Quote from: Richard on Today at 05:50:43 PMdo you need to get a new model release form every time?

If the contract existed with a company that's no longer a legal entity, or no longer the holder of the rights to the material, then it's possible that the contract itself might be void. Obviously, I'm not a lawyer, but if there's even a question mark on that score, given the very limited audience for this material, I could see why any potential publisher would give it a miss.

No one wants to get tied up in a legal mess over material that's never going to yield more than a marginal profit, at best...

EDIT TO ADD: Also, IPC/Fleetway were pretty rubbish about issuing contract/release forms to dot the 'T's and cross the 'I's on this stuff. See: the Zenith/Hilary Robinson messes.

(Also, not a high value property, and neither Kev nor I would ever make a fuss about it, but we were told '"The Inspectre" is a Dredd series so you don't own the rights to it.' I'm not sure that would stand up in court without a piece of paper with our signatures on the bottom. Like I said, their legal department was pretty rubbish—Games Workshop certainly made sure we'd signed over our rights on penalty of the forfeiture of our immortal souls.)

Quote from: Steve Green on 21 April, 2024, 01:01:43 PMHarrogate is more central, but that extra distance from SW London + not having the central area to escape to swung it for me

I can definitely see that — I don't drive, so it doesn't make much difference to me. Although I'm coming from the Midlands, LNER run a train that goes direct from King's Cross to Harrogate three or four times a day. I catch it at Grantham, but it's quite a civilised journey, and reasonably fast up the east coast electrified line... :)

Quote from: Richard on 21 April, 2024, 10:31:58 AM"the company has net assets of £334.6 thousand"

Yes, but a quick scan of previous accounts shows that this is basically the "Fixed Assets" column which has ~£300K sitting in it every year, and very little actual activity in the rest of the accounts from year to year. Although the fixed assets aren't detailed, that has the definite whiff of a property about it.

Quote from: PsychoGoatee on 20 April, 2024, 11:56:37 PMI don't like it when these upstarts say stuff like that, I get you want to run wild, but Wagner rules. And he seems like such a cool guy too. Play nice!  :D

Nobody has a beef with John, but writers get understandably pissed off with the section of fandom that declares it's not 'canon' if Wagner didn't write it. To be fair, now that John writes so little Dredd they've largely fallen silent, but it was a definite thing back when he wrote Dredd stories on a more regular basis.

Quote from: Steve Green on 20 April, 2024, 05:12:47 PMIf there's any concrete info, they'd certainly be talking about it.

Basically, this. Jesus, Urko, how many times does someone need to tell you: "When there's something to say, you'll hear about it"...?

Quote from: Steve Green on 20 April, 2024, 05:26:46 PMTB is OK, but I preferred the Royal Armouries

Honestly, I don't — I always felt like something was going on elsewhere that I was missing when TB was in Leeds. Harrogate is engagingly compact... everytime someone messaged me to say they're in 'X' pub/bar/restaurant/hotel I'd Google-Map it and it'd be a five minute walk. The convention itself is well-organised and uses the layout effectively.

TL;DR — I much prefer the Harrogate incarnation. Hopefully, I'll see some of you there this year!

Oh... Lawless organiser Su Haddrell had a live online chat with Englishman in San Diego, Leonard Sultana last week and the conversation is now up on his YouTube channel.

Quote from: Colin YNWA on 20 April, 2024, 01:30:43 PMThe cool thing about Lawless I'm thinking is meeting folks from the board, so whose defo going (I'm defo not sure yet!)

I'm on the guest list, so I'll be there! Not tabling, so look for me in the bar or mooching around the smoking area (which is outside, behind the bar). I'll be there from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning.

If that doesn't put you off, nothing will.  :D

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 19 April, 2024, 04:50:21 PMAl Ewing [...] his body of work is contained, finite and done.

Although, the last time he talked to MOLCH-R for the thrill-cast, he said that he felt he wasn't done with Dredd.

IIRC, he kind of swallowed a remark he clearly wanted to make about not returning until Wagner retires, because he he didn't want to go through the endless "it's not canon if Wagner doesn't write it" shite that some 'fans' spew.

I hope he comes back, and I hope it doesn't take John 'officially' retiring to make that happen. Al wrote some genuinely fantastic Dredds, and I'd like to think he's not done yet.

Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 19 April, 2024, 12:38:18 PMDespite not being posted in since May '23, the Thought Police: Are we allowed to query 'woke'? thread has just been locked.

There may have been a change in the back-end code somewhere — it's not at all uncommon for forums of all kinds to lock inactive threads after a certain period of time. If more old/defunct threads start getting locked, we can probably infer that that's what this is, rather than some sinister thought-policing.

:)

I should probably have mentioned in the original post, for those that don't want/can't be bothered to click through to the link, that NBC isn't using "neo-Nazi" in the colloquial sense of "a bit more right wing than I am personally comfortable with" — they mean actual, proper, "Hitler was right" neo-Nazis. They're talking about accounts that specifically promote actual Nazi ideology.

They didn't include accounts that shared this sort of material but didn't explicitly endorse it (the "Hey, I'm just asking questions" type), nor general-purpose antisemitism/racism. This is 150 blue-ticked accounts with followers often in the hundreds of thousands literally praising and advocating Third-Reich-style Nazism.

I'll do it! I promise I would not use these powers for evil.

Promise.

Honest.

Well, maybe occasionally. But not much. Only a bit evil... now and then.

I quit Twitter last year, partly because the constant doomscrolling was doing me no good, but mainly because I noticed that the 'Trending' section was increasingly pushing right-wing content and talking points at me, in a manner that simply couldn't be based on algorithmic analysis of my own useage of the platform.*

It seemed very obvious to me that, under Musk, the platform was being used to advance an agenda that I simply couldn't support or be passively complicit in.

Well, it certainly hasn't got any better since I left. This, from NBC:

Verified pro-Nazi X accounts flourish under Elon Musk

We're far beyond "freedom of speech" and "hearing both sides". If you're still using Twitter/X, I'd urge you to reconsider.

*Mostly comic stuff, occasional frothing lefty rants.  :D

That does look like a Hondo uniform, so maybe it is Inaba.
