What regular Dredd characters have we not seen and may have potentially perished?

Mean machine and his son.
Judges karyn and Janus (although they've not been seen since the 90s have they)

I'll let you guys ponder

Prog / Prog 1978 - outer dark
23 April, 2016, 10:39:21 AM
Shame they didn't contine with the retro cover revamp theme - that would have been fun.

Cover - it's very pink and blue. Nice to see the title completely obscured, they should just remove it if they are going to cover it every week. It's ok I guess - a bit bland. I certainly wouldn't pick it up if I wasn't a reader already. However, the INJ's  inside on brink is great.

Dredd - lovely art from pj and Adam, this is probably my favourite work I've seen from pj Holden! The story is more of the same 1. resolution of cliffhanger/fight 2. Talking heads chat 3.cliffhanger that is some kind of shootout/explosion. As I mentioned in an earlier post I can't help but feel that a lot of Carroll's Dredds, although generally an interesting idea, seem to follow this formula and for me it means that all we actually get regarding plot is 3 pages of talking heads and then a cliffhanger. Also I still find a cliffhanger of an explosion or a shootout boring as we know what will happen. i found the plot idea was ok, just a bit slow.

Aquila finishes this issue thankfully, but with every silver lining there is a rain cloud and survival geeks begins another series. The art in both these series is not really to my taste and the stories seem laboured and lacking characters that I care about. Also I find the humour particularly misses, but that's me.

I am pleased to see that Slaine is back next issue.

Anyone know why one page of Liam Sharp's story is so lo-res? Is it intentional or just another really annoying oversight in a £25 book?

I am sure you lot will know.

I would really like to read some more collections of classic British comics from 2000AD creators or similar, but what is out there? I have read and enjoyed all the Hibernia stuff, and got the Rat Pack, Charley's War, Darkie's Mob and Major Easy collections. And have just ordered the Spider one. But what other collections am I missing?

Off Topic / The Old London Comic Shops
13 March, 2015, 11:57:47 AM
I was thinking about the comic shops that I used to go to in London when I was a kid. Here are some of my memories - anyone got any? It's going to be a bit of a ramble so hold on!

Forbidden Planet in Denmark street was great, it had a really exciting vibe to it and a big 2000ad presence. When they moved to the bigger shop it changed the atmosphere. I still went there but the staff just seemed less friendly and it was not as exciting. I remember them having loads of 2000ad art for sale including the massive Bisley ABC Warriors pages that just blew me away.

Fantasy Inn on Charing Cross Road was one of my favourites. It had a lot of independent US comics there was also where I found boxes of the Ninja Turtles series 2 cards which I bought, got my collection and then re sealed the packets and sold them in school for £2 a packet! It was '6 feet under the Book Inn' which had a selection of amazing masks above the main counter including the Predator. The guy who worked there was really nice, he always used to eat chicken mayonnaise kebabs from the kebab shop next door.

Paradise Alley was great for British comics. i used to go there and buy stacks of 1970s Beanos when I was about 10, and then later 2000ad and Scream (I bought all the Screams and specials for about £10). Everything was second hand so you could get Titan books for about £4. The guy who ran the shop was pretty scary and his general response to questions was 'No' or 'We don't have that'. He has slicked back hair and a leather Jacket. Upstairs was a record shop and it was even more creepy. I don't think they liked kids (or anyone) in the shop.

Comic Showcase Neal Street was the place to find something odd or bizarre. The staff were always really helpful there. I remember the downstairs having a stack of original art that was on sale - £40 for McMahon Sky chariots.

Fantastic Store in Portabello Road were also really friendly. I used to go there when I was into US comics and they had a great selection. I cant remember much about this place.

Gosh was, and is, great.

Mega City comics in Camden - I don't know why I used to go here, they were always really horrible. Last time I went I bought some Preacher back issues and they had hidden the newsstand price stickers under a mega city sticker. I took them back and they accused me of sticking the stickers on there. Grrrr.

Well  ... I have run out of steam! I'm sure I will think of some more things soon.

'But look out for Angels United'

I did, but it never came!

It was with those words that the Dredd story Awakening Angels ended. I know that this story thread was, thankfully, abandoned.

But does anyone know what Angels United was going to be about??

General / Judge Anderson - Lawless
04 February, 2015, 05:56:57 PM
I just read Anderson Psi Files Volume 3, and it had a story in it about a perp called Lawless who was a
comic prankster
. It seemed like it was going to become part of a series of appearances.

Does Lawless reappear?

I am not exactly begging to see more of this character who was probably going to turn out to
be a Judge
. But was just wondering if this was an abandoned story line?

Megazine / Meg 356 Rapid Response

The Great

A wonderful cover from Alex Ronald . . . whoa deja vu from my 2000ad review . . ..

A new Ewing/Willsher Dredd gets off to a great start.

Reaper continues well (if you like it as I do, otherwise it continues badly). And it's great to see more from the amazing Fay Dalton!

The Good

Demarco is pretty good.

The Unsure of

Angelic is a new story from Rennie and Carter. I love the art in this but I found the story a bit disjointed. It jumped around in time with the last part taking place 'Five days ago' - I wasn't sure if that was supposed to be 5 days from the start of the story, 5 days from the two weeks ago, 5 days from the current Dredd timeline, 5 days from 17th Jan 2015 (alright I knew it wasn't this). Additionally, I like the idea of a
Pa Angel
story, which I assume this is, but it seemed to mess with the back story
(Link not being his son)
without adding much. Hopefully my fears are unfounded and it will improve in coming weeks.

What I didn't like

The Johnny Nemo article. It did the thing I hate in articles which is to just tell you what happens in stories. It seemed to some kind of unsure advert with lines like 'whether readers enjoy Nemo or not will ultimately depend on their tolerance for humour' which made me think of one of those backhanded compliments that managers put on reviews of people they don't really like. Anyway, I just thought it was not my cup of tea at all. The book looks great though.

And . . .

The Floppy is Red Fang by Steve and Steve (Moore and Yeowell). I have not read this series before so that is nice. I will have a read of this later with a cup of Oolong tea and an organic ginger biscuit.

I am a bit concerned that Fleisher's Harlem Heroes part 1 is next week's floppy  :'( I would have preferred some mroe Finn, or Time House, or anything.

A wonderful Alex Ronald cover!

I am only reading Dredd at the moment as I will come back to the others.

Dredd - hmmmm, it's ok. The art is lovely. I am a bit confused seeing
Death and the lads suits appear magically on their bodies
, as I have seen death create makeshift suits in the past (most notably Judgement on Gotham). That's the comic nerd in my coming out.

Nice to see a
letters page
too!

Fantasy - I know - but if the Mega Collection was a success wouldn't it be great to have a 2000AD collection that reprinted the cream of 2000AD in these handsome volumes.

I'd suggest not making Revere the first volume though, as you may put some people off (not me).
