Books & Comics / The 9/11 Report

New graphic novel dealing with the events of 9/11.  I'm saying nothing about it, but the BBC review is a little irritating, if only for the glib way it treats the medium.

Still.

Discuss.

Help! / Deadwood!
20 August, 2006, 07:02:45 PM
All - I desperately need some help.

For reasons too boring to go into I've been recording the last few episodes of Deadwood with a view to watch them all in a chunk of 3 or 4.  Typically, the first one in the batch failed to record properly, and I don't want to watch the others until I've seen it.

The one I'm missing is "The Two Headed Beast" -- episode 5 of series 3, or episode 29, depending on how such things are reckoned.

You know what's coming...

Has ANYONE got this recorded?  VHS, DVD-R, anything!  If so would it be at all possible to appeal for a copy?  I'll fork out for any costs, obviously.

Thanks in advance!

Help! / Illustrators! Help!
16 August, 2006, 12:50:10 AM
So, a mate of mine is moving to London hoping to get a job doing illustration/graphics/design work.  I'm not terribly au fait with her work or qualifications so I can't paint much more of a picture than that, other than to say I think she's pretty talented.  She's not really into comics though; I guess she'd be looking for a design job with a company, or freelance magazine/periodical stuff.  Sorry: I'm sketchy on details.

She basically asked me if I had any suggestions on the best courses of action she could take when she got to the city.  I thought I'd open the question up to you guys.

Should she expect to have more luck applying for salary positions?  Or is it easier to get paid freelance work as an illustrator/designer?  What about agents or agencies?  Worthwhile?

Any advice or suggestions would be really welcome.  Sorry I can't be more specific on exactly what she's looking for: I'll try and get some more details and get back to ya.

Thanks in advance!

I know it's truly evil of me to self-pimp, but as an independent venture this mewling, blood-smeared little baby of ours needs all the nurturing it can get, and the shameless self promoting starts HERE.

Books & Comics / The End is Nigh 3
19 May, 2006, 05:33:27 PM
Just wanted to say that I am *yet again* bowled-over at the sheer brilliance of this little gem.  The amount of research, creativity and thought that's gone into it leaps off every page, and the sheer wealth of content means it'll continue to be my Bogside Browser of choice for months to come.  Funny, intriguing, often surreal and genuinely informative.  Swee-poib.

Well worth the money, and if it didn't go against every moral certainty that I hold dear to praise the Molch so highly, I'd rabbit on about it even longer.

Incidentally: A supreme front cover.  So good, in fact, that I'm even going to apologise to the ultra-talented artist responsible for inadvertently (read: drunkenly) perving over his girlfriend.

Help! / Mp3s and Tech Shmuckery
19 April, 2006, 01:02:34 AM
Hi.  Help!?

I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want: a decent MP3 file of Ennio Morricone's "The Good The Bad and the Ugly".  I want this without having to sign-up to some monthly/yearly subscription arsesite, without having to wade my way through twelve million "Mobile Ringtone" adverts and without having to pay more than the 79p that iTunes will charge me for the same thing.  I also don't want to sign-up to some file-sharing network which will watch my web-browsing trends and start bomobarding me with individually-targetted ads.

Alternatively, I want something that will allow me to convert my iPod file of the same tune into an MP3.

Are either of these things possible?

Answers, if there are any, would be most gratefully received if in Stupidtalk.

Thanks.

Help! / More IT geek-help required...
11 February, 2006, 07:21:51 PM
Another I-know-dick-all-about-computers plea for assistance:

Moving house and internet providers quite soon, so I fancy setting-up a dedicated domain-name, email etc etc - maybe "www.sspurrier.com" or whater, so I can build a website at some point in the future, and I can set up an email address that I can take with me wherever I go.

Question is: Howzthatwork then?

In nongeek English, if possible.  Cheers in advance.

Help! / Internet Guff
23 January, 2006, 07:55:21 PM
Howdy all.  Wildly off topic here, but I know how many of you folks are Down With The TechFunk, so I thought I'd dip for a view here.

Here's the jimmy:

I'll soon be moving into a new flat, and will obviously want to organise a decent Broadband connection.  I don't yet know what phoneline the place has got, though I assume it's a BT standard line.

The most important consideration, I think, will be making sure that we can have multiple PCs connected to the net at the same time.  In my current crib, for example, I've got two computers with wireless jobbies running from the same router, which was sorted-out at great length and complexity by a tech-headed pal of mine, after we'd already got the BT Broadband connection set-up.

Question is: Is there a good service-provider who will set us up with routers or networks or whatever the best option might be, and still be quite cheap, or is it better to just get a single broadband connection and get someone to come and sort out all the wireless jiggery-pokery afterwards?  Or, alternatively, is there a simpler way to get more than 1 PC on the web at any one time?

I'm crap at all this.  Help me, please.

Events / ZARJAZ Exhibition
10 December, 2005, 04:55:29 PM
Just wanted to quickly sing the praises of the 2000AD exhibition currently running in London.  We went to the opening event last night and it's really, really, REALLY worth seeing.

Superb collection of original art for purists, perfectly juxtaposed with dozens of modern interpretations of popular characters by artists and designers.  It has the feel of a genuine cultural showcase, rather than A Bunch Of Geeky Things In A Room.

Major kudos to Rufus for working so hard, and if you're within a plane/train/car trip of London, go see it!

Everyone from the smoke okay?  I'm getting news of power surges, possible bombs, huge numbers of casualties and "limbs on the tracks" from the London Underground.  Also some guy on Sky just mentioned he watched a bus-explosion.

City under siege?
