Well submission one finally got knocked back. Tharg's feedback wasn't much to go on (understandably) and so I thought I'd post it here to try to get a little more feedback before submitting the next one which is ready to go.

Any advice gladly received and please be as critical as you like as otherwise I'll never learn.

Anyway enjoy.

Well my rejection came yesterday making it a grand total of (almost) 9 months! Still got it and have next one ready to go pending feedback on the last.

General / Re: Progs, trades or both?

I can definately see the appeal of the both option as when I do my re-reads, especially when I was reading stories as one rather week by week it could be a pain. The second 500 issues in particualr when so many stories were victim of long delays which required digging around to find the parts.

I do find however that for the extra effort ou stumble across all sorts of other stuff in the Prog itself, from stories you might otherwise forget, letters and fan pictures of interest and even down to adverts that place the Prog into its era so beautifully.

Gordon Ramsey kicked him out of his restaurant for being obnoxious to members of his staff.

The irony of that is delicious.

Well sorry to come to the party late but while away on the parent run this week I finally got around to reading 'All Star Superman'. Now I'm no Superman fan but this is unbelievibly good. If Final Crisis was Morrison's love song to the DC Universe the clear affection he has for Superman in that title chimss through here too. He loves his fella and seems to understand him in a way that makes me love him too. Don't feel the urge to go and read more Superman stuff this will do.

As King Trout said its near the perfect Superhero story. They don't have to be cruel and world destroying, grim and gritty, caustic and cynical. They can as Mark Waid said have "more faith in us than we have in ourselves"

Magic stuff.

Well finally found it while in Shrewsbury. Its fun but suffers from what many of the Uderzo written strips do, flights of fancy beyond the world as built by Goscinny. Still he is a wonderful artist, if not at his peak he hasn't dipped too much and the fact that its a compilation means that nothing is too serious. Its a nice bit of throw away fun and in many ways a fine way to end the second phase of Asterix. Well except they missed the chance for one last banquet which was a big miss for me.

I'm intrigued to see what the future will bring.

General / Progs, trades or both?
28 October, 2009, 05:32:48 PM
For a while now I've noticed there's a great deal of love for the 2000ad trades here. Which always surprised me a little as I assumed many folk here would have many of the Progs. What I'd like to ask then is do people prefer to have the stories in trade format getting rid of the progs, or keep the original progs and therefore don't bother with the trades (I'm in that camp). The last option, which I suspect may be the one a lot do is to get both? If you do get both is it purely as you find reading stories in trade more convenient?

Anyway yeah so how do you prefer your thrills?

I'd love to see you start a blog as I do enjoy you're stuff. Maybe you shouldn't try to force a style on your work as I do think it looks greats as is. Mind watch listening to me as your tighter stuff does get more votes in the competitions so it might just be me spouting nonsense!

As a complete newcomer to Vonnegut, is there one book that people would recommend as a decent starting point?

My personal favourite is "Deadeye Dick" but for more 'typical' Vonnegut you can't go wrong with the two 'famous ones' "Breakfast of Champions" and the aforementioned "Slaughterhouse 5"

Prog / Re: Prog 1659 - Desert Strike!

Well it was there when we got back from our trip to the land of parents, along with a rejection letter from Tharg (wayhey at least I can now send another one in been waiting patiently since Feburary, more about that elsewhere later).

Not much to add except another fantastic Prog. Three tales heading nicely to a conclusion, Necrophim adding more and more to its steady development and Dredd was just masterful, though I can't remember a time when Wagner used so many words. Not a a problem, just an observation.

The Cursed Earth article felt a little like a fish out of water. As it was only a section it didn't provide any real insight or conclusions and now its led me to Journal of American Studies which isn't on my pull list believe it or not. Still might get lucky and it might be one of the electronic resources we subsribe to at work.

I'd always heard that this was a pretty ropey Special and never got around to buying it. From those panels however it certainly looks good and I may have to reaccess the situation, Baike, Burns and Shaky all under one cover (and the rest ain't bad either) I'm thinking this is a must but all of a sudden!

Whenever they release a Sgt Rock series over at DC the sales estimates always place in below 100 in the sales charts. Which for a name character and normally a good creative team is pretty disappointing. Still DC keep doing them so they might be selling elsewhere or the trades doing well. It would seem clear that the sales on these items are enough to keep Dynamite happy so fingers crossed there is a market out there.

I'd really hope so as I'd love to see some ongoing WWII comic. DC seems to have the richest set of characters to mine and I always hope they'll get behind such a title in the way they have with Jonah Hex for the western.

Heck Rebellion should just buy the rights and relaunch Battle... ok so I'm dreaming now but hey

Over at Newsarama ennis has confirmed the other 2 stories in the current run of Battlefields after 'Happy Valley'. The sequel to 'Tankies' I'd already heard about but also a sequel to 'Night witches'

"The second is The Firefly And His Majesty, the sequel to series one's The Tankies, in which Sergeant Stiles finally gets a better tank- unfortunately, so do the Germans. The last one is Motherland, sequel to The Night Witches, wherein pilot Anna Kharkova gets posted to single-seat fighters in time for the battle of Kursk- one of the biggest and most terrible slaughtering matches of the entire war."

more here about the possiblity of future stories too...
