Hey all,

I'm off to Galway next week (work-related but I still expect some downtime in which to mooch about) so any suggestions for things to see / do / avoid would be most welcome!

You must try a Galway Hooker too of course.

And I shall be putting it on expenses!

Thanks for the tips, Link!

Galway Hooker is truly Nectar from the Gods. Although not connected with or from Galway may I suggest trying a pint of Smithwicks whilst you over in Emerald Isle! Safe and happy journey pal

I'd love to see the accounts technician's face when that comes up on expenses!

Galway is great fun, for a pub you cant go to far wrong with An Púcán http://anpucan.ie/ a lively music pub, and if you go to the end of the main street 'Shop Street' there is a huge choice of pubs ranging from the superpub to the quieter old man pub.
The small pubs are usually better for a bit of atmosphere and conversation, a lot of the bigger ones have music ranging from rock to trad. I should qualify all this by saying its a few years since I have been out in Galway. Avoid Eyre square and the Supermacs area after closing time, it can get messy!

If you have some time on your hands and a car you can easily get to the Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare or head west from Galway out to Connemara, which is nice.  If you have a good lot of time head to the Aran Islands and visit Dún Aonghasa, you can get a flight to the island at Invern http://aerarannislands.ie/.  Of course the neighbouring county of Mayo is far nicer;)

David, Michael - thanks for the tips.  Not sure how much free time I'll have but I'll be around for a week (conference) so hopefully time to explore here and there.  I'll consider picking up a car for a day if the schedule allows; would be great to head out a bit (I did have Co. Clare in mind so fingers crossed).

If you like Historic Military Fortifications, there are some mint-condition Martello Towers around Galway Bay.

Ooh, I do like a good Martello tower (the only others I've seen were in the Orkneys, built to defend against American invaders I think)...

Once again, thanks for all the tips, folks!

I really love Galway, it's got a nice atmosphere and I agree with pretty much all the recommendations above. Maybe a bit late to this - but there's also Sub City Comics in the shopping centre off Eyre Square. Small but perfectly formed and I always like to buy something from them when I'm there.

And the Burren in Clare is fantastic - should be plenty in bloom right now too if you get a look see.
To tell the truth, you can all get screwed.

I popped into Sub City earlier today, Mikey - had a good chat with the owner and I'll go back tomorrow since all the 2000AD section was blocked by a load of boxes.

Will be off to the Burren on Friday (got an invite to drop in on someone for coffee in Ennis as well).

Popped into Charlie Byrne's at lunchtime - great bookshop; I could spend hours in there (and will go back for round two tomorrow).  I fitted in a return trip to Sub City as well - didn't snag any 2K stuff but got the Head Lopper collection which I've been meaning to pick up for ages.  Conference is a bit manic; 40 talks today... 5-minute speed talks are a great idea but make brain full hurt much.  At least there was a table full of pizza and they laid on plenty of (Galway) Hookers afterwards.
