Title: The big fat COLOURING thread
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 16 May, 2012, 09:10:28 AM
...that will hopefully be big and fat. I thought it was high time there was a dedicated thread to colouring and colourists and COLOURING ADVICE generally. Any opportunity to rub it into the face of Americans that it's spelt differently.

To kick us off here are three pages from THE AMAZING Massacre for Boys with lines from the astounding Steven Denton who's actually A RIDICULOUSLY RIDICULOUS colourist in his own right. No pressure!

A great idea for a thread Owen, and a damn good start too. Did you colour these pages then?

Will throw a few things up tonight when I get home from work - been colouring my old Fractal Friction compadre James Corcoran's new 'Kid Tiger' strip recently, so I could show those. Plus I've been colouring something by Dave Hitchcock with a possible view to collaborating on a strip (although it's looking unlikely now due to deadlines changing, but never mind - I've still got a sample splash page I coloured). Anyway, nice one  :)

Yeah - I coloured them - got me potential work with Time Bomb and Afterlife, Inc. as well :O Wasn't expecting that!!!

Your colours are an inspiration Mr Soffe sir, the Fractal Friction stuff used to blow my eyes off!

Here's some for Grant Perkins (not sure if he put this in his thread or not)

You mean like a general colouring thread? ;)

Maybe this one could be dedicated to actual samples (which we could all discuss) rather than just a general discussion? I like the idea of gathering them together in one place.

Here are the first couple of pages of Kid Tiger (drawn by James Corcoran):

Ooh lovely job, all of you. I especially like your work on that Perkins Ghostbusters pinup.

And mgb, wonderful stuff on James' strip - love to see a couple of my favorite artists work together. But although Kid Tiger has some lovely whiskers, they're nothing compared to the whiskers of a certain character you recently colored... :D

CrazyFoxMachine! That first example is outstanding!! In fact, everything on this page is!!

I was tipping my hat to Grimm the other day on his 10 minute portraits. (I've since been noseying through his DeviantArt, which only deserves yet more metaphorical hat tipping!)

I'd like to see your colours on his ink (ooh err!!) Could be awesome!

Wish I could draw/colour... Hopefully I make some progress with my writing and maybe I could wrangle you guys into working on something with me one day! :D

Ah, thanking you chief, that's very nice of you to say. 'Muted vintage tones' are precisely what I was going for, so I'm very happy to hear you describe them as such. I have to say your colouring is coming on leaps and bounds - that Grant Perkins one is working like a dream (and I'm not just saying that cos it's your birthday).

Tom your colouring is like... RIDICULOUS.

I love the muted tones and the VERY SLIGHT GRAINY TEXTURE. Also all the flashy glowy bits and blurry bits. Really well done - subtle enough to not overwhelm the lines. There was a period where I wanted to e-mail you everything to colour! :O

Just signed up to colour Dave Hitchcock's latest project 'Paradise Mechanism'. Well, first I was on board, then not because of the deadline change, then Dave talked me into it. Gonna have to do 26 pages by the end of June, plus put in a token presence at my full time day job of course. It's gonna be a tough month!

But on the plus side (and I think I'm ok to announce this as Dave has mentioned it on FB), the strip is going to feature in David Lloyd's new ipad-only comics project. Yep, that's David Lloyd of 'V' fame. Shit me!!  :o

And I was nervous about 48 pages for September - ! (actually that's still quite a lot and no David Lloyd in sight) - well done Soffe you're a living legend good luck to yer.

I've recently been experimenting with A PHOTOSHOP AUTO FLATTING TOOL. <-- hmmmm

I use the BPelt plugin.

It's pretty useful - though the results are never perfect and require quite a bit of cleaning up. It's only worthwhile for specific drawing styles though - for open lines or scratchy rendering with lots of crosshatching it's probably not too much use.

If I were to try and give an example - it's probably good for Philip Bond's lineart, not so much for, say, Steve Yeowell.

Nice one CFM, another winner. You've got a grand littel team going on there  :)

That project I mentioned a few weeks back - colouring a strip by Dave Hitchcock - well first I was colouring it, then I wasn't but now I am again. Basically, the deadline was brought forward to the end of June, and I really didn't think I could colour 26 pages in a month. But then I thought, f*ck it, it's a chance to work alongside Dave and David Lloyd too, and I went for it. Never worked so hard in my life - full time day job then colouring every night until 12pm-1am since the beginning of the month. The end is in sight now too, so I'm chuffed I said yes. Pretty pleased with the results, and this is my favourite page (if it looks rough at all please remember to bear in mind that each page was done in a single night!)

