Okay so I know I'm going to have to get to my own answer in this, but I thought I'd ask the question and see how others think. Bare with me if you will.

Wake's post yesterday about Skreemer art being available sent to up to the attic to dig out my well read (and in one case signed) copies of the comic. I absolutely love it. I had genuinely been doing a search for some that very morning along with other things, while planning my next eBay fund raising sales to try to work out a target amount.

So anyway having an open field I decided to get my request for a piece in straight away, to give myself the best chance of getting the best piece and there hangs my dilemma. Unlike the Red Seas piece I reserved there's no such thing as the definitive Skreemer page for me there's so much going on in the story. Normally I don't go for a big splashy piece I go for a bit of story, or moments in that story that matter to me, or even a piece that has some representation of the elements of the story I like.

In this case I just can't find that piece (on a side note, funny how the mind plays tricks on you. Before getting the books out I had a few pages in mind quite clearly. It turned out they were composites of different pages, put together in my head to make the perfect page!). So I then turned to thinking should just go for a nice big splash or semi splash of Veto (for those that know the comics) as he dominates the thing so much... then I got stuck as it was well past my bedtime and I needed to sleep on it... so all that needless waffle leaves me with the question.

What do people here go for. A bit of story, or a great single image of a character or event?

Had to come back and answer this question ...... Time Travel

Its all about Time Travel for me .... when i buy a certain page , it transports me back to the first time i saw it , which was usually a saturday morn in a day gone by .... yes some artist are better and more expensive than others , that does not mean a cheap piece of artwork can not work the same magic ....

I am currently in 1984 .... so the broadband is very slow ...so have fun guys ...

Greg M has this pretty well covered but I'll still add my thoughts...

For me, it starts with the artist.  Some artists I'd love anything by (as in I'd settle for a single decent example of their work - O'Neill and Bolland, pretty much), a few artists I'd take pretty much all I can handle (McCarthy & Cam Kennedy being my main weaknesses) and others I look for a good representative pairing of the artist with the character(s) I associate most with them (Ewins Bad Co., Ezquerra Strontium Dog, etc.).  For the latter group, given a choice (money, availability, patience) I'll wait until I come across a page that jumps out at me for whatever reason; I've picked up some great splash pages as well as pages that crackle with wonderful dialogue.  In the end, there are always far too many memorable images, scenes or stories and far too few opportunities to buy the original artwork associated with these, but when you find a page that really resonates with you, you know it.

Looking at my art collection it's really hard to pick a few favourites as the diversity of the artwork (the styles, characters, stories, pages - and panels and the details with those) are what makes this such a fascinating and infuriatingly moreish habit.

One other thing I'll say is that with contemporary art, I really miss the lack of dialogue - as much a part of the artwork as the brushstrokes on the page.  Some things stand up perfectly well on their own without dialogue (the McCarthy Walking Dredd page I have is fantastic in this respect) but others just feel a bit flat without the chat.

I very much agree with ming about the importance of dialogue in terms of owning original art - it's that glorious synthesis of text and image that makes the medium what it is. And speaking of glorious images, here's the Black Hawk page I got recently on ebay, and have just got round to scanning in:

I would say that no collector could answer you straight on this one Colin!

There are so many factors to consider it can wreck your head a bit, but for me it comes down to the following:

- Nostalgia (hey, you're talkin to someone who bought a G1 Soundwave Transformer on EBay last night)
- The artist (each to their own on this)
- The 'X-Factor' (sometimes a page just has that certain something, and if you consider it cool then go for it!)

This pretty much sums it up for me too! I've been thinking on how to answer this question for about 30 minutes but, ultimately, it boils down to 'it depends'! Sometimes it's a story page, sometimes a splash or cover, sometimes a memorable panel.  I have pages for all of these reasons and more...

I'll add my vote to that as well. My art collection is all about pages that mean something special to me, and i wouldnt buy a page for any other reason. Makes no real difference as to whether its a stunning page, or a 'boring' one, to me. If its special to me, for whatever reason, then im glad to give it a good home.

And regarding what Colin said, when he said he had a perfect page in mind, but upon tracking that issue down the page was actually misremembered, and was in fact a composite of several! Yep, thats happened to me!

Sweet mother of JESUS, that Black Hawk page looks waaaayyy better than it did on EBay.
I'm gonna have to ask you lot some advice on obtaining a (cost effective) scanner at some stage.

Great piece Greg.

I've just this week bought a hand-held 'wand' scanner that cost just under £40 - 900dpi. It hasn't arrived yet so haven't had a chance to play but will certainly let you know how it goes...

That Black Hawk page is indeed superb. Pure Belardinelli, that.

moly

Think for me it's a mix of artist and character so I got a nice double page leigh gallagher, talbot and Robinson

moly

Thanks to jd31 for the Robinson and dale for the Talbots and if I ever have money again I've got my eyes on a few more pieces

malak brood

Love that Leigh Gallagher page, I think he is very underrated......the detail in his work is very old skool....I have a swamp thing commission he did years back, so I know the quality.  Great pick up, slight envy.....

I can now report that the hand-held wand scanner is pretty awesome (my IT skills however are shite - I managed to delete the entry completely off CAF, simply by trying to replace the photo with the new scan)

That's two images stitched together using microsoft ice!

That is pretty ace! Do you need a steady hand? As I shake all over the place (I can never work out how I get a smooth inking line).
It's a joke. I was joking.

Good stuff! (but deleting a image by mistake is the nightmare scenario, isnt it).
Ill have a looksee at what other scan's you but up - of course, but that looks pretty darn spot-on, and maybe a wand is a worthwhile investment, and the way forward

(Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say - and ive made do with scanning from a A4 scanner with pretty good results, but if the art is on fairly rigid board then it can become problematic to get a good image - a wand would bypass all that)

The only problem I had was the first time I tried, the art moved.  I was expecting to have to scan VERY slowly and steadily but it was quite quick and easy

Pets are not art! Should not be scanning animals and putting them on CAF!
