Hi all. The other day I heard - for the first time ever - the XTC song Sgt Rock.
I'd no idea it existed, and it was lots of fun.

I've also been listening lately to Grimly Fiendish by the Damned, and fine work it is, too.

Of course, I knew about Transvision Vamp's Hanging Out With Halo Jones, but can others provide more comics references in pop/rock/whatever music?

Apologies if we've done this thread before. I don't remember.

Well, The Teardrop Explodes got their name from the Silver Surfer and The Shamen had a song called Adam Strange (although I believe that might really have been about drugs.)

And Halo James.http://www.screamingsecrets.com/discography/cb_images/dd_2.jpg">

The Fall's "How I Wrote Elastic Man" is so titled to avoid a lawsuit, as what Mark E. Smith actually sings is "How I wrote Plastic Man". I'm fairly sure there are other references to comics in the Fall's output, but I can't think of them right now.

As the LP http://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Science-Anniversary-Remastered-Expanded/dp/B000QCU9QW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-0053124-5333408?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182126390&sr=8-1">Big Science has just been re-released, I should also mention Laurie Anderson's "O Superman".

Anthrax's I am the law is an obvious one

What about the incredible PWEI - Can U Dig It?

V for Vendetta, Furry Freak Bros, Marvel and DC, Alan Moore (knows the score), Bruce Wayne etc...all in one song.

Then there's Donovan's Superman Sunshine mentioning
Supes and Green Lantern.

i said by the way baby what's your name
said i go by the name of lois lane
and you could be my boyfiend you surely can
just let me quit my boyfriend called superman
i said he's a fairy i do suppoose
flyin through the air in pantyhose
he may be very sexy or even cute
but he looks like a sucker in a blue and red suit
i said you need a man who's got finesse
and his whole name across his chest
he may be able to fly all through the night
but can he rock a party til the early light
he cant satisfy you with his little worm
but i can bust you out with my super sperm

Surely they all pale in musical comparison to "Pocket Full Of Kryptonite" by The Spin Doctors?

Tanky

Two more strikingly similar titles for ya...

Goldfinger - Superman
Can't remember the words for that but it's on the first Tony Hawks game if you really have to hear it

And from the depths of obscurity

Flat Planet - Superman
'Superman can you save me from my own insecurity'

And surely you can't get much more 'comics in music' than Gorillaz?

Tanky

Good point, well made!

Been having a play with the lovely site Trout linked  as I think this might count too... (plus it's a crackin' tune)

There was the V for Vendetta song by the bloke from Bauhaus.

And of course, I am the Law by The Human League (who appeared in Robohunter after a fashion).

A lot of the songs happened it seems just because 2000AD was brilliant at the time and stuck a chord with the musicians.  If they hadn't gone by the time Roxilla turned up, I bet they weren't long for the comic.

"I've also been listening lately to Grimly Fiendish by the Damned, and fine work it is, too."

Wot a great song.
