General / Black Flame Novels
22 February, 2023, 02:11:03 AM
For those who have read them, what are your opinions on the 2000AD Black Flame novels? As a general consensus, were these good?

At home I primarily read comics and graphic novels; however, I read novels when I take the train to and from work nearly everyday. I've been plowing through 2000AD novels lately, including Judge Dredd Year 1,2,3, Rico, and the Judges books. I've also read the Kingdom book, the (awesome!) Fiends of the Eastern Front Bishop novels and Matt Smith's Strontium Dog. For the most part, I love em all. I'm running out of 2000AD novels and am wondering what to read next.

Recently I found a collection of Black Flame novels available, which includes a handful of SD books, a few Dredd, a couple Rogue Trooper and Durham Reds. They are selling for £7 each. So I ask you - are these worth while? I'm might tempted to jump on the lot...

(I'll add, when not reading on the train, I'm typically listening to the incomparable MCBC, or Space Spinner 2000!)

General / Non-Droid Dredds
23 August, 2021, 06:07:28 AM
We all know nobody draws Dredd or any other 2000AD characters like Tharg's droids, but I sometimes come across interesting depictions of Dredd drawn by non-droid artists. Came across these ones by American artists John Romita Jr and David Finch.

Please share some others!

I see that there is a STRONTIUM DOG: SEARCH AND DESTROY WEBSHOP EXCLUSIVE available in the webshop (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/XB700).

How is this volume different than the Strontium Dog Search and Destroy: The Starlord Years volume previously announced? (https://www.bookdepository.com/Strontium-Dog-Search-Destroy-John-Wagner/9781781087657)

The Dimensions and Page count look the same, and both are Hardback

Thanks for any info.

General / The Art of Ian Kennedy

I just came across this on Ian's FB and haven't seen this posted here before; a beautiful hardback showcasing Ian Kennedy's artwork: https://www.dcthomsonshop.co.uk/the-art-of-ian-kennedy

I'll be picking it up for sure!

( I know several people here have commissions from Ian, you can see mine here https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerydetailsearch.asp?artist=Ian++Kennedy&GCat=37208 )

Classifieds / Wanted: Carlos Ezquerra Art
26 October, 2018, 12:07:13 AM
Long story short, I was in the process of getting a Commission from King Carlos and, like many here, am gutted with his passing. Over the past year I have started collecting 2000AD artwork/commissions (so far - three great commissions from Ian Kennedy and a classic piece from Trevor Hairsine). However, Carlos was my 'holy grail' and I would still love to get some of his art.

Since I cannot have a commission, I would like to get a page of his, preferably Strontium Dog (possibly Dredd).

(Artdroids has some - a little out of my price range [i.e. £1000 - I'd like to not spend quite that], and the Carlos FB page didnt work out and they have decided not to sell the artwork right now).

I'm asking that if anyone has a piece you would be interested to sell, or come across one on ebay/online, please let me know! (It will forever hang with honor on my wall - properly framed).

Thanks all.

General / Christmas Dredds
29 November, 2017, 05:35:26 PM
To get into the spirit of the Christmas season I would like to binge read all the Dredds that are holiday related.

Can anyone list several Christmas progs and the Case Files they would be in? I have the first 24 volumes but am still working on completing the rest (hopefully with Christmas creds!)

Any favorites? I personally enjoy the one by Ennis where Scrooge gets shot up scrounging a turkey vulture and ends up south side up on the dinner table  :D

Creative Common / Comic/Art Framing
19 May, 2017, 06:29:02 PM
I recently purchased some original artwork and progs that I plan to hang. I know several of you gents are collectors and display your zarjaz collections on the wall.

Does anyone have advice/examples how to frame a piece of art/comic to best preserve the art? I have been reading online and see that acid-free glass/wood etc. may be a consideration. I would also like to see examples of hanged art if anyone has any!

General / Judge Dredd Statutes
25 March, 2017, 09:19:22 PM
As mentioned in another thread, I am in the process of setting up a man-cave. I have never bought a Statue before and would like to get a new Dredd Statute for the cave.

