Title: Forum’s Favourite Thrill - Leatherjack vs. Chiaroscuro Round 2 Heat 04
Post by: Colin YNWA on 18 January, 2022, 06:30:21 AM
Welcome to Round 2, week 1 . This is where things get really interesting. All the big hitters are in the draw and let me tell you there are some ties coming up that will get the hearts racing and the camera's out for live coverage. They will cover acres of print on the back pages. There are also ties that will barely get mentioned on their local radio news summary. Week 1 however does feel a little like a warm up however. It hasn't got any of the high profile draws I hoped it might to kick us off, but it does start to hint at what's to come...

Neat little tie this one. Two well regarded (personal opinionTM) done and gone thrills. Both dealing with the nature of story. But which one will you be re-reading to find new meaning from:

Leatherjack - more info (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&choice=LEATHER)

Vs

Chiaroscuro - more info (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&choice=CHIAROS)

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Friday 21st January  and the winner gets a place in Round 3 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this? (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.0)

For those that need 'um and can be bothered to follow 'um there's some simple rules (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.msg1070150#msg1070150)

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

I haven't read Chiaroscuro but even if I had suspect I would still be voting the same way. John Smith and Paul Marshall had collaborated several times by this point, and they complement each other brilliantly.

Leatherjack.

There's a lot of good in Leatherjack, but it suffers from rather bland colours, and just not being as lush as Firekind (which I shouldn't compare it to but I can't help it, not least as they're collected in the same Hachette volume now). Chiaroscuro on the other hand, is exactly my cup of tea, and just brilliantly written and eerily drawn. I don't find comics scary, as a rule, but Chairoscuro is one of the few that has come closest to scaring me.

Chiaroscuro, I think - Leatherjack was fine, but not, y'know, amazing. Whereas I loved the Spurrier droid's horror outing - really unsettling and unusual.

Scissor ships, spinsters, perverts and body horror. John Smiths furrow might have been fairly clear by the time Leatherjack came round, but it's still marvellous (although this has got me thinking about what my top 10 Smith list looks like).

Leatherjack. Love that one, reads very well collected too. Fizzing with ideas but with a solid satisfying narrative behind it - if we're talking top ten Smith stories I think this one is top 5 for me, though I might be in the minority there. We'll find out if Colin organised a John Smith tournament after this one!

Chiaroscuro was a cool story though, absolutely.

Oooh! Now this is a tough one!

Leatherjack just about shades it over Chiaroscuro.

Leatherjack was fine, if a bit silly (giant scissors as the spaceships of old ladies).

Chiaroscuro was on a higher plane of existence.

Following on from Firekind, I must admit that Leatherjack was a something of a let down.

Still the better Thrill in this draw though.

Been a while since I read either, but both were pretty good I recall. Leatherback?

Last day. Its been a right ol' tussle this one. I think I know which way its going, but we can't be sure, last day votes could still turn this round. So get those votes in and I'll count up in the morning.

VOTING CLOSED

This one wasn't as close as I thought at first. At least by vote count. It does however mark how harsh this round will be at times. Two days in and we lose a second thrill that with a kinder draw would have deserved a Round 3 birth. Chiaroscuro is a great thriil. Its genuinely creepy and scary, dark and moves into really unpleasent territory without being sensationlist. It has however come up against an undervalued John Smith classic. Leatherjack might not be quite as good as Firekind but damn its close and

Leatherjack

will continue to tell its tale into Round 3.

Hmm. Two underwhelming Thrills from writers I generally like a lot here.

Leatherjack felt a bit Smith by digits/numbers and Mary Whitehouse as the big bad felt kitschy rather than Smith's usual psychologically terrifying. The creative team makes comparisons with Firekind inevitable and Marshall's change of style in the intervening years wasn't to my taste.

Chiaroscuro is Spurrier's film studies background busting out into his fiction in a slightly more satisfying way than early Beck & Kawl but I'm just not a fan of horror in general unfortunately.

Leatherjack by a thin tentacle.