When I first got access to a computer back in 1997 I tried out colouring. Of course I turned to 2000ad as my inspiration and coloured some of my favourite artists for practice. Here are a couple of the ones I did (I have lost most of them now).

Looking at these I think there would be a market for 'colorised' classic 2000ad.

Yeah for '97 that's really good actually - I mean, if you look at some of the abhorrent prog colouring at the time this is comparatively a masterclass in subtlety. The first panel of the first one and the fourth panel of the second are particularly effective.

I used to practice on old prog pages when I first experimented with colouring - really not certain about the idea of them all being recoloured though. I don't mind say, Gary Caldwell on Hook Jaw recently in Strip - because there was a reason for that really - but recolouring all old progs could be considered a little gratuitous.

Hmm. It used to frustrate me when I was trying to collect old 2000AD reprints about - Jesus! - twenty-something years ago that they'd all been recoloured (first the Eagle reprints, then the erroneously named Quality Comics). I guess 'cos they were intended for the American market.

After something of a break I'm appreciating being able to pick up the various 'Files', etc reprints in their intended, glorious monochrome.

Nice colouring, though. I could imagine there's many a person less grumpy than me that would enjoy recoloured classics.

Look at painters - I find that trying to create painting effects in computer colouring gives you your own style.

Great colourists that spring to mind are Matt Hollingsworth (who did Preacher) and Chris Blythe (who does a lot of Dredd. Its worth copying their stuff to try to work out how tey do it.

Hope that helps

I kind of take the veiw that it's the lightsources that  bring the dynamic to the colouring.
If you approach it that way it might help to get the look you are after.

Thanks  :),I'm trying to think light, had about 3 attempts....I'm that much off a noob I have know idea what a psd breakdown is  :-[

One other thing i could do with knowing is what brushes to colour with?

Right, had another crack, still trying to get used to gradients and it's a bit scruffy close up but I feel like I'm learning  :)

Don't be afraid to be a bit more subtle with the colours - and if the light is coming from the left as the shading suggests, then this should be reflected in the background as well. Not bad not bad though - !

The link below refers to lighting for photography or film but is just as useful a technique when emulated to your color art. It's more or less the principle I use on all my colour stuff nowadays.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_lighting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_lighting)

Lighting setups was one of my favourite tasks when I worked in video games. Loved it.

Sketch with tones in B/W.
Flat colours then added with filters.
Lastly final art with light overlays and detail.

Yeah there's a tad too much green on that - and the shadows on Dredd are a little severe. I'd also avoid using such large texture brushes on the background there. Some of the more subtle shadows on the background blocks are good though - ! I've always been very nervous about coloured lighting so you've put a brave foot forward there - continue experimenting!

Yeah that'll do it - you were colouring on a trackpad before?!? Bloody hell that takes some doing. Thanks to the very kind Jon Taylor I'm catching up colouring work (my Bamboo broke last week) with my first ever Intuos :D Which is essentially the same although larger and it recognises "tilting" on the pen and has a DIGITAL RUBBER WHICH IS AMAZING.

The yellow bit on top of the pen & touch pen is a 'rubber' as well- I never realised at first. Once I found out by accident, I was ridiculously pleased about the whole concept. Stupid, but it's more natural than clicking back and forth between functions.

Here's my first attempt colouring using the Bamboo, Erasmus panel 7.
Got home from work tonight and the first thing I did was see if the tip was a digital rubber after reading CFM's post :) Definitely easier to colour with than the track pad.

IT IS?! Well I feel stupid. I just normally made one of the clickers a rubber, which in the hours since getting the Intuos which (for various reasons) doesn't have clickers on it's pen - I've found that it must have been my "ideal method" because pressing E or using the (still awesome) digi rubber seem much slower to me. It depends how much you've got your hands on the keyboard for the whole process though I suppose - I think I became a bit dependent on navigating around with the tablet.

And Flip - like the armour but the console has these strange patches of dark on it - how are you laying down your flats?
Title: Re: The big fat COLOURING thread
Post by: radiator on 06 August, 2013, 08:33:59 AM
Yes, it is.

