Prog / Re: prog 2182: So long and geek out

For my part I did like the Hershey story, mainly for her declaration that "Judge Dredd doesn't get to define me". One of my favourite Judge Dredd scenes in the whole past decade was when Hershey gave Dredd a carpet parade in "Bullet to King Four" and the breakdown of their relationship was something that I think the comic really didn't take proper full advantage of (Joseph "I no longer recognise your authority" Dredd suffered literally zero consequences for outright mutinying in public). I welcome an opportunity for a dedicated Hershey adventure to work that out in greater detail.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm afraid that there doesn't seem to be any option to edit my original message to change the link but I have produced an updated version of the original video. There are no major differences if you've already saved or watched the first version, but a few lines were far too quiet and barely audible (e.g. when I'm talking about the Statue of Justice in the section on Case Files 5) so I've re-recorded them.

The ESSENTIAL Judge Dredd

Thanks for the feedback. I see what you're saying about Volume 3 but I still think Volume 5 is more significant because it's still the one whose contents get referenced a lot more often, even if only for the Apocalypse War. Plus, although i don't talk about it too much in the video I think that the Crime Files series shouldn't be overlooked as "filler" but provides valuable background colour to Dredd's world - he's not destroying world-ending peril or untangling grim corruption and conspiracy every single week of the year, and a prolonged sequence of him solving "regular" crime is actually quite useful for showing what Dredd does every day other than the half-hour on Wednesday afternoon when I'm back from the newsagent and it helps make MC1 feel more lived-in and authentic. That's one of the reasons why I reccommend "Mandroid" in the video too, Boss Schulz is informative to the setting precisely because he's the low-level crook that the typical citizen has to deal with.

Besides, Vol. 3 doesn't have "Gaze into the fist of Dredd!" ;)

Still, thanks a lot for your feedback! I was concerned that the slidehow style of presentation would look a bit stilted so I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Howdy to all Squaxx. It's been a very long time since I was active on the forum but although I dropped off from the community I've not stopped reading 2000AD. I've been trying to use the lockdown to do something constructive and productive so I've put together something that I've wanted to do for years but never had the time to sit down to before now - something that I hope that the whole community will find useful and people can refer to to get new readers interested in exploring the Galaxy's Greatest Comic

The ESSENTIAL Judge Dredd

Rather than making it a simple "Top 5" list though, I've themed the collection around the GNs which give the broadest overview of the Dreddverse - they're not necessarily the Best Stories Ever (even though I love them all) but they are a useful primer for introducing people to the key concepts of Mega-City One and how Dredd and his life and times think and work. They're books which temper lore with action and so I think will be the ones most likely to engage new readers and keep them interested is discovering more.

I'm just starting out on this analysis & media commentary on Youtube and I'm hoping to make it a springboard to a longer YouTube series so I'd welcome everyone's comments & criticism of it. What do you think of the selection, or my reasoning behind them? How did you find the video's presentation? Is there anything that you'd like to see explored in more detail in a follow-up video?

By the way, I know that the audio quality is awful - I couldn't really afford a proper microphone if I'm not sure this plan has legs, but if it starts to take off I will invest in one!

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys it!

General / Judge Dredd - the Manga?
19 November, 2014, 05:53:13 PM
On another forum where the discussion topic was "replace the main character of an anime with Dredd. What happens?" (The answer is that EVERYTHING becomes more amazing), I found this fascinating clipping, attached below. Apparently like how we had the "Lawman of the Future" comic for kids, Japan got its own Dredd spinoff to coincide with the increase of publicity from the Stallone movie.

I'm very intrigued to see an Eastern take on this very Western comic. Does anyone have more info on the Manga Dredd?

There isn't a countdown in numerals in Julius Ceasar, I think that they were just making the Roman connection explicit.

It must have been a slow day in the Independent news room on Tuesday, because they gave a front-page column and an entire interior page to the tiresome Argentine bleating over the Falklands (like when dog bites man, this is not news). I fired a letter off to the paper complaining about their hypocrisy because it's actually the case that today, with all the land stolen from Mapuche Indians, Argentina is a bigger colonial power than we are! They printed it as well, which was a nice treat over this morning's cornflakes.

I'm sorry, I wanted to give Greysuit another chance but this is total nonsense. The idea that all of this black-budget secret elite super-power brainwashing is so flimsy and insecure that it can be undone by someone just repeating a line of dialogue (especially after we had an entire part testing his loyalty) is impossible to take seriously. What if he was in the staff canteen at Smithereens and wanted Shreddies for breakfast but was reminded of the awful unjust traumas of the school refectory when the cook replies to him "we've only got Cornflakes, sorry"?

Unless the twist is that Dr. Green is a double-agent saboteur deliberately doing shoddy jobs on the Primals to ensure that the agents break down, there's really no reason for it.

I loved appleseed and was a hardcore shirow fan during my  1990's Japanese comics phase but he started to lose me with Orion.

Orion intrigued me more than it engaged me. I found the book very interesting, not so much for the story or art but more for it providing a window into Buddhist cosmology.

The Ghost President is a pretty savvy character. I'd vote for him, if there were any more elctions.
Have you read the previous series? He was a deranged wingnut when he was alive. I'm voting for the Shadow Party, for evil you can rely on.

That's just the thing though - Ghost President is not alive and he's changed in more ways than his core body temperate. Once you've filtered out the 1930s-Amazing-Stories-cover-strapline speech, Ghost President is actually making a lot of sense in confronting the terror of the deathworlds by inspiring life and awakening a different spirit in the heart of our own planet through the Conehead Beatles' music. It's a good plan, and so far, it seems to be working.

If there's one thing that seems off about Year One, is that there's no real tangible sense of it being a look back in time. Yeah, yeah, Dredd's got a Mk. 1 Lawgiver, but while Dredd was already a veteran of Booth's war by the time he left the Academy he was still a young buck in his 20s. I can't tell any visual difference between Year One's Dredd and hulking 50-year man of modern Dredd. It might only be a niggle, but in all honesty it does leave me feeling a bit dislocated.

I'm one of those fogeys (at the grand old age of 26) who prefers physical media, so I still spend a lot of time in shops looking for videos and discs. After searching for months, I finally chanced across a copy of David Lynch's Eraserhead completely by accident in a Forp! store, and snagged it straight away. I watched it tonight.

...hmm.

That's all. Hmm.

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd:Blu Ray review

I did notice the grainy noise in several scenes in the cinema - I assumed that it was an effect of the 3D camera. I'm disappointed to see it transferred onto the Blu-Ray version as well.  :(
