The first two Rogue phone books are a HUGE amount of brilliant comics. It’s only when a different script droid comes in for The Hit that it loses its way...

There's a lot of good comics in that run, sure - but even while GFD was writing it, there's a lot of awfulness. The way Rogue keeps talking about 'future war.' The Romeos and Scan girls of Fort Neuro. Rogue winning a disco-dancing competition. The toe-curling awfulness of Timeslip. The whole of the Horst storyline (not terrible, no, but just... meh.)  Rogue suddenly gaining telekinesis(!)

I like RT, but I think it's valid to take into account the lows of a strip as well as the highs; Slaine and Bad Company could be shoe-ins for the top spot, but some of their latter material is going to (deservedly) stop them getting there.

Can I be really nerdy and say that I hope that isnt the cover

Stront has distinct phases costume wise - Galaxy Killers and Journey Into Hell Alpha has double small shoulder pads; Death's Head through to Gronk Affair he has more bulbous helmet and left pad; Moses through to Rage he has the three band pad shown here...

Given that the new hardcover of 'The Son' has a classic Johnny from circa Death's Head era, I think you're waaaay out of luck there!

Loving these write-ups. Think I'll have to add WotT to 'the list'...

All those joining Zombo, Hershey, Devlin Waugh and other mighty thrills that have fallen already... yet Sancho Panzer rolls on. The beautiful nature of a random draw.

If this tourney now results in anything less than the complete victory of Sancho Panzer, then what was even the point?

Also, Colin's link doesn't lead to anything relevant.

Only because it's now sold out.

Only one of these has been reprinted before...

Only if you don't count the Hachette books! Shame about 'By Private Contract' though.

Aw, no! What a draw! Lot of love for both of these strips.

I think 13 is just going to edge it for me; wish we'd had a bit more of it. The phrase 'Tits like God's own earmuffs' has never quite left me.

Mungo Gallowgrass - Adventures with my codpiece

I'm plaigarising myself! 'Confessions of a Baebe Magnet' is a much better title, too.

Mean Team isn't even the best Belardinelli strip with a talking cat.

🤣

I'm a bit baffled by the continued renaissance of Helltrekkers. I mean... it's fine. I've had some issues with Stickleback occasionally, but it wins this match-up.

Wow. A couple of draws have surprised me, but to see the (IMO) terrible Mean Team hold up against Firekind... is genuinely baffling…

Never bet against nostalgia...

Ro-Busters has bags of charm, but is a bit all over the place. The likes of Terra-Meks and Rise and Fall... are bona fide classics, but there's some painfully juvenile stuff (particularly among the Starlord run), some weak characterisation and it's artistically schizophrenic.

Okay, ABC Warriors has had some highs and lows of its own - but what highs! And however the series, the characters themselves are all-time British comic classics.

Those seven pages of Mean Team's first episode are a masterclass in storytelling: peerless world building; multiple character sketches; team hierarchy explained; Bad Jack's motivation hinted at; a full semi final that shows us rules of play then a phenomenal ("Now pick up the flag and let's hit the showers") cliff hanger.

Incredible.

Wagner/Grant pull the same trick with Ace Trucking. By the end of the first episode, you know the whole set-up and have a pretty good (if rough) idea of every respective character.

Regend writers ought to take note.
