Yes, it seems Cormac McCarthy's much-praised novel is to be a film. I never read it, but I understand its brutal and gory depiction of bounty hunters scalping Native Americans for money, sport and sheer sadism. The brutal conquest of the American West, in other words.

Hugely brutal and bleak book. As a younger, more nihilistic man I read stuff like this and American Psycho all the time. Nowdays, not a film I would watch under any circumstances!

I read it a few years ago, then liked it so much I read it again last year. It's a breathtakingly brilliant piece of work, and yeah, every bit as unrelentingly brutal as you say.  It's one of those books that lodges in your head forever, much like his other one, The Road.

As the book is all about the imagery and dialogue, and never reveals the inner thoughts of any character (except for a disturbing fever dream near the end), I can see it working well as a movie.
