybe after to finsh up I can't remember)

Edit: OR

There will only be one game left in each of the groups in Short Region after today’s votes finish - so much can be decided by what happens here. So get ya votes on...

All you need do is vote for your favourite between:

Incident on Zeta - more info

Vs

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite of these two stories at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easy) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Saturday 7th August and the winner (I’ll count up who gets the most votes basically) gets 3 points towards qualifying… huh…

… there’s a spreadsheet to make following easier… if you fancy. If not, don’t worry just VOTE!!!!

What on Earth is all this?

Why on Tharg’s Earth head are we doing this?

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Oh and my ‘More info’ links… well I don’t say how much more and they get pretty wonky at times!

If one man reads Cinebooks and reviews them on a forum does he make a sound?

Who cares.

What you should care about is Leo comics. I've just read the Antares cycle all 6 volumes over the last few nights and its really rather good. Kim Kellers reluctant adventures continue with the typical blend of fabulous ecosystems and 2001 alien science shapes and intrigue. Okay so Jedidiah, the religious fanatic is a bit cliche and two dimensional to say the least and he is used to rather hammer home the theme of the dangers of religion and in all honestly is an annoying distraction from the more interesting relationships and mysteries.

Its wonderful stuff.

Progged at last. And despite what appears to be the prevailing view here a good one in my eye.

Dredd is of course excellent. I do wonder if John Higgins doesn't like / get on with the new Robo-Judge design the way he kept it off panel. Utterly trival point but other than that this would just be more of the same ol' praise!

Skip Tracer now I accept it hard to argue with Indigo Prime's point about the fridging, on reflection it is pretty weak BUT I can kinda see some more potential here. Is the strip going to move into Lone Wolf and Cub territory - a psyhic Lone Wolf and Cub at that. I can really see some potential there. So I'll give this more rope and while this wasn't as strong as recent episodes it still much better than it was.

Department K look I think this was been brilliant. I really liked the ending and if we have The Fantastic Four and we got Galactus / Celestials and this is clearly been all very Kirby based I wonder if we're now moving onto a post Kirby Dark Phoenix Saga rift now. That I could live with. The ending really work, set up potential and I loved the post credit scene leading us into the next story. All in all a triumph for me this one.

Dexter I actually though this was pretty good. I am losing the will with Bulletopia after we were promised so much but this moves things on and calls back on elements clearly established to be drawn back on so happy with this in and of itself.

Aquila remains fantastic.

... if this thread is still open?

It is this one closes on Friday - don't worry that you have seen the stories before the qualifies are based on a round robin.

Look you can see the fun on this handy dandy spreadsheet

Slavers of Drule V The Killing  - Bolt-01 Cup - Qualifying - Long: Game 08

So things will start to take sharp on the back of this game in Long Region Group 1. This second round of games will give us a very clear indication of how this group will finish up. At the minute of course it's all to play form...

Books & Comics / Re: One Eyed Jack - Review
« on: 02 August, 2021, 09:15:36 PM »
Knew there was a review thread for this somewhere.

Just worked my way through 'One-eyed Jack' and gotta say its brutal - really brutal. I'm quietly amazed that Valiant got away with this. I mean sure different times and all that but the things Jack gets away with in the name of 'Not playing by the book' are pretty astonishing. Then you get to the last part of the stories, in which Jack McBane in time honoured fashion throws in his badge cos... well just read what he does and then what the criminals he sets up, in a very elaborate scheme, do to him...

The stories are very compacted in their three and sometimes 4 pages and the suffer a little for it at times. And as you might expect it burns through ideas in no time. Its a thrilling read, if read in small doses, I kept stopping though before it all got too jarring.

The real star however is John Cooper, dark, hard bitten art. Its just perfect. I loved his stuff on Johnny Red (such a shame we only got one volume of his work on that strip from Titan - come on Rebellion get his stuff back in print) but his art here is even more perfect. His character work is wonderful. His action hard and violent. Its just superb stuff.

So yeah read in small doses this volume is an absolute treat.

Just finished reading issue 500 with the boy (he reads it himself first then we read it together) and while its good - love the cover - if you enjoyed that one DEFO check out another issue or two I would say that one wasn't as good as a 'typical' issue of late.

News / Re: Brian Bolland Apex Edition
« on: 02 August, 2021, 08:02:31 PM »
Now that this has been announced as available to pre-order from the 2000ad Webshop tomorrow, I have to ask: Were those missing pages of artwork ever tracked down for re-scanning?

The slip case special edition is available Wednesday (not tomorrow being Thursday) according to the e-mail I got earlier - just to save folks refreshing all day tomorrow. Not sure how many its limited to but suspect it will go in a flash and will be flipped onto ebay at inflated prices very quickly.

The standard edition will be available to order from 8th October. Both release Februay I think.

I'm tempted but want to see how much the special edition is - now if it was McMahon....

Not all of them, no. Entertainingly, it turns out Bolland himself had some of the pages though.

Says a lot about so-called fandom if certain parties are keeping pages back to spite Rebellion.

Interesting some folks have said that Rebellion hadn't contact Brian Bolland about this - I think Brian might have said as much - yet clearly they have now and the slip case has a specially commissioned page unique to it by the sound.

Yeah I have to say even when the Boy Child goes the way of the Girl Child and decides he's too 'grown-up' for the Phoenix I strongly suspect I'll carry on with it. Its just good craft plain and simple and therefore the real definition of All Ages.

Good comics is good comics.
