Megazine / Re: So is it worth it? Meg 275

Agreed, it's just a big free comic, not a graphic novel.

When said big fee comic is 64pp of classic Jock Dredd, it's worth the cover price on its own. When it's Snow/Tiger however, I feel we're due a part-refund of our subs money. Anybody know what othr delights await us?

Even Merlin and his oddly phallic headpiece?

there's a whole thread on the subject of these new trading cards in which I tried to find out what the point of them was, besides getting us hooked on somethinng so we spend more money. I really don't get it myself, but I always stick these freebies up like mini-posters on the ends of bookshelves or anywhere else I can find 3" of space! I got a nice Bolland Anderson, a Frazer Irving Death and some Cliff Robinson Dredds - nice!
I wouldn't count on them to be worth 'owt though!

Am I the only one who doesn't like Defoe? I can't abide strips that depend upon endless variations of "what would steam powered computers or medievel robots look like?" and this one is full of machine guns, steam cars and clockwork cyborgs (sigh).

Jostling for panel space amongst the historical gadget drivel is Mr Mills History Class. I don't doubt the quality of his research on 17th century Europe and thre's some interesting trivia in there, but doesn't it feel a tad heavy-handed these days?

In place of a story we seem to have an endless parade of new characters (or rather 'types', since none are given the chance to develop at all). By now I've ceased caring who is working with who - i'm rooting for the zombies.

Pat Mills seems to be such a hit and miss prospect these days, with sadly more misses than hits. I couldn't get enough of Savage, and the last ABC warriors was stupendous, but Defoe, Blood of Satanus and Black Siddha are all pretty dire IMO. Can no editor say no to him? He just needs a little qulaity control. Greysuit wasn't bad, but didn't knock any socks off. At least we've come a long way since his all-time low-point - Slaine meets Merlin and his Ley-ser guns (it hurts to recall that one!)

Maybe a lot of it's down to the art. ABC warriors looked amazing, but I don't think much of the art on Defoe - some nice touches such as the flaming reeks, but a bit flat and crude in places. I won't restart the liveley debate on the Satanus art, suffice to say my vote was Nay! Then again, the art on Savage was workmanlike if not particularly awe-inspiring, and I really liked that.

I expect to be burnt at the metaphorical stake for my heretical dissent on Defoe, but chacun a son gout as they say.

Sometimes a story can have such an exciting, radical new high-concept setting or plot that it can't then think of anywhere to take it, and the story descends into cliche or boredom as it trundles on towards conclusion. Other stories start very simple and set the scene to be something recognisable and believable but then once we're engaged turn out to be absloute gems as the story develops. I'm hoping Stalag 666 is the latter - in great economic style it's pushed all our prison camp reference buttons and supplied tons of pesky detail and backstory in a few short pages. Now that I'm immersed, I can't wait to see where he goes with it, but it's too soon to tell. If it just continues to layer cliche on cliche, I'll be most disppointed.

Or if Raider turns out to be Halo Jones or something.

Dredd never fails to disppoint. I'm not a huge fan of the art on Red Seas, but it's not a bad strip. Excellent cover

A great issue for our Ruf - he's all over the frikkin' thing! Luckilly that's no bad thing! Loving Tank Girl, just like old times.

The Jock collection is marvelous (though it's too floppy to be a graphic novel surely - why not just call it a 64 page comic?)

Didn't like the idea of a 'son of fink' story at first, felt too much like flogging a dead angel, but he's such an evil little s.o.b. that this story  has won me over. It' nice to see a Justice dept operation go so spectacularly tits up for a change.

Tales of the Black museum - one of the best so far. (Actually, it's been too long since the big meg has had a really good judge-bothering craze. Mr Wagner...?)

Anderson - only glanced at this so far.  not keen.

BRONZE - Buttonman 03 (Dougal) (purely for the gag, even tho this is a art compo)
SILVER - Bolt-01 (Tin Machine)- looks great and is totally credible. I'm surprised Tharg hasn't actually commisioned this one before now.
but in first place with
GOLD - Legendary Shark 02 (Baatacus) for lush graphics and a very high gag-per-inch ratio

HM
- Krombasher 3 (dragon) - nothing to do with the brief but a lovely painting.

That's the chap!

Ah, I loved Starlord! I couldn't comprehend at the time why it had to merge. (Tornado- not so much of a shock!)

I stand corrected! What was the story from Starlord that I was thinking about then? I seem to remember space pirates, but it was soooooo long ago. Can't wait until this site's archives are back up and running.

Damn! Why didn't I remember Angelina in the recent lady tournement poll!

This was one of the rare examples of a strip based on an established series of SF novels (the original was published in 1961), rather than the usual script-droid produced stories.

I agree that while it's hard to put your finger on the reason, they never really impressed. Perhaps it was the need to cram a novel into a short-episode structure that didn't quite work, because there was nothing wrong with the source stories or the artwork. Seem to remember quite enjoying it though, especially when Angelina was around!