If you want to work at any kind of decent speed you'll need to be relying heavily on keyboard shortcuts.

My left hand is permanently hovering over the space bar for the 'hand' tool anyway, and other shortcuts are absolutely vital unless you want to spend half the time clicking on icons and scroll bars.
Title: Re: The big fat COLOURING thread
Post by: radiator on 06 August, 2013, 08:38:47 AM
Not to mention essential modifier keys like Option, Alt and Control.

Once you have the tools you use the most committed to muscle memory you'll barely even need to look at the tool palette again or break workflow.

I don't really have a huge amount of use for the erase tool in any case.
Title: Re: The big fat COLOURING thread
Post by: radiator on 06 August, 2013, 08:47:23 AM
Just read your post back and realised you're talking about the side buttons on the pen.

I always have these - and the touch panels on the tablet - permanently disabled as I just found that I constantly pressed them accidentally and they were more trouble than they're worth. But then that's probably more down to the weird, clawlike grip I hold the pen in!

Most people I know just hold Cntrl and click and use the slider to quickly adjust brush size.

I got into the habit of using the bracket keys - not really that inconvenient for as they are near the + and -, which I use a lot in conjunction with Command make for easy zooming in and out.

Other incredibly useful shortcuts I find are Command-D (deselect), D (set FG/BG colour swatches to Black/White), X (swap between FG/BG swatch), Command-H (hide/unhide guides/paths/selections), Hold Alt while using brush (eye dropper), F (cycle between view modes), Tab (toggle tools/palettes on/off), Command-U for to bring up Hue/Sat adjustment. The number keys for quickly setting layer opacity are really handy also.

There are many, many more - but they're burned so deep into my brain it's actually hard to consciously remember what they are.

I hate contextual-menu-clicks. Despise 'em. I force myself to use it for 'Recent Fonts' in Illustrator because applying different font styles is a pain in AI, and occasionally to add a stroke to a selection in Photoshop.

All these fooking shortcuts, I thought computer colouring was supposed to be easy :) Once again I'm truly grateful to the board(for all I know about computer lettering and colouring) as trial and error teaches me very little.I take it that these shortcuts are for PS, I've been using MS5 for colouring the Erasmus strip.
CFM, as I am always trying to beat my deadlines with the
two panels a week I'm drawing l basically flat in the main colours I'm using and add some darker tones on top. When I took over the strip I decided that I would do it in colour but only use  flat muted colours. The dark tones on the console were created using the burn and dodge tools.

It occurs to me I might still have the side button somewhere. If I do I'll send it on to you, though you'll still need to find a new sheath to accommodate it (the last one basically disintegrated).

It's not just you, I do this too (especially annoying are the sudden and unexpected zooms from leaning on the sliders on an Intuous 3). This is why I just took the side button off in the end.

I recently took the plunge on a Cintiq and the "pro-pens" or whatever they call 'em to justify the price, don't seem to allow you to remove the side buttons, so I've been educating myself to actually use them. Getting there slowly, but Jesus, it's not natural, is it?

The Cintiq 13HD by the way, for whatever it's worth, I whole-heartedly endorse. It's even nicely portable. And much, much easier to stay within the lines. :)

Really? You can't disable the buttons through Preferences?

I think the side buttons and touch panels and things are for people doing very limited types of work - I find with my workflow that I use far too many shortcuts to be able to map them all, so just stick to the keyboard for everything.

Oh yeah, sorry, that was a little misleading, you can disable them of course. I meant I always preferred to physically remove them on an Intuous partly to use the stylus more like a pencil and partly because of corrupting preference files or frequently changing work machines.

My ex art director swore by the side buttons as he used his Wacom in place of a mouse. I fully agree about the keyboard shortcuts though, not sure I could work any other way.

So do I - I don't even have a mouse on my main work computer - using a tablet right now writing this post. Don't know how it is on PC, but on a Mac I can do everything I need to using Cntrl click. Way faster and more accurate for me than using a mouse.