I came across a the following: Judge Dredd Artist Edition Figure - Mike McMahon Version
(https://www.darkhorse.com/Products/29-228/Judge-Dredd-Artist-Edition-Vinyl-Statue-Mike-McMahon-Version)

Does anyone here have this Statute, and would you recommend it? Or is there another Dredd that is more worthwhile? (I like the low price, but only if it looks good in person too). Cheers

Books & Comics / Planet of the Apes Archive Vol. 1
24 March, 2017, 05:38:35 AM
I am a big fan of the Planet of the Apes (comics and films), so this solicitation for a series collecting the fantastic Apes comics from the 70's magazine is very exciting! I own several of the magazines and these are some awesome comics featuring apes, mutants and aliens, with absolutely fantastic artwork. Solicitation below:

Planet of the Apes Archive Vol. 1: Terror on the Planet of the Apes
Format:     Hardcover
Dimensions: 400 pages, 10.88 × 8.19 × 0.98 in
Published:     August 22, 2017
Publisher:     Boom! Studios
Language:     English

Experience the legendary Terror on the Planet of the Apes, collected for the first time ever, and remastered in prestigious archival hardcover. This classic series follows two friends—man and ape—on the run from the law.
Renown writer Doug Moench (Batman), the visionary co-creator of DC Comics' fan-favorite villain Bane and Marvel's Moon Knight, joined forces with legendary artists Mike Ploog (Ghost Rider), Tom Sutton (Doctor Strange), and Herb Trimpe (Incredible Hulk) in this timeless tale of two unlikely friends coming together for the adventure of a lifetime.

General / Your Favorite Prog Covers!
20 March, 2017, 05:11:48 AM
I would like to hear what you recommend as some of the best covers (or Starscans) of all time.

I am moving to a new house in a couple months and my new place will have a nice sized room fit for creating a "man cave". I will have a wall dedicated to 2000AD and would like to frame half a dozen or so progs along one wall.

I am not wanting to buy expensive issues if I can help it, but ones with great cover art that I can hang (I'll purchase a dozen or so and cycle them on the wall). My preference is any Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper, Dredd, and ABC Warriors, but am open to any suggestions. Thanks for any input!

Here are a few that I like, but I have not looked through all 2000...

Books & Comics / Valerian & Laureline
25 February, 2017, 07:09:34 AM
Valerian & Laureline - has anyone here ever read this series? I had never heard of it until recently when it popped up on my Amazon recommendations list. I have always enjoyed Tintin and Asterix and this appears to be in the same vein of action/adventure?

The complete series is being collected in hardback a collection called Valerian: The Complete Collection starting this June (all 22 stories, 3 stories collected in each in HC).

Can anybody recommend this series? With this complete HC collection coming out it might be a good time to jump on board.

I just picked up the trade Rogue Trooper: Last Man Standing (collecting the four issue IDW series) during the holidays for about $6.00 (CAD) on Amazon – so cheap I couldn't resist. Here are my thoughts - *Spoilers Ahead*

I really enjoyed this book, it was a fantastic relaunch of Rogue that stayed true to the character (it really nailed the personalities of Bagman, Helm, and Gunner) and began to flesh out Nu Earth. Lots of violence/action/blood/mystery – everything you could ask for.

Regarding their appearances, I don't mind the new look for Helm as it's a bit more modern/streamlined looking (and was probably much easier to draw). I don't care for Rogues buzz-cut however, his original Mohawk was much better/intimidating looking. Bagman is interesting, the fact that he has legs and can run around (and then physically connects to Rogue) is a great idea and makes him even more useful. Gunner also has legs, but I prefer his original look with Rogues hand that goes inside the stock.

The art is particularly a treat, as Ponticelli draws great action scenes – I especially enjoy the image of Rogue on page two. And the covers by Fabry are excellent, especially issue #1 (seen below). This is the first Rouge book I have seen in colour as well (I only have the first two Tales of Nu Earth) so it was a treat to see him in all his blue glory. The colouring also helped Nu Earth look especially grey and bleak.

