Do anyone know if Rebellion is planning to do Johnny Red reprints and if there is any plans of doing the Charley's War WWII stuff as well ?

[Dredd]

A good  serviceable meg.

Dredd – This is a continuation of the Red Price story arc and this episode serves as more of setup to the next chapter of the arc. The Red Price storyline is one of my favourite storylines in the Dredd-verse the last few years. What makes this great as well is to have the same creative team working on it. Jake Lynch art has grown on me and he is now one off my favourite Dredd artist.

Black Museum – Another good one-shot with good art provided by Anna Morozova (her first work was on a Future Shock recently)

Devlin – Another interesting Devlin story and this one feels also more like a setup for what is too come next.

Lawless – As always this is the highlight of the meg. This one is a double episode. The episode jumps between the different characters as they are scheming and conniving creating plots within plots. Bring on the next series!!!

It is time for the next round of voting power. Who can stand against Dredd the mega man, the face of law and justice? Which of his mega epics will raise and be counted as the mega-of-mega tales? Now brace before you must do cube-time and tell us your top stories.



How does this work

1.   You vote for your top 15 Dredd mega-epics (this is all those Dredd stories that was around for the long haul, 7 and upwards)
2.   You can only make your choice from the list that is supplied below

I was thinking that with all our tournaments we having is that we are actually ignoring one of the main reasons why we still have a comic called 2000AD and that is Joe Dredd, I am the Law man.

So, I was thinking what about a tournament to celebrate the mega epics and long stories in the world of the toughest lawman around Judge Dredd.

Now the idea is to have a tournament where we choose our favourite epic or long-running story. The qualification criteria must be 4 or more episodes.  I will set up a list and only the stories in the list qualifies. The other criteria are only Dredd stories in the prog and no spin-offs (only Judge Dredd stories)

So, what do you think is it something that you guys would like be part of and if so do you agree on the qualification criteria? Last question a top 10 or 20 tournament?

How does it work?

1. You select your top 20 series which appeared the prog since the legendary first issue published 26 February 1977 up until now (currently that will be prog 2190).

2. The only series not included is Judge Dredd. You can cast your vote for any Dredd-verse series, but our favourite lawman has an unfair advantage.

3. The shorts are all clubbed together so you do not vote for a single Future Shock or Terror Tale but for the whole shebang. The shorts published are: Future Shocks, Past Imperfect, Pulp Sci-Fi, Tales from Beyond Science, Tales of Telguuth, Terror Tales, Tharg's Thrillers, Tharg's Dragon Tales, Time Twisters, Twisted Tales, Vector 13, What If ?.

4. The following series although carrying the same title will be split. For example, Strontium Dog will have all stories featuring Johnny Alpha be clubbed under Strontium Dog (Alpha) and the rest will be clubbed under Strontium Dog (Feral).  Here is the list:

[Meg]

I will wrapping up the "The Rebellion Years Top 10 Series - Tournament" by the 30th of June. I will kick-off the "The Rebellion Years Top 10 Meg Series - Tournament" on the weekend of the 4th of July. The meg tourney will run for only 2 weeks I want to warp it up by the 19th of July.

I am planning on doing a "Galaxy's Greatest Top 10" next. The timing of this depends also when and what Colin wants to do next. I do not mind running this directly after the Meg one.

I just need some input regarding the different tourneys:

On the Meg tourney
1.    I will again exclude Judge Dredd as an option but not the Dredd movie-based series. I see this more as an alternative take on Dredd and not part of the Dredd-verse canon.
2.   I will split Anderson between the Dredd-verse canon and the Dredd movie-based canon.
3.   Additional exclusion will be any reprint material and that includes the floppies.

On the Galaxy tourney
1.   I will split Rogue Trooper in two voting options, Classic Rogue and Friday.
2.   I will also split Strontium Dog into Alpha and Feral as two options.
3.   The only exclusion will be again Judge Dredd

What is this about?

As we all know Rebellion has been the owner of 2000 AD since the beginning of the century. They have kept the publication running and maintained for the last two decades.  We have been blessed with some great stories brought to use by some ridiculously awesome talent.  Another fact that I am greatfull for is that during the current world crisis Rebellion kept on delivering the weekly thrills.

The premise is that you select your top 10 series that was published during the Rebellion Years.

When do we start?

