Books & Comics / Re: Know any realistic superhuman books?

How about Paul Chadwick's Concrete? A guy gets put in a body much like the Thing but there's no fights or anything. Just someone coming to terms with not going to the toilet anymore, having fingers too big for the telephone and becoming a minor, slightly reluctant, celebrity.

Got the Battle and Whizzer & Chips from annuals from Sainsbury's in Cameron Toll.  Look marvellous.

I just wish they would distribute it.  There's not too many Sainsbury's north of the border and I know of others that can't get it at theirs either.  Hopefully, it will go on their webstore at some point but I (and others) just can't get hold of them currently.

Comics need help, yeah, but I think Egmont might have got a pleasant surprise if they'd released a Whizzer'n'Chips Annual on mass release.  I'd just like to be able to buy them.  My local doesn't stock books, so it's Glasgow or bust but I can't remember any large Sainsbury around there that stocks books either.

Quite excited by them though.  Might have to be eBay but I'd prefer to support the idea by buying from the publisher or retailer.

In a bit of a surprise, Egmont has teamed up with Sainsbury's (although I've no idea why) and put out some 'Best of' annuals:
The Best of Whizzer and Chips Annual
The Best of the 70s Girls Comics Annual
Battle Annual
Roy of the Rovers

DC Thomson have also got some coming out, including:
The Best of The Topper
The Best of The Beezer
The Best of Hotspur
The Best of Bunty
along with the usual Beano, Dandy, Oor Wullie/Broons.

That, along with Bear Alley releasing the excellent Arena from The Crunch, it looks like some nice stocking fillers for Xmas.  Although I've no idea why I can't just buy them from anywhere. Not too many Sainsbury's in Scotland - even less the ones that sell books.

Maybe next year, we might get a Tornado, Eagle, Starlord, Vulcan or Valiant, with rumours of a Bear Alley Kampgruppe Falken.  We can but hope.

One day, I was slagging off the original Dredd movie, noting about the helmet being taken off, when a friend said he liked the film and didn't care about the helmet as he didn't read the comics.  I came to the conclusion that comparing books, comics and movies was foolhardy.  Is LotR better or worse than the books?  Doesn't matter, as long as the films are good, it works.  Even LoEG was an acceptable movie if you ignore what it was based upon and just look at it as a sidekick to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That said, yeah, I really think they could do New Gods justice.  Kirby wasn't subtle.  Of all the artists there have been, his was eminently transferrable to movies.  I'd love to see my favourite story of the
ship powered by the dead body
.  Maybe not the best one for the silver screen but I really think the whole film could rock if the budget was as big as any Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.  It couldn't be done as a half measure, otherwise it would be as hair-tearing as the Silver Surfer FF movie.  How could anyone make Galactus dull???

Jack THE KING Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus vol. 1-4
I damn hope 4th world becomes a couple of movies one day. The perfect mix of 2001 and Star wars.
Some Lord of the Rings style big budget trilogy, done absolutely right would make Star Wars look like a Lego movie.  Opressed Earthlings, Thor-like heroes, a Darth Vader without the hope, a flawed protagonist, three completely different planets, the mystery of the Source, the chance of amazing special effects from Lightray's hair to the furnaces of Apokolips, amazing fight scenes with the weirdest array of villians.  Hell, you could even throw in Superman for a touch of marketing.

Boy, would it make a great film.

I dunno, feels very right to me. Its not a Moore character. The original creator got his Marvel money. Its exactly the type of story Grant excels at. The only negative is Alan doesn't like Grant. But no one's being ripped off (anymore). Who cares if two overly sensitive writers don't get on?  Newton didn't like Hooke or Liebniz and was a greater genius than both. Does it matter? Should we rank in order of importance then refuse any theories stated by anyone below the top?

If you like Morrison during his 2000AD period, I'd suggest buying it. Even if that puts a genius who doesn't read comics in a bit of a huff.

If people are a fan of John Smith, then I thought Straitgate was the best thing to appear in Crisis.  Full of teenage angst but the art and story intertwined so well, I'd still rate it in my top ten comic stories (not that I have such a list - maybe I should have?).

I adored Crisis.  Some great stories in there: Straitgate, Third World War, , Bible John, Insiders, New Adventures of Hitler etc.  But then, there was the New Statesmen.  Not great.  Nor was the Real Robin Hood.

Try Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme for an excellent book on what happens when superheroes do what's right for the world by taking it over.  A seriously great book that set the foundations for Watchmen, Identity Crisis, Marvel's Civil War, Kingdom Come and so many others.

There seem to some lesser known characters scheduled though - I think Captain Britain and Namor are both getting collections.
How do you know?  Or at least, can you say a little more on what's coming?

5 years after the comic ended, I discovered Kimota was Atomic(k) backwards  :-[

Just never occurred to me.

Struggling to see the point of the mess up. Who gains?  Even if there's a cash flow problem, going quarterly would have worked and gained more sympathy.

Got to be the Legion of Super-Heroes Great Darkness Saga in there.  I'd also go for Return of the New Gods - a decent follow-up to the more celebrated Kirby material.  Not enough for a TPB but All-Star Comics 69-70 (JSA v JSA / Green Lantern goes wild) was a couple of terrific issues.  The Neal Adams GL/Green Arrow street comics is a bit dated but worth a highlight.

Trouble is DC are obsessed with their IMO sub-standard 50s/60s material.  No surprise to me that Marvel became the hottest kid on the block there.

I picked it up very occasionally and thought a number of stories were okay or better. However, Millar went out of his way to put off anyone vaguely 'mature' in age. I would just come away thinking, Im not supporting that offensive little git. Doubt I was the only one. Wouldn't have taken me much to get on board.
