BPP - no no - you're absolutely right - it's me that's in the wrong. Nothing you said is at all problematic, and it's not as if you're splitting hairs at this point. Admins - feel free to remove/edit my posts or admonish me in any way you see fit.

And Jim's right too - I should definitely be banned.

Quote from: BPP on Today at 06:55:02 PMAnd Funt can you remove the false quotation box, I find that a particularly bad faith display and beneath you.

Well, you perhaps hold me in too high esteem. But - look closely - it says "BPP translated in Funt's head" - I'm not sure I could make it any more obvious that it's not a word-for-word quote. Nobody else seems confused, there.

I'm glad to hear you're not a blanket misogynist. I am incredibly wary, though, of anyone jumping on the "Ed was bullied to death by witches who must now be punished" bandwagon. So, y'know, you should probably reel that in - or start up a thread on that particular topic (although I'm not really suggesting anyone does that here because it would be a complete shit-show).

[Responding to IP]

We definitely need new talent and new content circling the Rebellion nest.

I'm not the target audience for Monster Fun - but my step-mum buys it for my three nephews. I don't know the numbers, but I sometimes imagine that 2000 AD is a sort of niche, prestige product - and it needs supported by other content - which may feed into it later. While Regened (eventually) flopped, the idea behind it (trying to reach a wider audience) is eminently supportable.

So, glad to see this effort being made to expand Reb's horizons.

Quote from: BPP on Today at 06:44:16 AMHi Funt, it's absolutely nothing to do with comicsgate. Whilst I do think identity politics is the enemy of class struggle I don't think I have to be inappropriately politically labelled just because I look at a list of creators and think 'Christ, nothing for me there'.

I have to take you at your word - it's only fair. It's odd, though - because when people aren't abundantly clear about what they mean, then I use inference. So, my in-head translation of what you said, I'll add below.

Quote from: BPP translated in Funt's headWomen can't draw, and they hounded Ed Piskor to his doom.

I honestly don't understand why Rebellion hire women. Women's work has never connected with Rebellion's existing base (of men) and women don't belong in the UK scene.

Oh Grud. Could you not bring your comicsgate bs in here? Please.

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 02 May, 2024, 10:42:18 PMI seem to remember the Happy Mondays making their way into a Judge Death story in some Dredd special or other. 'You're bending my cantaloupe, man! Call the Judges!'
The 1995 cover is amazing - way better than Joy Hogg, Millar Slade and Fleisher Friday deserve.

Oh, wait - it's Luke Kirby! I thought one of the Inspiral Carpets had somehow sneaked onto the cover for a minute, there.

That one's Sean Phillips, surely?

Indeed. Fumbled. Sean Phillips it was.

To be fair, it wasn't some capricious whim — the old annuals weren't selling, so it made sense to try something new. Unfortunately, the yearbooks didn't sell, either.

Well, yes, if fairness and facts are your bag then my casual approach to journalism won't quite cut the mustard.

As regards tracking them down for a read, I'm not sure I could fairly recommend them. Here's what they contain, in amazing spreadsheet technicolour:

21 - 2000 AD Yearbooks

You think you know about wraparounds? Fuggedaboudit! You know nothing, Jon Snow! Erm, anyway - at some point it was determined by Thargnanimous that Annuals were just meh, and they had to be replaced by Yearbooks. Basically, annuals, but with floppy gatefold covers. In some ways these gift us an insight into why people go on about how bad the 90s were for Tharg's Organ.

2000 AD Yearbook 1992 (1991; Dermot Power) - this one is sorta special in that it's not just a gatefold wraparound, but it's circular - so you could have it repeat forever, with Tao de Moto there. You can tell this isn't quite golden-age, as Fr1day and Feral Jackson are holding court alongside the more established fizzogs.

---

2000 AD Yearbook 1993 (1992; Dermot Power; But is it Art?) - this is a fun one, with our smelly friend Brigand Doom stalking Dredd. Nerd alert! Anderson's badge should say "PSI"!

---

2000 AD Yearbook 1994 (1993; Mick Austin; Spaced Out!) - a real flag of the 90s here, with Sam Slade wielding an automatic rifle, Hammerstein for some reason monochrome, DR looking like a little boy, also there's an actual little boy holding onto Tyranny's foot - and The Clown is given more screen space than one might expect from a historical context. Anyway - this was the 90s. Too much acid, not enough editorial control.

---

2000 AD Yearbook 1995 (1994; Mick Austin) - quite a clever idea, with the characters appearing out of the  working art, but Babe Race 2000? Brigand again? What's Tharg done with his hair? Oi vey!

Next: gates, folded...

Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 01 May, 2024, 02:35:30 PMAre you saying that as soon as a hoover bag (the product) is placed inside a vacuum cleaner, the bag ceases to exist?

Plot for Judges tv show: Sov dimension warp technology has been placed inside vacuum cleaners so you "Never have to change the bag!", as everything you vacuum is now sent to a different Earth. Naturally, the people in that dimension have had enough of 1. being TAD-nuked into oblivion years ago and 2. having some dust, random bits of cereal and cat hairs dropped on them.

I'm glad you brought that up. To get us back on-topic, it's worth pointing out that vacuum is used to adhere protective tape to the front surface of lens blanks (y'know, for spectacles) before the grinding and surfacing process.