I liked that there were two stories happening as well, Rogue helping the Souther base fight against the Norts, and then fighting the kill crew sent for him – for a short book like this they really told a lot of story. I like the idea of him having a "man" inside the Souther army feeding him info, in the form of Angel (who I assume was Cheng by the way she stood up for him). He is always alone so this is a unique way of fleshing out his cast.

The book ties up most threads tidy as Rogue chases off the Norths and defeats the Souther kill crew (one of which looked a little like the traitor General) with the help of the soldier he saved, and walks off in to the chem-clouds (towards Abada, "Nu Earth's very own hell hole" - wherever that is). However, there is SO much story left to be told. What happens at Abada? Who was responsible for the Quartz Zone Massacre (in this Universe)? When Rogue is sick does he turn green?

This is the disappointing part for this book – so much potential for an ongoing series and ended too soon. I wonder if there is a chance that the Progs or Meg would continue telling stories from this new reboot universe? Like how they have continued telling stories from the Dredd film. Maybe IDW will pick it up again...

I know this has been out for a while, but how about you guys, thoughts/feelings about this series? Did you read it? Would you read more?

General / Help a Poor Futsie Spend His Creds!

Thanks to the opinions of you lot my zarjaz 2000AD collection continues to grow. Based solely on the recommendations from everyone here I have made several purchases, and to my delight, they have been some of the best comics I have read (Kingdom, Jaiger, Glimmer Rats etc.)!

I'm conflicted as to what to buy next, but trust that you drokkers can guide me in the right direction. Below is a list of books I am currently interested in; make a suggestion as to what you think I should read first. I will buy the book that has the most 'votes' at the end of a few weeks (and post my thoughts after reading). If there is a book I should be reading that is not on the list, or a book that is on the list that shouldn't be, let me know! (Note: This list does not include Dredd, Strontium Dog, or Rogue Trooper as I already collect those). Thanks for any input!  :D

Suggestions / TPB US Release Query (Tales of Nu Earth)
24 December, 2016, 08:24:15 AM
Hello, I am wondering if there are still plans to release volumes 3 and 4 of Tales of Nu Earth in the US/Canada?

A year ago (Jan 2016) I emailed a general question (about Dredd and Rogue) and received this informative response from Matt Smith: "For your info, US Case Files 11 will be out in March, and volume 12 in August, with US Tales of Nu Earth volume 3 following in December."

Now, I have been purchasing the UK versions of the Case Files (as I cannot wait for the US trades to catch up!) and was wondering if I should just buy the UK volumes of Tales of Nu Earth as well. I dont see volume three online anywhere or for pre-order.

For the sake of continuity I would like the US dust jackets for the last two, but its not the end of the world - if not, I will go ahead and purchase the regular UK volumes. Either way, Ill be chuffed to read more Rogue! Thanks.

Help! / Whats the Mega City Situation in Canada?
10 December, 2016, 12:26:48 AM
I've read up to case files 14 so far, and Canada hasn't been mentioned (nor do I really expect it to).
The US has Mega city one and two, and Texas city, cursed earth, etc. UK has Brit city, Asia has Hondo city, Australia etc...

Whats happened to Canada? Is there anything going on up there other than Judges in the snow (Mega Igloo 1)?  :D Inquiring Canadian mind would like to know!

Books & Comics / Transformers Classics - UK
16 November, 2016, 07:11:49 AM
Growing up (in Canada) I was always been a Transformers fan and really enjoyed most of the Marvel run, especailly the Simon Furman stuff. I've never had the chance to read the UK TF books and was wondering if these collections (Transformers Classics UK) would be worth reading. Any opinions?

This was my submission for the Death of Dredd art contest but in B&W inks. I didn't have time to finish it before the deadline, so I just colored it today.

This is my fist time ever trying to color an image I drew. I downloaded GimpShop free online and gave it a go! I thought the program worked well, if anyone can suggest a better (free) program please let me know. Thanks!

Has anybody heard of this series? Issue #1 comes out this week and looks pretty cool. Its based on a video game (which I've never heard of) but it has an amazing creative team. Any body here considering checking it out?
