Why haven't we seen Sampson produce much artwork for either 2000AD or the Megazine?

His art is probably the best depiction of Anderson, using celebrities as the models, such as Madonna, Kylie, and Liz Hurley. Lets see more!!!

No disrespect to Arthur Ranson who is currently doing a great job with Anderson, but its just not the same.

When can we see his work back on the pages of the galaxy's greatest comic?

Noo!o! Copying models out of fashion magazines just makes for flat expressionless pretty zombies. Not the sparky wisecracking _character_ that Anderson really is. It's hard to argue against Sampson's use of celebrities when Ranson's current depiction looks like it's been traced from photos too, but neither Sampson or Ranson have come close to bringing Anderson to life in the same way as Bolland, or even Ewins tracing Bolland!

Seeing Frazer Irving's Judge Karyn in the Meg last month, I reckon he'd be the droid to do Anderson justice.

The reason we haven't seen his work is because he is without doubt the crappest artist in the history of 2000AD - simple, really!

And there we have it folks: reader opinion in a nutshell.
1- "artist A is great i luv luv luv him why o why don't we see more?"
2- "O i didn't like A mind you he's no worsae than B but i can live with it but how about C?"
3-"a was shit. hate him, wouldn't date him"

just apply this all artists and whallop, the debate to end all debates.

Nathan,

Hi!

Sorry mate but you are wrong!
Brian Bolland based Anderson on Debbie Harry of Blondie fame. He even admits to this!

See the similarity?

So Brian is a naughty boy too!

The long version goes - Sampson is crap because he traces his characters from fashion magazines, and cannot design anything AT ALL from his own imagination.  His cbackgrounds are often non-existent.  Probably the low point (amongst many!), was when he had to draw an old person - his solution? - trace another supermodels face, but draw lines randomly all over the face!

As someone else pointed out Ranson does something similar, but at least the finished product looks smarter than Sampson's clashing flat and indistinct watercolours!

Don't worry Fraze, I don't think you'll ever whip up as much hate as Sampson does...not unless you start spending too much time using Kays catalogue for reference!! :)

~But while Bolland and to a greater extent Ranson use photo ref, they do not:
A) cut pictures out of magazines,
B) paint over them (badly),
C) put a few washes of colour in for background
D) call it comic book art

Did you know that John Wagner based Dredd on an obscure East European comic character?

Called Vladstov the Enforcer.

It was written by Sergei Mostov just after the Second World war. Sergei was born in Poland. 1912 - 1961.

Following the hardship of the war, he created a character who could administer instant justice. It was actually a satirical attack on fascism and communism.
Vladstov wore a leather uniform and rode a bike. He even wore a helmet not that dissimilar to Dredd's!

I have some old photocopies of the stories which have illustrations too.
He really does look like Dredd.

Anyone interested?

O Lucky Stevie!

i can't remember which u.s. comics journal that i read this interview with brian bolland in, but according to the man himself used to frequent porn shops in order to use fetish magazines as reference material for judges' uniforms (eg, creasing, highlights, etc)!

i like sampson artwork a lot, personally, but agree that there are other artists better suited to drawing cass's adventures.

now let's not even consider marc wigmore's awful work on the hershy strip for the megazine (made even more umpalletable by the wonderful work by kevin cullen on her earlier megazine stories).
