Last I checked, this movie was categorically not happening. Anyone got any firm info to the contrary?

I'm quite possibly the biggest Akira nut around. I think it's an awesome story - without a shadow of a doubt the finest comic book I've ever read.

The 1988 movie however - well, it's a big movie. I think it's very good in the sense that it gives folks who are familiar with the story something different - it's production values are incredibly high, too. But for me, the real story will always be in the manga.

Ultimately, that's why I wouldn't be keen to see a live action movie. When the project was first announced, I was pretty receptive. But I can't swallow Leonardo DiCaprio as a 16 year old kid. I can't accept Manhattan as a substitute for Neo Tokyo. Any reinterpretation of the manga is just gonna HAVE to reference that a lot more faithfully.

I reckon the story belongs in comics, at the end of the day. It's a really well crafted comic - the story has a lot of layers, and there are lots of themes and motifs to be read into. I've always dexcribed it to others as 'Rumble Fish meets Blade Runner - with psychics.'

I just think the finer points that make it so great will be lost in an Americanized remake. There are other Japanese franchise that would be better choices if the American studios want to mine anime for future blockbusters.

Announcements / Re: Judge Dredd Movie is Green Lit!
09 September, 2009, 07:49:08 PM
Having been away from the forum for a while, I hadn't been following this. Saw a few comments elsewhere on the net that seemed to suggest the movie wasn't going ahead after all - so I'm glad to see more chatter!

The world needs a decent Dredd movie. I need a decent Dredd movie.

I also need a 'pow-pow-pow' hot girlfriend who plays bass guitar and has hair as red and flowing as the fiery tale of a comet.

But that part's not really germane. :-\

Wow. I'm away from the forums for a few weeks and I miss so much...

I'd just read the updated forum rules after logging on and commented on them in another thread before seeing ANY of this (that's why there's an odd fitting post from me in the 'welcome' section).

I've got to say, as ugly as all of this seems, I'm really glad of seeing people explaining their positions and decisions so clearly and inarguably. I may be the new guy, but it seems to me there's a fair bit of good sense at work here.

Welcome to the board / Re: Welcome to 2000AD Online

Perhaps this isn't really applicable in this thread, but it seems like the next best place to post.

I've been away from the forums here for a little while and Ion returning, I noticed a set of rules have been posted for forum use. Having read it, I just wanted to say how excellently written, clear, reasonable and helpful they are.

I recently decided to stop using a certain message board owned by a successful American comic book publisher. The problem was that, quite simply, no clear guidance for acceptable use was provided there. The standard of moderation over there also caused me some concerns. Basically, everybody seems to get the same harsh treatment regardless of the severity or nature of the offence. It was even getting to a point recently when unintentional gaffes on the part of numerous users were being punished pretty severely.

The statement of forum rules and expected ettiquette here is really comprehensive. It's informed me of a few problems and issues that I didn't even realise were concerns for website administration and moderators, so many thanks for that.

Hopefully, nobody intends to deliberately sour the atmosphere of the message boards with unsavoury comments. But such clearly written and specific guidelines help us to be on guard against doing anything to spoil the community here.

Just my two cents, as this stuff has been on my mind for a few weeks.

Film & TV / Re: THE BEST SAFETY FILM EVER

I think I've seen this before years ago, under the title of 'Fork Lift Driver Claus'.

I hate gore and violence. But it DID make me laugh, just like a certain similar Monty Python sketch...

Film & TV / Re: Alien 5 finds a director

I think wherever talk of a possible addition to the Alien movies is concerned, folks are always in one of two camps. It's either gonna suck or it ain't.

I kinda think of the movies as being cool in their own right, as individual premises. I've got time for all of 'em. Even the AvP movies were okay, fun little diversionary pieces - although I think some events in AvP 2 were morally deplorable.

I'm still having a hard time accepting the report of Ridley Scott helming this - it's a 'pinch me, I must be dreaming' sorta thing. But I have faith that he'd put up a quality product. For me, scary slimy monstahs are enough. Extra dimensions in the writing and production are a bonus.

Let's see what happens!

I just flat out didn't believe this when I saw the title of the thread... but now I've checked.

Dear lord. I'm so happy right now!

So deliriously happy!

(I loves me some slimy, scary aliens - and I like a good Ridley Scott movie too!)

Hey, I've always thought of Henry Flint as one of THE definitive Dredd artists! I mean, true, he may not have been around for as long as the Old Boys, but this aesthetic really clicks with Dredd. It's been a delight to see everything he's done for 2000AD so far.

Allow me to fix the link there.

You might also want to look into a full-body transplant, being a head in a jar in this day and age is so unnecessary. ;)

Ah, thanks for that - internet blunders agogo there!

Full body transplant, eh? How very Ghost In The Shell!

Ahh, sadly, Mr. Giger has retired now, and in the truest sense of the word.

Nice dream, though! Or nightmare... whichever is most appropriate.

Aw yeah! And Dredd Vs. Aliens has such a great ending too! Playing off that 'think of all we can learn from them' schtick with Dredd simply saying 'y'know - no.' Brilliant!

I always took it that adding a subtitle to the title Dredd Vs. Aliens might mean there was a possibility of more somewhere down the line...

I guess if Dredd was to become Chief Judge, that would jibe with the angle that he faces up to his responsibilities and has such unswerving respect for the law.

Then of course, what's to say Joe Dredd couldn't live to be a hundred plus years old? It wouldn't seem out of place.

Now threads like this are ALWAYS good fun!

I realise it may come as bit of a BUMP, but, why not, eh?

Personally, a guy I'd like to see more from in 2000 AD material would have to be Ian Gibson. I always had a soft spot for his deeply curvy, stylised artwork. I remember reading his litte bit in the Brothers Of the Blood trade and being delighted to see he was represented. His stuff is so uniquely his!

I dunno if this is cool to recommend here, but one of the first Rebellion Dredd trades I bought was Judge Dredd Vs. Aliens: Incubus. I'm usually a confirmed loather of crossovers, but this book was an absolute blast!

It's got Dredd. it's got Aliens. It's got... well, it basically does what it says on the tin. Loved every second of it, and it's one of the most re-read books in my (too large) collection. Plus, I loves me some Henry Flint artwork, and it definitely adds a huge dollop of extra quality having him illustrate the entire thing!