Got to love the tablet buttons.  Well... I have to, anyway.
I used to use the keyboard shortcuts exclusively - especially the space bar as a move tool - until I developed RSI despite having a pretty ergonomic work area, which my physio blamed largely on having an arm half-outstretched all the time while the other arm is bent in towards the body (holding the pen).  After that palaver (although three years later treatment continues), I had to re-examine how I work if I wanted to continue doing so, and the first thing that I did was accept that there's a big difference between what is easiest/more efficient and what I am simply too lazy and/or truculent to change in my workflow.  Even now I find myself reaching for hotkeys mapped to the tablet buttons, which just goes to show what a terrible habit it is to break - there's buttons literally right there beside my fingertips and I'm stretching all the way over there instead.  Further proof that I don't work particularly sensibly is that I still don't just use the bloody toolbars so I can forgo using the keyboard/tablet buttons entirely...

On the plus side, there's a lot less clumsy opening of filters or whatnot when I hit the wrong key accidentally, as used to happen all the time, though it would be nice to be able to remap the zoom to the touchstrips in Manga Studio (EX4).

Here's a webcomic I was colouring last year finally up and running:

Smitten - a manga webcomic. Not happy with all my colouring on this - some of it is atrociously muddy and I probably wouldn't do it the way I did then now if you get my drift. A few months can change everything!

A piece of colouring I did for a friend a few months back.  He had been commissioned to do some work for a kickstarter and was uncertain about his skills at colouring.  He asked me to do a colour version of the picture in addition to his own so he could offer options to his client.  As I was watching my friend doing his coloured version over a share screen I used most of his colour choices but did it in my own style.  The client did end up choosing my version, but I just enjoyed colouring my friends artwork.

Lovely work Pictsy. Very 'painterly', which I much prefer over the polished airbrush look that some computer coloured stuff has. ;)

That's luvverly - very Dave Taylor actually. I'd watch out for over-brownification generally though - unless that's the specified colour for the roboto it doesn't hugely stand out. It's a great job though - great reflections and well-judged shadows. The clouds are particularly striking I could stare at them for hours.

More Pictsy colouring!

Thanks Darren.  Glad you like it.

Thanks as well CFN.  I adore clouds and always try and do them justice.

I was pleased with the various highlights in this image and especially the moon.

I don't have much in the way of work I've coloured for other people - I haven't really been in demand to do it.  Would be cool to, though.

Anyway, here is another.  Lineart is by the same artist.  He was bored one day so I told him to draw a picture and this is what he drew.  He didn't really like it but I thought it was interesting and did a really quick colouring job on it.

That's definitely got a very eighties dayglo feel to it - especially as you've uploaded the CMYK file which in most browsers appears a lot harsher than how it'll have appeared as you were doing it.

That last panel is the best here, like the textures there and the gradient orange through red and the use of purples and blues on the vehicle Dredd's standing on.

The main issue throughout though is one of flatness. These feel more like base flat colours than finished ones. Obviously you have to work within what you like - not asking for endless glows and everything shining or anything but like the ground-to-sky in the last panel a simple gradient can work wonders. Particularly on the grey walls in panels 1 & 3 - the inking implies that they're quite grotty and worn but the single bright grey tone is quite distracting and seems out of place. The same with Dredd's shoulder pads - the inking implies changing textures.

Now here is Flint's colouring on his own work which is a pretty good guide for what he has in mind:

(http://www.multiversitycomics.com/wp-content/themes/zillionlabs/images/timthumb.php?src=http://multiversitystatic.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2014/08/judge-dredd-megazine-351-henry-flint.jpg&q=95&w=593&zc=1&a=t)

and I'm not implying you copy this entirely I'm just saying if you pay attention to the leather and the shoulder pads particularly there's a bit more variability at play there that's always worth giving a go.

Good effort though - don't be afraid to go into more detail!

Agree with Owen, these look like flats...but(!) I quite like the colour choices and, I can see this suiting an artist with a less detailed, gritty style.

TBH, it's better form to put the image up inline (as part of the post) rather than a link people need to click through to. In isolation, one instance isn't a big deal, but it would work against the accessibility of the thread if more people started doing it...

Use a free service like Photobucket to upload. It'll offer you several options for sharing an image but if you copy the one that says IMG, you can just paste the entire line of code into your post and the image should appear.

Tonight's colour practice, once again lineart from the Colour like Carlos book by the legendary and much missed Carlos Ezquerra. Have included my Flats for comparison.(https://i.imgur.com/1HKsB8R.jpg)(https://i.imgur.com/J2dc9or.jpg)