Currently Colin is running a great tourney around the ultimate writers. If you do know about this and you have been hiding under a rock or have been holidaying in the resorts of Alpha Centauri just follow the link: https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=46503.msg1029915#msg1029915

As soon as ultimate tourney is done I will kick-off the top 10 rebellion one.


For how long?

I am open to suggestions, but I was thinking around 2 – 3 weeks to allow you to cast your votes.

How does it work?


1. You select your top 10 series during the Rebellion Years. This is from Prog 1174 publish on 5 January 2000 up until prog 2185 publish on 10 June 2020.

4. We are working on a point system that follows the Formula 1 Point System: Points are awarded to drivers and teams based on where they finish in a race. The winner receives 25 points, the second-place finisher 18 points, with 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points for positions 3 through 10. So quite simple only 10 series will be allocated points, but nothing stops you from listing your top 79 series.

[First Blood]

This collection of Dredd stories is a period where I completely forgot about the existence of 2000AD and all its wonders. This was for me one of the better recent collection (or case files).  This covers prog 1276 to 1301 and The Meg 4.07 to 4.13

This compilation also proves yet again what a great (awesome, excellent etc.) writer John Wagner is. He can write the long game and the short game very effectively. He can write deep stories but also a story with touch of comedy (or a satire).

The highlights:

First Blood – Here we are introduced to a new villain which best Dredd but as we all know Dredd will get his main. The villain will surely return but as we all know Dredd will be the winner (do anyone know when the villain returned in the prog?).  The story is by Alan Grant and the art is the beautiful painted by John Burns.

Leaving Rowdy – This story is where Dredd gives-up his apartment for Rico. Now what makes this story special is that the art is done by Dredd maestro Carlos Ezquerra. The worse part for me is that I realized that this is one of his last works that I have not seen he has done, and we will never experience new work from this great man.  And yes, the story is great as well masterfully told as always by John Wagner.

It is Déjà vu all over Again Again – This is one of the funniest and stupidest Dredd stories I have read. The basic premise is that a group of Morons from the Moronian Sect are trying too takeover a Hottie House takeaway to negotiate the release of their members held in captivity. The art is done by one of my favorite artist Cam Kennedy and John Wagner is again providing the script.

Block Courts – Again we have Cam on pictures and John on words. This is a great one-shot where Dredd is on Block Court duty. 

Sin City – If you are looking for one reason why you must get this volume then this is the story. It is for me very much a story that is the forerunner for Chaos Day but on a smaller scale. John Wagner provides the script in this 11-part story. Art is done by the excellent Kev Walker. It is just a same that we do not see his work in the prog/meg anymore. Sin City, a mobile entertainments platform had hitched up within Mega-City waters. A detachment of Mega-City judges had been sent to investigate the disappearance of a spy, under pretence of policing the city. Orlok is one of the main villains in the story.

Blood and Duty – This is one John Wagner's more emotional stories staring Dredd's niece Vienna. Colin MacNeil is on art duties here; and this is something I really missed about his current art and it is his ability to do his own colouring (or rather paint his work).

Citizen Sump – I always wondered what happened to Otto Sump and this is the story on his last days in the great Meg. This is again a wonderful story by John Wagner and some great art by John Higgins.


My verdict 5/5

[Dredd]

Another good solid prog with a good cover by the cover-master Cliff Robinson.

Dredd – This is another one-shot and what a great little short by Niemand again. Niemand is becoming a great Dredd storytelling droid. Great to see the return of Carl Critchlow. His last work I believe was also on a Dredd story in the 40th Anniversary Special.

Survival Geeks – This is getting better as the story unfolds. This geekdom and nerddom at its best. Googe art is helps driving the story.

Skip Tracer – Still continuing its path. Much better than the previous run of Skip. The story is now really getting into action and Nimrod is starting to ply all his cards.

Aquila – The highlight of the prog yet again. A combination of great story telling with great art. I like the way that history is used to drive the narrative.

Hersey – Cannot say how great Fraser's art is but now the story is also pickup up and we get a clearer picture of what Hersey is trying to do and who some of the villains are.

I am currently reading Dr Mesmer's Revenge and I just want to know if Carlos Cruz is the same artists who did a stint on the Dan Dare strip for the New Eagle? What other work did he do as well, anything in Battle?
