Oooo, some excellent films.

I love Time Bandits alongside Baron Munchausen and especially Brazil.  Twelve Monkeys is a favourite as well.

So then.  Does anyone know how long the 'new arrival' limbo lasts before full membership is obtained?

Film & TV / Re: The New Star Wars Universe

Makes me glad I don't have any emotions invested in Star Wars.

It's like with all those Marvel comic characters.  I don't care if they make bad films of them and I enjoy the ones that are good.

You guys should stay away from Irreversible, then! Makes that film look like Sesame Street

I saw that film just over 10 years ago and it still haunts me today... well, that one particular scene (the one with the fire extinguisher was pretty memorable also).

I am the only fan of Timehouse. :-)

I really enjoyed the Century Duty story.

Classifieds / Wanted: 56 Back Issues from progs 500-900
03 October, 2013, 11:41:08 AM
I am looking to fill in some gaps in my collection.  This may be a long shot, but I figure it's still worth trying.

I am looking for progs 500, 541-550, 552, 558, 559, 589-598, 650-662, 667-670, 678, 791, 794-799, 846, 848, 850, 851, 870, 872 and 891.  I'm not too bothered about newsagent marks so long as the progs are in a good condition.

I am also on the lookout for Megazine vol 2 issues 46-55.

I can't really afford to pay a large sum and I am looking to buy for about 20-30 pence per prog as that's about what I've been managing off ebay.  I thought I'd ask here as well because it might take a long time to fill in these odd and sods through ebay.

Congratulations to all the winners.  There was a very high standard of work in this competition - everyone did a fantastic job.  It was fun to participate as well ;)

Thanks to CrazyFoxMachine for laying it on for us.

Well wouldn't you know it.  The Dead Man's entire run is missing from my collection.  I'm going to feel much better once I have tracked down those missing 54 progs.

I think how you store and organise your progs makes a degree of difference.  When I started collecting I used to have small piles of progs on a bookshelf.  They were then moved to boxes under my bed and stayed in boxes for years.  Whilst in the boxes I never reread them.

Actually, it was when I needed to make some space I moved my collection back into piles on a bookshelf in a spare room.  Being able to see them out made a difference and I did start thinking that I should read them if I'm going to own them.  When I needed some inspiration for my artwork I figured I would start rereading from the first prog I bought.  I soon realised that keeping them in piles was really cumbersome and I got some cheap magazine files from ebay.  This made the world of difference.  The progs are tidy, look great on a book shelf and are easily accessible.

My plans for the future include making markers to show every 50th prog so I can find them quicker and more magazine files.

Odd that you prefer Friday to Rogue, since they seem like the same essentially blank character to me. The only difference between those eras of the strip is how well or how badly it's written, and the absolute best Rogue Trooper tale of all time - John Smith's Cinnabar (624-635) - is good because of everything else in the story apart from the either confused or sad titular hero. When you get to that era you're in for a treat.

When it comes to Friday and his later run I do felt he was given more personality than the original Rogue had.  Certainly after Midge's death (hope I got the character name right) and then there was his relationship with Venus.  All alongside some excellent military based stories (I loved him in the little rocket launcher buggy).  Those few stories had tons of atmosphere and emotion.  Plus it has some of my favourite Henry Flint artwork!

I have read Cinnabar.  I got it in an issue of 2000AD Monthly and I agree it is an astounding story and definitely the best of the original Rogue.

13 replies and not one of you has mentioned Button Man::)

Read it in the reprint the Megazine did, but yes, why did no one else mention it?

Nemesis, books 7 and 9 for the astounding and (to my 10 year old self) utterly terrifying John Hinklenton artwork. Torquemada The God is also great.

Once again, read them.  I first read book 7 in 2000AD Monthly (just see what a god send that publication was!) and adored Hinklenton's crazy artwork.  I read book 9 in the Nemesis trade.

But, there are also the lesser know ones, such as Tribal Memories that Colin mentioned, that you will stumble across and love.  I think you are doing it the best way - get a bunch and then work your way through.

The lesser known ones are certainly going to be a treat.  A good number of the really well known ones I've managed to already read elsewhere (as is becoming almost embarrassingly apparent - I'm starting to worry people are thinking "why bloody start this thread if you've read all the damn stories?!?" ;)).  Even then I still have a long list of stuff I can't wait to read.

Some really interesting responses here.  It's interesting to hear how so many people have embraced digital mediums.  I certainly can't criticise the reasoning.  I currently do nearly all my artwork digitally partly because I don't have the space to leave my art materials out and I get sick of having to tidy up each day.  My music collection is mostly digital now (this was because I started using my computer as a sound system and it was just easier to have mp3s so I could have other discs running on the disc drive).  I also stream films now rather than buy DVDs and that's a cost issue.

I suppose for me that's the big issue.  Money.  I don't have a lot of it.  I do own an eReader (it was a freebie someone passed onto me) and it's pretty good, but eBooks are far too expensive.  It is just cheaper to buy the physical books second hand.  Tablets are too expensive and not worthwhile enough to me to justify the cost (I can't even justify owning a laptop or smart phone).  Also space isn't an issue for me.  I don't have a lot of space at the moment but I don't really own a great deal anyway.  The bulk of my stuff are books, clothes and comics.  OK, so if I did have a lot more disposable cash I'd probably buy a lot of shoes as well - a girl can dream.

It's interesting how much circumstance plays in our preferences.

I see you've already read 'The Black Hole' so I presume that you have read 'Slaine: The Horned God' also.

Yes, I have a copy of the Rebellion trade print (along with Warrior's Dawn).  I also have a copy of Khronikles - I think it's the peak of the ABC Warriors with Black Hole and Hellbringer.

I managed to catch Necropolis when it was reprinted in the Megazine but have never read Dead Man.  I already know the twist to Dead Man so I'll never really know what it was like to read it the first time round.  I imagine it's a great story nonetheless.

Ever read Firekind? If not you are in for such a treat BUT check the notes here.

I haven't read Firekind.  I was aware of it and saw some episodes in some back issues but never read it.  It is only recently I've become more aware of it and that was from finding out that John Smith wrote it.  It is another one on my list.

Halo Jones Book III!   Bad City Blue!  Metalzoic!  Strontium Dog: Ragnarok Job through to Bitch!  The Dead!  Sooner or Later!  Tharg's Head Revisited!  Bad Company!  And so much good Dredd!

And that's just the first year of your haul!  Glarggle...

I've read all Halo Jones.  I have had the Titan collection for years and still feel sad that Moore and Gibson never finished it off.  Halo Jones was great not just for the story but also for the female characters.  It's one of my favourite comics ever.  Probably my favourite Alan Moore comic.

There are plenty of titles there that I haven't heard of as well.  I saw Bad City Blue when I was sorting through and organising everything and briefly wondered if it had anything at all to do with that Second City Blues story.  I suspect it doesn't.

With music you have those who prefer vinyl, those who prefer CDs and those who prefer MP3s.

When it comes to your thrill power which do you prefer?  Back issues, collected volumes or digital progs?

Although I do enjoy collected volumes for the convenience, reading a load of back issues is somehow more satisfying for me.  Even if I'm just reading one story, it can be really nice to see what else was in the prog as I go along and maybe start reading other things.  Or you can see if there is anything interesting on the Nerve Centre and Input pages.

(As for music, I prefer MP3s simply because I use my desktop as my home sound system and my mp3 player when out and about.  It's pure convenience)
